Cracked Engine Mount (Pics)

Hi all. Well I've fallen prey to the dreaded cracked RH engine mount. My '8' is a late 03 model and falls within the VIN range that experiences the problem, but up until late Dec last year the mounts were still ok. (I had them checked at my last service just before going out of warranty).

Anyway I recently had a minor accident where I rear-ended someone and immediately afterwards noticed the familiar symptoms of vibrations at idle, shuddering at the clutch friction point (particularly if the revs drop low) and could even hear a soft/dull thumping when driving over bumps etc.

I pulled the right wheel off last night and took a couple of pics so that you guys could see what a cracked mount looks like should any of you be experiencing the problem and unsure what a damaged mount looks like.

Luckily the insurance company is going to pay to have them repaired along with the front bumper. Lucky as I've just gone out of warranty!

Cheers, NT, I mean SARotor head. (I've moved again!)

hmmmm... on the photo. Thx MM.

I was thinking that but this sounds like a manufacturing defect rather than from the trauma... (**** I do sound like a doctor).

I'm still battling to identify that as a crack, even with the arrows.

NT, wanna confirm for us?

BTW, MM do you have your avatar as a jpeg?

rotorman, I don't think there is a range ... since it has not been a TSB or recall. Someone please proof me wrong!

To my understanding 2005 model are updated. Gomez was talking about an unshield mount of old.... Rotor Head's seems insulated.....?

I experience similar problem! like vibrating at idle, shuddering at the clutch friction point (particularly if the revs drop low.

I've also went to Mazda to look at it..

They said engine mounts are brand new..

hm...what could it be then?? They couldn't find it...so they called local technician to have a look at it..

Local technician is coming in on coming monday and i'm gonna leave car at mazda for a day.

what could it possibly be??

My car was built in July 2005 and it has suffered cracked engine mounts. replaced under warranty and car is smooth and sweet at idle. I think it is a design fault in our cars, and people will probably have problems all the time with them.

Yep MM is spot on with the area of the crack. Normally there would be a smooth curve from the top mount point to where it levels out and becomes horizontal.

I'll post a pic of the left hand side shortly which isn't cracked for comparison.

Drewman, I'm with AAMI and all I had to pay was my $300 excess.

Interestingly I had a call from Allianz today who administer the compulsory 3rd party personal insurance fund for SA and it turns out the other party in the accident has made a claim for medical expenses. The government will pay for that out of the CTP insurance fund, but I have to pay another $300 excess, ontop of what I pay each year with my rego!!!!!! :-O

OK I'm heading out to take a photo.

Rotor_man, have a look at the TSB MM mentioned above, the VIN range is contained in the bulletin. http://www.finishlineperformance.com...21-06-1559.pdf
