After Market Radio ?

News.. I am working on a replacement unit that will allow you to add that After market radio in Din format. There's only enough room for a single Din unit. This will mean you remove the stock HU and plug your Aftermarket unit into the oem harness and go .. This will be a replacement for the face unit with the AC/temp controlls.

How many people are interested in after market Radio replacement for the OEM unit.

Very cool. My preference would be for piano black, just like the trim on the factory head unit.

From: AL/GA...you pick
can you expound a little on how you're doing this..i've worked with a few people here on everything involved in this "swap" and this is a VERY delicate mod...

I have a mold ready for CF..i tried with wet lay and it sux...i have someone that has facilities and access to pre-preg CF and vac molds, autoclaves ...etc....I just need the time to get together with him...he's in ATL i'm in Auburn, AL...so..but the whole radio swap is a killer...if you move that PCB the wrong way or disconnect it...your AC and LED panel are toast...PM if you have any questions...i just hope you've researched a little before jumping into this...i've spent months going over this..

Yes. its not as hard as you think.
The mold is a mold.. and i am working on a deal now to get the Face plate made.

As for the HU.. What can i say. I am not sure we are both on the same page but I cannot really give away my secrets.

The A/C will operate, it wont display.
the little guy with arrows pointing at him, ambiant temp "amb" button on face of radio.
The beep sound when you push a A/C button.
The clock set on front of radio, they all go thru the HU.
They are all things that need working out, unless people are going to live without it.

Aftermarket HU

I notice the date on this thread is a little old....did anyone ever come up with a solution for replacing the factory unit in an RX8 with an aftermarket HU? I guess some of the issues that would need to be addressed are:

-Faceplace replacement
-Mounting hardware
-Wiring interface

Iits just not that easy .. the OEM HU controlls the Temp /AC and theText readout of the Text screen. Inorder to do this We have to 1 make a replacement Mod to mimic the HU controlls.. or relocate the HU and then Wire around it.

I have a Face Plate in production now. It allows 1 din hole in the very center.. this is all the room thats in there. when that is done I will begin to sell those but you will still have to relocate/bypass your OEM HU. But dont give up hope.. there is a few things in the works..

thew....I've already commented on the Temp controls many times in regards to putting in aftermarket HUs and specifically pertaining to my system. My suggestion to you:
Take the 2 main PCB boards that are required for the Red display and Temp controls (The two main PCB's form an "L" when all the other radio garbage is removed from them) Either create connectors that connect between each board and have a bit of wire between, or hard solder wire between the connectors of the two boards...the purpose of this would be to allow the two boards to remain connected (cause they need to be) but yet allow them to lay flat on top of one another, rather than being connected in an "L" fashion.

My suggestion is create the connectors, thus, you can ship them with the HU panel, and instructions for how to dismantal and relocate the radio. The other choice is to have people ship you their old radio in return, and you ship them out an already modified radio.

If you want any further ideas or input, just drop me a line.

The HU I would like to mount is only 1 DIN. Are you saying that by going with only 1 DIN height that you won't have to mess with the A/C controls? What do you mean by 'relocate' the factory HU?

I'd say to take a look at what Metra has done with their panel replacement for the Mazda6. Apparantly they figured out a way to make it work.

A JDM company has produced a kit (finally). Saw in the Sept. 2005 issue of RX-7 magazine (JDM). Sorry... I missed the name as i was all caught up on a couple other things I found... Anyway the kit all not only the a/c to wor, but the display as well and option for the steering wheel controls. The cost was about 86,000 yen I believe.
