If you buy a new car interstate, how hard is it to get it registered in your home state?? Do you have to register in the state you purchased the car, deregister, roadworthy and re-register in your home state?

Seems the price difference can be significant..

You can always try Private Fleet or one of the other car broking firms. If the car is in stock in your colour and trim somewhere in Australia, they can get it for you at a good price (although it's hard to say if it is the best price). HOWEVER, if the car you want has to be ordered, BEWARE!

My wife ordered a Mini via Private Fleet. As a cult car, nothing much to bargain over except the deliveries (about $1300 saved), and it was on a 3 month delivery because it is back-ordered all over the world. In that time the sales guy at Private Fleet left, as did the sales guy at the NSW BMW dealer from which it was ordered (we live in Brisneyland). When the car was finally delivered in mid-May (5 1/2 months after ordering) it was the wrong colour combination and we refused to let the guy take it off the truck. It was confirmed that the BMW dealer got the original order wrong.

The postcript is we're still battling to get our original $1000 holding deposit back. We'll probably get it back this week.

So the moral is, by all means use a broker, but only if the car is in stock in your colour , and preferably from a dealer in your state. You can get the car delivered unregistered from interstate, but you need to get it delivered into the car park of your nearest road transport authority depot so it doesn't have to be driven on the road. The paperwork is easy to organise; all the necessary forms are available online. The Qld Transport people are really helpful in this regard.

The end to our story is that we ended up at the local BMW dealer. We paid more of course, but my wife is really happy because they treat her well and with respect. When you amortize that price difference over say the next 5 years, that's a small price to pay.

Thanks labrat.

I will be in the market to get a hatchback 6 for my wife and the little Taka.

Nojooc you will certainly receive my call then.

Labrat method works for me. But if I want to see the car first before giving nojooc the bank cheque. Can I registrar it in NSW first and change it to VIC plate later on (within 3 months ... something like that)? or you need to be a NSWalshman to reg a car in NSW???

I just want to keep my option open to get the best deal for the 6.

Not to highjack the thread, since it is about getting an 8, is the 6 having a facelift??

Oh just saw the Private Fleet website.

Got a question. What about car option/accessories???

Sound like you have to work your combination up and give them what you want. Say an brillant black 8 with 6MT & leather... do you have to tell them what accessories you like on the car from the dealer?

I guess say you want a leather pack black 6MT 8 with say the full mazda kit and spoiler, fender stakes and MP3 player. Will they give you just one price or a combination of prices (say $62000 with MP3 only or $63000 for lot)?

That sounds very interesting.

In Vic a dealer can organise a 7 day exemption/special rego that enables you to get the car to the state you intend to register it at. I helped one of Danielles relatives buy a Honda Accord Euro here at $6000.00 cheaper than Perth then he flew over here and drove it back with that special rego the dealer organised. Once back he registered it in Perth. I think the special 7 day rego cost about $190.00.

Taka,

The way it happens is that you specify exactly what you want in the way of colour and options, and they come back to you with a net price (inclusive of delivery charges, but exclusive of rego and CTP if it is an interstate delivery). Obviously, you will have done your homework to know what sort of discount you're getting. You actually pay the dealer (and I guess the dealer and Private Fleet haggle about the commission). They also do trade-ins.

I don't want to endorse Private Fleet specifically, so I will say there are other broking firms around. Even though the sale didn't come off in my instance, it wasn't their fault. I believe they might be the biggest. If you are looking for a Mazda 6, then you shouldn't have much trouble in getting one ex stock.
