Centre console clip

hey this is my first post since getting the car 3 months ago. as you might have guessed mine broke about a month after purchase, and im goin into the dealer on friday to get it fixed. im in perth so it took em 3 weeks to order the part from over east, apparently they are replacing the whole sliding unit even though only the clip was broken ahhaha

ive read the old thread on this problem already, just wanted to know how us aussies have fared with replacement consoles (does it keep breaking?)

Welcome brabo

You mean the centre console where the cup holder is?

The centre clip is broken.. is that the one next to the base of the handbrake.

Mine broke when I lean on it . But I did not notice it again until Gomez did my short shifter, so I guess I can live with it.

How much is the replacement may I ask?

yep thats the one, the clip that opens up the cupholder compartment. the slider is a bit dodgy too as other people have noted. i just showed it to the guys at the dealership when i went for my 1000km service and they said they'll replace the whole slider and that its covered under warranty

Hi Brabo,

Mine's still OK, after more than 18months, but I must admit I try to be extra careful with that whole unit after reading an American owner posting that his had broken.

His problem was caused by supporting part of his weight on it with his hand as he got in or out of the car, and I realised that I was doing the same thing. :o

I seem to have been able to retrain myself not to put any weight on it, as it does seem a fairly lightweight affair.

Glad to hear that the dealer is going to replace it all under warranty. Which of the Perth dealers is it?

Mine broke after about a month. A very small hoby drill, some small but stiff metal wire and some super glue... All fixed and know very strong.

Just drill a couple small holes along both the surfaces (directly across from each other of course) then stick little lenghts of the wire in the holes on the broken peace. Apply some good adhesive glue and then stick back together with the ends of the wire going into the holes you drilled on the lid piece. Once dry it's better than new, and with the metal wire acting as pins much stronger. :D

I find I don't lean on it much so I've not had a problem but it is a bit cheap and nasty. I hate the way it slides shut again on its own under braking when you want to leave it open for some reason.

And let's not get into how useless the 'cupholders' are. Would have been better to just leave the indents out and make it a storage bin.

And then there's the heat transfer...

Yes but do you then use a straw to suck up all the liquid that gets sloshed out because the 'cupholder' does not hold the cup tightly enough??

Or is it:

1. My cornering style! :D

2. The size of your coffee cup!! :p :D

I reckon a dash mounted pop out cup holder a la WRX would have been better. Then the centre console could have had dedicated CD slots installed. I've resorted to putting my CDs into a little case that just fits the door bin.

I never went to Parkland (although they seemed pretty helpful on the phone) as they only had 1 in stock when I was looking, and not the colour I was after. Good to hear they are a reasonable bunch.

I do sometimes use Roe hwy - to visit friends in Leeming. But there's another yellow that lives only a couple of ks from me in the hills, and another that live in Leeming but comes up to the hills to visit.

But I virtually never see any other RX8s on the road here, just parked occasionally. What colour's yours?
