tranny issues ver 2.0

as some of you may remember, back in oct of last year, i had issues with the tranny in my 8, where i ended getting locked into 6th gear. dealership took care of the problem under warranty.

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/those-transmission-problems-75745/

since i got it fixed, i have had some issues with grinding (1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts at high rpm shifts) and finally got dealer to be able to replicate issue. (it wasnt a super big issue with me as my dealer takes really good care of me, and i dont do that much driving in the 8).

anyway, took it in on thursday and dropped it off, my dealer had already ordered new synchros, shift forks, etc for doing the repair (it was something like 16 or 17 different parts).

well, they got it apart, and its going to tuesday before they are done, as they had to order more parts. they found some of the teeth on 2nd gear were missing (i have filed a claim with the local lost and found, but nothing yet ), there were ball bearings where they shouldnt be, springs that were sprung.

i havent gotten a chance to survey the damage, but i will get pics of the damaged parts as soon as possible

Another 2nd Gear goes down. You can read about it here:

And also, rgonza had this to say:

Did they tell you what might have caused the fault?

well, got the 8 back from the dealer today, and i must say tranny feels much better...of course, i havent had it since last thursday. i have included scans of the exploded views of the transmission, with the highlighted part numbers being the parts replaced, as well as a list of all the parts removed from the tranny, and a pic of all the parts laid out, and a close up of the drain plug with 3 bearings stuck to it (there were actually 6 missing, who knows where they went) and the metal sludge that has built of on the plug.

unfortunately, i do not have pics of the actual faulty parts, though there was some wear on 2nd gear, not broken teeth like i had originally posted. also, there were some springs and bearing missing from one of the synchro assemblies.

2nd gear in this trans sucks , I blew another one up several weeks ago

It doesn't help that I'm in the middle of a transition; car is in NV, spare trans is in TX. I just shipped it out today. I lucked into a 2nd spare one for a great price about two months ago. I'm going to try and start repairing them myself. I'll post some pics once I get this one apart. It seems worse than the first one linked above, but at least it still worked well enough to get it up on the trailer ... it dug in and went for a short distance after the 1-2 shift then just zinged like it popped out of gear except there is no 2nd gear any more, so I suspect it spun all the teeth off the countershaft again ...

thanks for the thread Lurch, I might need this when I go to the dealership soon. Mine is starting to grind as I upshift into 2nd at high RPM's. Heck, even when I try and downshift at above 5k, it'll grind going in.

did yours start off with similar issues?
