Update: Today I removed the baffles from inside the airbox ... the car seems to be idling a lot easier now, less vibration, but it's still there. The engine's lashing around a bit inside the engine bay as well. Only 5000km to go until the next service ... should I wait? or should I get it done now?

To be perfectly honest, I cbf'd taking the car to preston at the moment, I already have to get my tyres swapped left to right and have the alignment redone.

I know, but I don't really have the time at the moment. I'll just wait until after exams, and then I'll have done about 5000kms anyway, so I might as well just wait until the service.

Hopefully they have a new car out by then so I can get that as a hire car

I hope you mean swap front to rear. L2R will meke the tires run opposite their design direction, unless you plan to dismount the tires and flip them.

No, I don't mean front to rear. I need the tyres get taken off the rims and swapped left to right.

Bridgestone recommended doing it to reduce wear and a vibration I can hear (probably because I have good hearing) caused by feathering of the tyres ... which is from the rear suspension geometry of the car.

Please explain what you mean by "feathering of the tyres" caused by the rear geometry.

As far as I know, the rear end geometry is fully adjustable within limits. So therefore, with the correct alignment(s) to the rear suspension, the tyre feathering should be eliminated. I've done 4 track events and my tyre wear is simply superb! BTW, do you have any data corresponding to your rear end suspension geometry?.

astro, if you do track work you know what feathering means!

But the reason for it was to do with the way that the car is set up stock and the OEM specifications. Reading through the data, the toe out at the back was too much from factory (2.6mm right and 2.4mm left as set by Mazda). However, with the rear fixed (1.5mm right and 1.4mm left) the car still makes the same noise after driving on the tyres. Fronts according to this data look fine.

Bridgestone have recommended me to have the tyres swapped this 10,000km ... which is when they'll diagnose what's happening with the tyres and tell me if it's the car.

cromax, I've setup my geometry for stability. Under acceleration, my rear end is neutral and only when I unload the car due to heavy braking my rear end will give me the "toe in " required for stability. As I have mentioned in my previous post... you can adjust the rear end geometry to lessen the tyre wear issues. The rear end alignment seems to be the cause of your problems. Camber and tyre pressure will also affect your tyre wear... lots of variables to consider. It all comes down to your driving style. From your rear end "toe in" it should not show much wear on your rear tyres.

Feathering is the wearing due to excess heat of the tyre. Now think of it - I wear out on the shoulder too much on the track. I need more -ve camber.

Toe in or out it is for stability of the car. Toeing out is funny since it is pushing the car outward. May be it is your style but toeing out rear is certainly unique I would say

if you are having a hot lap with taka (as in he drives and you sit on the passenger seat in the same car...) and bring a pair of brown undies....... so it wont be as noticeable to your mum when she wash it.....

Oh, the RE040's are directional ... but they remove them from the rim and flip them around I'm not sure ... I'll take it to Donellans and get them to give me a better setup. They've always done my MX6, maybe they can set this thing up properly as well.

Cromax, I have to say, I do track work and had no idea what feathering was. Personally I know what you are talking about as shoulder wear.

Also, I dont know that cars come from the factory/dealer with a specific alignment setting. I am going to change tyres and reset my alignment today so I will post up my sheet if you want. But its a street setup.

Here you go, what they called "Factory Settings". Please ignore the toe setting on the left rear as they messed up and I have to go back today to fix it (it should be identical to the right rear).
