Strange Noise around 6k

I own a 2004 RX8 A/T with 89k and third motor. Not all the time but sometimes around 6k rpms i get a strange noise, almost like a whinning noise. I have no idea what it could be. I have the BHR Ignition Kit, so i know its not the coils. Also i replaced the fuel pump not to long ago. I notice there is power loss too around 6k when it happens. Then the next day i redline it, it goes past 6k no problems. Any Ideas?

It sounds like it is coming from the motor.

Could it be the water pump? There is no leaks, does not overheat, and does not happen at lower rpms. I noticed there is a red/brown rust color dust coating some parts on the motor near the water pump pulley. At high rpms could the water pump pulley be freezing up causing the noise?

Just not sure...............need someone with more experience to chime in. You say it's not the MAIC sound, so I don't think it's cavatation, but what the hell do I know. It could be the pump itself, not sure how you would test that. I'm still thinking and searching though.
Possible vacuum leak somewhere? Think I'd start by checking all the hoses around the intake for leaks and what not.

i will try and get a sound clip. Its hard to tell exactly where it is coming from, but i am going to have level ten check out my tranny since its under warranty. There is no CEL's and it only happens under load not reving the engine in park.

The strange noise around 6k rpms was confirmed by the owner of level ten as the oil pump in the transmission, since it was building a lot of pressure. The fix is to have the transmission flushed and refilled and the noise will be gone.

Ok just had my tranny fluid changed at Level Ten and the both times i have brought the car to redline the noise is gone. Thanks Charles R. Hill for thinking it was the tranny making the noise instead of the engine.
