anyone worked in Tokyo?

I have unexpectedly been told I need to go to Tokyo next week to do some technical work for 10 days or so.

Has anyone worked there before? Can I get away with not wearing a tie when dealing with Japanese corporates?

If u are working in japan, then i think you should wear a tie they are very very formal people and they will be expecially polite to foreigners, so use polite words.

hope this helps.

I don't even own a suit or tie. Guess I might have to buy/borrow one. I'm going to be working with Toyota and IBM Japan, so I probably better look the part ...

Have been there a few times on business trips. As Zephyr said, very polite and formal people. Be deferential, especially to those older than you, study carefully their business cards and the person who gave it to you -- don't just shove it into a pocket; likewise, hand your to them formally, and keep your cards in a good looking wallet. They have a strange sense of humour, which I have never caught on to.

Oh, and if they really like you, they'll take you to a karaoke or hostess bar and you'll all get sh!tfaced. Never mention it the next day

I heard they are very crazy in those strip bars.... they sometimes get actions in the rooms.

I also heard there is a company hired 400 prostitutes for their worker in a "special" conference trip to China. Group bang in a "conference room". Made a big headline in China and Japan. And I think Japan government have apologised for their citizens' behaviour. Idiots :D
