is it misfiring?
If so, most likely bad coils , plugs, or wires.

What fuel are you using?
I find low octane fuel can cause flat spots.

Is it a possiblity its to do with the seal? being paranoid lol.

misfires at idle?
does the engine sputter? does the car shake a bit when it 'misfires'?
Usually misfires happen under load and at higher rpm's.

Could you describe in detail exactly what the car is doing at idle? is the Check Engine light on or flashing?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to rule things out and help diagnose your car from the other side of the planet.

It's normal for the car to pop and burble when you first start it though.

If it's happening all the time (even after driving around a bit) it's either your spark plugs, wires, or coils.

Do you have any flat-spots about 4-5000rpm?

don't mistake the pop of a normal rotary at idle to a misfire... you'll know if it's a misfire if you lose power in the 5k range like Cromax has said. I love the pop pop pop the 8 makes in the low revs.

If you have a early year model or you have vibration shake in your gear stick, then check the sagging engine mounts.

Geoff,

I'm still running the original plugs and coils at 56k but have spares (ready to change out). my problem was leads.

I put Magnecor leads on and my "rough idle" reduced by 95%. Even the missus commented unprompted! I'd checked the factory ones were well connected so must have just been poor quality.

Good luck

M
