Hi Guys, unfortunately my wife and I were on the receiving end of an act of complete and utter stupidity!!! :evil: :evil: :evil:

At 9:45pm last whilst driving along Appleby Road, Stafford Heights (Brisbane) just before the Wilgarning Street round-about, a projectile entered our moving vehicle through the rear passenger door glass and landed in our 3 year old son's child seat. Luckily he was not with us or he would have been severely injured or even killed. :evil: :shock: :cry: It honestly sounded like a massive backfire. Thankfully, the window was tinted and held the shattered toughened glass together, otherwise we would have been showered with a whole panel of glass fragments. The projectile was actually a lump of concrete that also shattered on impact with a smaller section (landed in the kids seat) making into the vehicle (various points of contact on the glass). The rest hit the road and was crushed by the traffic. It wasn't dropped from a height (ie. such as bridge), it was intentionally thrown horizontally at the car. I'm so very lucky that it didn't hit my pregnant wife's window.

Here is the damage...










I stopped the car in a bus stop about 100m up the road from the where the incident occurred and called 000. The police arrived about 20 mins later (not a problem), and as you'd expect, the person's that threw the concrete to be long gone from the scene of the crime. NOPE, they were even more stupid than I thought....as I took the police officer back up the hill to show him the exact location of where the offence was committed I noticed the silhouettes of two people right opposite. As we got to within 50m they saw that one of us was in uniform and bolted down an alley way. From their reaction we knew it was them and proceeded after them...after chasing them near on 400m we lost them in the darkness, however the officer had called for back-up, with 3 vehicles combing the streets within minutes. The dog squad also arrived to track them down. Unfortunately they we unsuccessfull, but us chasing them caused them to drop their mobile phone!!! :D

So hopefully the phone is not stolen and they can be tracked down sooner than later. We will wind up with finger prints at least, but it is likely that they won't be on the register as they appeared to be juveniles.

Sorry to hear what happened but I am glad to hear that your child was not in the vehicle and that the projectile did not enter through your wife's window.

Some people are such a waste of space.

The "Scenes of Crime" section of Queensland Police visited this morning to take better photos of the damage for the case file. I asked about progress, but the officer in attendance had not heard any more. :?

It has then taken the rest of the day to remove the remaining glass from the door and then strip out a fair bit of the interior to remove all the broken glass and concrete fragments. We even found a golf ball size chunk in the back right hand corner of the rear parcel shelf :shock: . I successfully repaired the rear quarter glass frame as it took a bit of the impact. So all I need to get the car lockable again is a new glass...will try to pick a second hand one up on Monday. Might even price a new one out of curiosity.

Yes, the world (well Brisbane at least) is certainly not as we fondly remember it . As has been stated, the mindless idiots in this world are on the increase, and we don't have an effective system to suitably deal with them :x

Totally agree with you Danny but the system to deal with these idiots to some extent lies in the hands of the public , who mostly choose to do nothing more than report it to the authorities and rely on them to wright their wrongs .

Wow! I can only add to the chorus of sympathisers. The main thing is nobody got hurt but that was just dumb luck.

I also hope they catch the little *********, though the local beak will probably just slap them on the wrist and tut tut about why society is breeding such creatures.

There's still a lot of good people in the world though Danny, even in evil Sydney. Drove off from the beach this morning with the mobile on the roof (who hasn't done this with something at some point?) and 'er indoors had a call before I even got home. Collected it 15 mins later.

 

Someone in Auckland was killed recently by a lump of concrete being dropped from an overbrdge . Caught the bastard and charged him with murder .

Count yourself lucky .

 

Why would people do such a thing? Do they think it's funny? This is really sad.

Danny I'm also sorry to hear about your misfortune, its a miracle there wasn't any serious injury. Unfortunately this time of the year is at its worst anywhere in Australia and it sounds like these miscreants are juveniles.

I hope something comes out it in terms of a positive prosecution, however with some of the decisions handed out in the courts lately the penalty just isn't fitting the crime. At any rate if theres anything I can do to help from my end just send me a PM....

I am not sure what punishment is enough for those acts!

 

What bloody dangerous stupidity I suspect, as Trevor implies, it's kids on holidays bored. I blame the parents!

 

Too right Timbo....I blame 75 - 80% of juvenile delinquent behaviour to a lack of parental control. The other 20 - 25% don't want to take responsibility for their childs actions.

The statistics show the vast majority are repeat offenders, and unless they are sorted out quickly, they'll do more serious crimes as they get older...maybe one day they'll bring back the size 10 boot...

 

Have you seen the latest - a kid's watch that is also a GPS tracker! You get an alert if they stray outside a given 'play area' and if they take it off you get another alert.

Overkill? I'd like to think that effective parenting early on doesn't need such equipment but then again mine are still little enough to be controllable...kinda.

In civialised South East Asian cities, after the big riot in 70s, any gathering over 100 people (that may include our upcoming Nationals... ) in a public area require registration with the police aka permits! Well Nats aren't in public area and so do Werribee parties but hey I really want the government to stand up and punish heavily on junvenile violence and stop this nonsense behaviour. There must be a solution and can be Singaporian style!

Yes but we're starting to get into cultural differences here, which can be comparing apples with oranges. A lot of Aussies wouldn't accept the kind of laws extant in Singapore and other tougher regimes.

Hi Taka, irrespective of the outcome it was cheaper and quicker for me to do the repair myself than lodge an insurance claim. However, if the offenders are caught I will be claiming monies for my time, not just the cost of the parts.

You make a claim, you pay the excess. Some insurers will refund it if they recover the whole loss from the offender.

Fair enough Danny but good luck enforcing a judgment against the kind of little scumbag that does this kind of thing. You'll probably find they're minors anyway...
