Does anybody know how to bring back the extra 7kw and 5Nm?

My reply from mazda:

Dear Mr Costa

This only involves US spec cars.

Mazda in the US is offering this package as compensation for any confusion over their horsepower figures.

Australian RX-8s are NOT affected. They remain at 177KW for manual models and 141kW for automatics.

Ok, practical solution to the lost 7kW.

Jap spec RX-8 gets the 184kW engine. Its all in the ECU. The fuel/ignition map is simply more aggressive.

You need to get the part number for the Jap spec ECU. Then buy it from Mazda. plug it in & away you go.

Word of caution though, the cost will be pretty crazy as Mazda should try to offend you with a price around $3000, perhaps more. A cheaper option is going to find a source in Japan that can get access to wrecked RX-8's. Pull the ECU out & you should be able to pick it up for around AUS$1000.
Cheapskate's version:

*RX-8 ECU is flash programmable - so there's a >90% chance that the ROM is JTAG (IEEE standard) compatable.
*JTAG programmers are cheap and can be had for <$15 in some cases. Hell, I've got several of them here at work.
* Find someone to read in their JDM maps (you'll need to run 98 octane to use these). This would be the hard part.
* Read out your old maps. Save it on computer for safety's sake.
* Burn in JDM maps

If you change your mind, (like you want to go somewhere that doesnt have 98 octane) you can always re-flash the ECU.

That's how I'd do it. Just takes some kindness and a bit of know-how.

DMRH, if you don't mind telling me how much did you spend to bring 00 FD3S to Australia? I was thinking of importing Spirit R to Australia, how do you do it? Do you need dealer to do it for you, or you can do it yourself?

I just saw one black series 7 or 8 driving along Paramatta rd, it looks very very good.

Thanks
Am selling my S-8 if you are interested. I really do prefer the JC Cosmo so the RX-7 is going.

Was driving the S-8 along Parra rd last week & again this week. Its black like the one you spotted.

Note many black S-8's around Sydney though...!!!
