Calling Hymee and/or SCO - comments on recall ECU change

Forgive me for breaking out of the sticky, but I'd like someone to speculate on the possible effects of the intended re-programming of the ECU to minimize exhaust heat build- up. Specifically, what are the possible effects on (a) performance or (b) fuel consumption as a result of this change? What parameters will this change affect?

To the best of everyone's knowledge, there are no parameter changes other than the restrictions on engine speed while stationary or the change in the throttle failsafe mode. Neither of these will affect fuel consumption or performance under normal driving conditions.

Info is only available for the PCM reprogram on North American cars at this time. As Australian RX-8's get different software to American ones, it's all just conjecture at this time anyway. Odds are though, we'll cop the same changes.....whether anything else is changed for the new flash is yet to be seen.

Iwas told that my last re-flash was to rectify the heat build up in the exhaust , but i cannot see any difference in performance or fuel consumption so far :D

Makes sense that they will only control revs at idle judging by everything I've read on this particular recall.

I'm gonna check with my SM anyway just to make sure.

No, not the revs at idle......controls the revs while stationary, there is a big difference. After this flash, if you floor the accelerator while stationary, the engine will drop to idle after 10 seconds (regardless of accelerator position). Do 3000-8500rpm and it'll drop to idle after 2 minutes. Do 1300-3000rpm and it'll drop to idle after 5 minutes.

So how does this affect us in day-o-day driving?

your supposed to do 2500rpm for 5min then to 3k rpm and repeat to burp the cooling system.

if this did cause a problem mine would be F*!#ed :D

suppose I'll find out next week.

There are other ways to bleed the cooling system.....

COOLING SYSTEM AIR BLEEDING
Applicable Models
Model Starting S/N Ending S/N
2004 RX8 00000000 ZZZZZZZZ

After performing repairs or any time cooling system coolant is drained, the cooling system must be purged of air. Use the following procedure below to remove air from cooling system: 1. Safely elevate front of vehicle on hoist. Elevating the front end only, at a steep angle will allow air trapped in system to escape easily. 2. Temporarily remove a coolant hose to the throttle body. 3. Fill coolant system with proper mix ratio of coolant / water per work shop manual. 4. Start engine N carefully monitor coolant level, topping off as necessary. 5. When coolant begins to flow from throttle body hose, air is bled from system. 6. Carefully attach coolant hose back to throttle body pipe. **Caution, coolant may be extremly hot! 7. Verify proper coolant level N add as necessary. 8. Check system for leaks. 9. Verify repair.

And Taka reports that his calibration ID did not change during the service, so it would appear it didn't get the reflash.

Cheers,
Hymee.

I don't think the RPM method works anyway. I might give this other one a go this weekend.

Gomez,

Do you think I can get my service department to bleed my cooling system at my next service? Is this a procedure they know about? If I know my service department, I would guess.... not.

They did I have no damage to the fuel tank.

I have to see YellowOzRX8's car after recall and repair and see if his car has the new flash.

Is that no damage = no reflash? It does not make sense though

Gomez,

I went to Garry & Warren Smith at Mulgrave - the closest dealer from the MA office.

Hi guys. I was flashed yesterday as part of the recall and replacing my plugs after the great flood of '05.

First impressions are positive. Very smooth and appears more responsive/torquey at low revs. Could of course be the new plugs. I mentioned the starter motor/ battery (nicely) but they didn't seem very interested.

No work done on any of the recalls. Good customer service though from City Mazda Melbourne. By the way if you insist (even more nicely) City will supply a Mazda 2 courtesy car FOC. Usual charge $33 or so they say.

Cheers

PS. I managed to scratch the side fake aluminium panel running along the right side of the centre console side when installing the short shift some time ago. Any ideas on a suitable touch up paint or will I need to change the panel?

Your car needs one, unless it had one a few weeks ago. Talk to someone there who knows what they're talking about. I had my recall done there last week.....and it got re-flashed.

Over time I've noticed the ECU swing less etc. It doesn't idle rough at all even with the intake.

And fuel economy is simply awesome, don't know about you's but compared to the old flash,
this thing works a treat. Don't have to be scared to give it the bootful no more.

Will find out about my recall tonight. Werribee Mazda has given me a Mazda 3 for the day. I was hoping they'd have a new MX-5 I could borrow but I didn't see one or the friendly sales guy to ask. Probably a good thing too as I'd want to buy one I'm sure.
