Shimmy steering wheel

Hi,

Did you find out what was wrong with the shimmy steering wheeel?

I went to the Mazda dealer for the 1st time in about 6 years to have them check for any TSBs and any CPU firmware updates.

I showed them the RX8club.com thread about cleaning the contacts and moving the discharge hose. They said that I should replace the steering wiring harness as Mazda issued a new design.

I got the call later in the day that the new harness did not fix the issue and that I needed a new rack and motor (over $2K). The desk clerk made it sound like the car was no longer driveable. I asked if they saw any error codes as I did not once see an idiot light come on, ever. I got the service amanger involved as I was not inclined to spend the money and I was suspicious. Once the manager clarified that the car was no worse off, no error codes and it drove the same way as it did when I brought it in for service. I asked them to put back the orignal wiring.

Bottom line is that I got the new harness for no charge and the car is fine, still seems to shimmy however when I first start it.

Not sure what to look for next and I mayjust live with it, as is.

Any suggestions?

Claude H.

If it goes away after you drive for a bit, it's simply cold rubber hardening overnight leaving flat spots on your tires.

Some additional information:
When slowly backing out of a parking spot, I have to firmly grip my steering wheel because it is over and under compensating for my inputs depending on which direction I turn the wheel. When it goes into this shaking, I just stop turning the wheel and it settles down.
Once I am moving forward, the sudden shaking is mostly gone and I mainly notice the imbalance in force on the left vs right turns.
To me it feels like I am fighting the electric power steering and I question the health of the steering input torque sensor.

I also filed a complaint at: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

No man you don't understand, this isn't vibrates... We are talking about full on shake you hands off the wheel if your not expecting it while going .5 mph. Keep in mind in this video the car is stationary.

Holy **** lol damn that is cray cray

Just saw the thread revival ...
I don't get anything like that video not even close.

More like a soft wheel balance shimmy. Like Big C said I suspect my shimmy is caused from a cold tire flat spot.

Wow just wow that video is totally freaky

Mine was doing that when coolant was dripping into the power steering connector. Coolant may also have been hitting the radiator fan and splashing onto other electrical components. I fixed the coolant issue and it still did it for a little while, but it eventually got better and then went away completely as all the pooled up coolant evaporated.

Did anyone actually replace their steering rack and it fixed the issue? I've pretty much swapped out the rest of my EPS wiring, harness, and ECU and no change in mine at all, so I'm very suspicious of the rack itself...appreciate any help!

I did not get the problem fully resolved before we sold the car. The dealership was indicating that if cleaning the connectors didnt fix it, the rack would need to be replaced.

It most probably is the connector on the steering rack. Mine did this also and it would get so bad sometimes that the power steering would go out completely. I actually got rid of all the harness connectors and soldered everything together. After a lot of cleaning of the big harness adapter did I finally fix it. The reason it does it only when cold is that due to temperature the metal pins contract, if they are dirty the connection will not be 100% when cold.

Actually mine has been working (dare I say) normally for the last several months. It's hot as hell here in Florida, which seems to help, combined with me shooting as much grease/WD-40 as I could into where the steering shaft meets the steering rack under the rubber boot. This really seemed to help, and I hope fixed it for the long term. Basically I think in my case the torque sensor was sticking as the wheel was rotating, as I didn't have any problem with the connectors, etc. after sodering and replacing as others had done. Hopefully lubricating around the torque sensor has done the job. I could definitely tell it helped when I did it, just hoping that it remains "fixed"

I will say it again. 99.99% of the time after you have cleaned/sdoldered the connectors up top (the ones that are near the overflow bottle), it is the connector on the steering rack. Clean this.
When it is cold it will do it, but when there is heat soak it won't. Thus the connector on the steering rack is not making a 100% connection when cold.

Finally after all these years, someone comes in with an actual solution . I already tried cleaning all the contacts and no dice. Will give the one by the rack a real good going over this time .... Fingers xd
