Solution Posting: Car stalls on highway Limp Mode Won't Restart
Okay so to save someone in need of having to search through pages and pages of blah blah blah, I'm posting a common problem and the solution I found.
Story goes as follows:
2005 RX-8 6speed with 60,000 miles.
After driving along the highway for 20 miles at ~60mph cruising my car's rev's drop from 5000rpm to 3000rpm and won't rev past 3000rpm in any other gear. The car is sputtering to stay alive and I can not power or speed up.
I pull over to the side of the road and continue to try to keep the car alive in Neutral but the gas pedal doesn't add fuel in a predictable way. With my foot off the gas the car finally stalls.
I try to restart the car, it cranks but won't start up. It almost starts but won't keep an idle.
I finally call for a tow and have it towed to my garage.
After much trouble shooting I realize it's not an electrical problem. I had previously installed new coils, wires, plugs.
While trying to crank the car I hammer/tap on the fuel pump and finally the car starts up but fails to idle again.
Solution: Install a new fuel pump and the car is good to go.
I had previously had an experience that resulted in my car stalling on the highway but it started up again and ran fine for 1 week before this major problem. If you are having a similar problem, you may want to do some preventative maintenance and replace your fuel pump.
When reading the threads a lot of people mentioned it might be coils, a blocked up cat, a dirty MAF sensor, and other things but none of these things were it for me. I hope my solution helps someone out there quickly.
