*whinge* needs more powah, Cap'n!

OK so my minor rant for today which made me a little unhappy. here's the scenario; I'm driving home today just after lunch in a pretty good mood as I'm going to pick up my employment contract to sign for my new job. The sun is shining, etc, I'm in my blue beast and all is good. Then...

Out of a sidestreet I need to turn right onto a dual carriageway both sides, median strip in the middle. No worries, do it all the time at this particular intersection. Get across the first two lanes no dramas and stop in the gap and curse under my breath ath the fairly poor rear visibility the 8 has (as I'm now almost parallel to the oncoming traffic). This wasn't helped by the fact that the bloke behind me decides to cross at the same time in his black gx lancer (current model, whatever that is) and further obscure my view. Anyways, after a short time I can see it's all clear and I take off, moderately quickly. A split second later the lancer decides there's enough room for him too and follows me.

So it's at this stage I'm shifting from 2 -> 3 and this guy is a little close for my liking, so I put the boot into it and try to put some distance between us. Well, much to my disgust, he's still no further behind! Now, I didn't redline the car but I did certainly get it in the power band but really didn't get anywhere. From my view of the lancer it looked completely stock, so I think I can rule that out.

i know this is anecdotal etc but jeez, can't pull away from a lancer?! What sort of sports car is this?

Try goin through some twisties and see if he keeps up!!!

We all know it's not the torquiest engine in the world...or the most powerful...

but i know what i'd rather be drivin'!!!

Enjoy it for what it is ! A one of a kind!

...I wonder how envious the lancer driver was of your car!

Be in the right gear. Even at 7000rpm - it still super smooth... and just think that your are clearing the carbon build up in your motor. I sometimes forget to upchange when i go mentally blank... then see the needle hit > 9500 rpm and cuts out. DOH!!!! My motor is still running like clockwork... touch wood... hehehe!

BTW, what was your rev or speed when upshifting to 3rd gear?

A Lancer? If it's just a standard Lancer (not an EVO), then you should have no problem pulling away. You DO need to push it to redline to really get the most out of the engine. Go ahead, it won't hurt it. And you do need to be in the lowest possible gear as well. third won't do much for you unless you're already going 50-60 mph (not sure what that translates to in kp/h...).

When you get to 10k the fuel runs out and she takes a big nose dive... Sigh!

its the kind of sports car that you DOWNSHIFT! and hint hint there are lots of non "sports cars" on the road today that are faster than many sports cars. being a sports car doesnt mean you have more power than everythign else on the road.

oh and adjust your mirrors

People complain the 8 and the S2000 lack of torque down below but I actually find it more fun and challenging to extract power by keeping it in the power band when I feel the need for speed. If you don't enjoy this or don't know how to enjoy it then you got the wrong car.

get it up to 9,000 around a turn and see if that Lancer is even close to you...

Redline is your friend

10000rpm... on second I have seen 121 km/h. Yes it did nose dive... but I swear approaching 9500 rpm... it was still pulling hard. I always think about changing gear when that beeper goes beeeeeeeeeepppp, however... it just spins towards that fuel cut off revs. I've done it 4 times since I've had my car... last time I did 10000 revs was last Sunday... hehehe!

On topic: As I have mentioned... right gear (in the powerband) - this car will move!

if u watch the videos on google, u'll see that the pro racers shift the 8 half way into the red line almost consistently.

yeah the other day i went to overtake a cardigan driver doing 65kph, dropped from 6th into third, nothing, then into second, ok a bit of something called acceleration, then hang on just as i was moovin, nothing again. Well rev limiter cuts in, duh!. 7000-9500 is the only area where there is anything remotely called power. No problems, it shouldn't be any surprise to anyone familiar with the car.
Although the look of bemusement from many people driving very very modest machinery, is priceless as they watch your car screaming its nuts off to pass you, at only a slightly higher speed. I guess it is something to do with a missing 3rd rotor/turbo that mazda forgot to give us.

I think peak power is around 8500 RPM. So readlining the car or hitting 10 000 is only slowing you down.

I think the best way to extract power is to down shift to a low gear and be prepared to upshift very quickly as the revs climb to peak power within seconds.

I dont mind shifting down to third momentarially at 100kmph then blasting my way past my victim.

Actually, the problem is the stock PCM knew you were on the street, thereby limiting your road behaviour in public

ummm... if you're really tryin to punch it... 3rd should only be used at 90+km/hr
1st will pull u nicely to about 55.. then second will pull u to about 98ish...
I find if I'm at 7000+ rpm I can usually get the jump on just about anything.

I think the rx8 is pretty quick, I mean its not a monster, but its still pretty fast. What was he expecting pulling from a stop sign then trying to nail it in 3rd, the car is no where near in its powerband so its not gonna pull of fast especially not in 3rd, not unless he was already doing about 70.

My modded Hyundai Coupe could beat standard Lancers across an intersection.

My RX8 convincingly beats the Hyundai, everywhere. Don't fear the beep, but instead use it to know when to change gears if you're in a hurry

The Lancer was also probably at it's limit also, wouldn't be surprised if he was redlining it just to keep up with you...

Lancer driver thinking to himself "ohhh look a sports car, lets see if I can out gun him... oh damn he's quick....."

Hmmm ... rx8 , 0-100 kph in the low 6 second range.

Lancer ... 0-100 kph in the high 9s.

Someone wasn't driving the rx8 properly.
