OK...

If you ordered a Neutral Switch for Series 1 6 Speed Manual..
This is the Part Number Y612-17-640B.....unchanged.

It is ONLY if you order a Reverse Switch (Y611-17-640 or 640A) will it then supersede to the Neutral Switch of Y612-17-640B.

So I don't understand the issue, unless they sent you the wrong switch from another Mazda??
Or it could be wrongly packaged, correct Part Number, wrong Part Inside...it can happen?

The 5 Speed Manual Boxes were not sold in the USA or Australia, but were in the UK..wowo76, it would make it MUCH EASIER to help members like yourself (and others) if you completed your LOCATION details.

I can also confirm that there are differences for the switch, as I too got to experience the ordeal this weekend. Thread diameter is different.

My understanding now is that 640A is superseded by 640B, however you have to order 640B and specify which switch you need. I needed to replace my reverse switch, however ordered 640B neutral switch, thinking they are interchangeable. I think I needed to order 640B reverse switch, which by all logic makes sense, I just didnt know #1, the reverse switch actually existed, since the two parts were supposed to be interchangeable, figured just the neutral switch was used for both and #2, I didn't know two parts with the same exact part number could possibly be different.

In this case, they are. Chalk it up as a learning experience. From the links I followed to order a new switch, @ onlinemazdaparts.com, I didn't notice at the time you can get part 640B neutral switch (which is what I have, and don't need) and apparently 640B back up switch (what I need). Again, the whole same part number, different parts thing caught me by surprise, but if this was to help anyone in the future, I'll be happy.

Hopefully wowo needs a neutral switch still and was sent a reverse switch, so we can trade each other

HUH??...

Forget the END f the Part Number, it is the Front part..

If you ORDER the ORIGINAL Reverse Switch of p/n Y611, they then supply you the Y612 Neutral Switch.

If you Order a Neutral Switch Y612 you are suppled a Y612.

Mazda NAO (AFAIK) does not supply the original Y611 Reverse Switch, they ONLY supply the Y612 Neutral which is also used as a Reverse Switch.

This need clarification, these details have remained on US Mazda parts website for many years now...so I doubt they are wrong.

However, I am trying to get my head around where YOU SAY the Diametre of the thread (screw in) is different between these ORIGINAL switches???...how can this be??

I was under the impression the Only difference was the wiring lead length.?

So someone/thing is wrong...??

I was under the impression the original part number for the reverse switch was Y61217640A. This was superseded by Y61217640B as per onlinemazdaparts.com. Difference between the two is that last letter, nothing to do with the beginning. If the original reverse switch part number is Y611176640A (I come up with no part found?), then I didnt know that. However if you search Y612117640A, it will say superseded by 640B (beginning #'s the same).

Anyhow, yes the parts appear to be different, thread diameter for neutral switch is not thick enough to thread into where reverse switch goes. Also the connectors are different. I was going to chop the old connectors and solder to the new switch, thankfully I tried threading the switch first and saw it wasn't going to work.

Hopefully wowo responds to my PM and we can compare stories and make a swap, assuming we have the part each other needs.

Edit: ASH8, from an earlier post of yours, I found part number Y611-17-640. I did search that one(Without the A on the end) and it does come up with superseded by Y611-17-640B - back up switch.

As stated before, I believe the parts number are the SAME, but you can get that part number for NEUTRAL SWITCH, or for BACK UP SWITCH. Just have to make sure you choose the right one for the application. When I ordered I just saw the listing for neutral switch, read that it was interchangeable so ordered it. Had I seen the listing for back up switch, I would have just gotten that, thinking both parts were the same anyhow, but that fit what I needed to replace so I might as well get that. There must be some sort of difference. Do I know for sure? Nope, but I ordered that part number, under the label neutral switch and can say that there's no way it will work in place of my reverse switch.

Mate, WHEREVER you are getting your information from YOU are Wrong...

I am not going to repeat what I have already Posted...READ it PLEASE...

Please don't tell me "how" to read Mazda Parts as I have only been doing it for a few decades.

Please LOOK at the Image, taken from Latest (Japan) Mazda Electronic Parts Catalog.

It is Mazda North American Operations WHO has Superseded these Parts...
And as I said from here (Australia), I cant understand them being Wrong after all these years...It would have or should of been corrected by now IF they are wrong..

ALL iterations of the REVERSE SWITCH (Switch Back Up Lamp), supersede to the same Mazda Part Number (according to MNAO)
That is..
Y611-17-640 Supersedes to Y612-17-640B Neutral Switch
Y611-17-640A Supersedes to Y612-17-640B Neutral Switch
So Y612-17-640B Neutral Switch IS Used for the BRAKE Switch.

ALL iterations of the NEUTRAL SWITCH (Switch, Park & Neutral), supersedes to the same Neutral Switch.
Part Number Model CODE is UNCHANGED (Y612)
That is ...
Y612-17-640 Supersedes to Y612-17-640B Neutral Switch
Y612-17-640A Supersedes to Y612-17-640B Neutral Switch

WRONG Mate...

Y611-17-640 with or without (iteration) letter of A on the end, supersedes to Y612-17-640B.

I appreciate you taking the time. I've gone through all that many times over the weekend and I understand. I was just trying to explain things from my perspective. Simple fact is that I have the neutral switch which is supposed to be interchangeable with the reverse switch, but it is not. There is no confusing, possible I received the wrong part? Sure, anything is possible... but it looks like it should fit the bill, just that the thread diameter is incorrect and off by a little, and again the connectors would have to be chopped and soldered. Neutral switch OEM connectors are white, Reverse switch OEM connectors are black, and the connectors themselves appear to be different.

Earlier in this thread, alnielson gave his opinion in saying no they are not interchangeable, "They are different sizes where they screw into the trans." In my case, and it appears in wowo76's case (I think) this appears to be 100% true.

We'll get this figured out, I'm in no hurry as the leak wasn't too alarming, just felt I should finally get to it after leaking for like 4 months. I'm more concerned about saving the new manual tranny fluid I put in so I dont have to pay another 30 bucks for more :D

PS, I believe I was mixing up my A's and B's on the end of the part numbers earlier in the thread.. to further confuse things... sigh, its been a long weekend for me

You said this /\ which is incorrect, as I said, Forget about the END part of the Part Number the A, or B...at the moment...

It is the FRONT part or Model Code of the Part Number you are mistaken in....

Again, you said the Y611-17-640 supers to a Y611-17-640B, it Does not It goes to Y612-17-640B , not Y611 as you said.

Technically for Parts SUPPLY, the Y611 Switch in North America does not Exist.

I checked out another US Mazda Dealer Parts Site and the same information resulted...

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...&siteid=215334

As the Y612-17-640B Description says...
Electrical - Chassis electrical - Switches - Back-up switch Back-up switch, rx-8 2004 - 2008
And..same part number..
Electrical - Chassis electrical - Switches - Neutral safety switch Neutral safety switch, rx-8 2004 - 2008

You said..
but it looks like it should fit the bill..
So looks like some progress for you which is good!

Here is a Parts Sketch...

The 17-640A highlighted in Red, is the Neutral Switch, which installs on the Left Side or Drivers Side of Transmission (LH Drive) and P/N Y612-17-640B Neutral Switch.

The 17-640B on the Other side of trans case (Right Hand-Passenger LHD) is for the Brake Switch.
Original P/N Y611-17-640A, which supersedes to the Y612.

So just remember, Don't try and install your RH Original (I guess faulty) in the Left Side where Neutral Switch goes, as the Interchangeability Goes ONE way, not Both.

So to put this in a simple perspective..

ALL Neutral Switches for ALL 2004-2008 RX-8's remain unchanged and the same Y612-17-640B.

It is ONLY when you renew your originally installed 'faulty' Brake Switch (on Right Side of Transmission) do you use the Y612-17-640B Neutral Switch.

Yes, some modifications to wiring connectors is required.

Over and out..

While I hate to bring this thread back up, I pretty much don't want anyone else to go through what I had to.

I sent in a request to Jason @ onlinemazdaparts.com, to return the Y612-17-640B switch I purchased, as it does not work as a reverse switch. He approved my request, replying back that he ran into the same problem with another earlier in the week.

Email excerpt:

"This is a stocking item so you can return it without issue. I ran into this with another customer the other day. The correct part# that you need for the back up lamp switch is Y611-17-640A. It currently is not coming up correctly when ordering so if you wish to order it just give me a call"

Y611-17-640A previously, when searched, came up as superseded to another part number, Y612-17-640B... the neutral switch I originally bought, that does not work in place of the reverse switch.

Now when you search it, it no longer gets superseded to that incorrect part.. still comes up as a Neutral Switch, but looks to be the correct part number, and $18.00 cheaper to boot.

I'm assuming Y611-17-640A is what I needed originally, just that the system would automatically forward you to the wrong part (Y612-17-640B). I will try and contact Jason tomorrow to verify this as I don't want to drain my tranny fluid again to have the wrong part again!

If you need a reverse switch Y611-17-640A is the part you need and don't accept any superseded parts!!! I would just call Jason if you run into this problem.

I am glad you took them to task over this...while not Jason's fault, it looks as if MNAO have rectified their incorrect Parts Superseding, Which I did say could be an issue, however, I don't understand why they took so long to recify..but, they still have the "description" wrong, the Y611 is a Reverse or Back Up Switch, and the Y612 is a Park & Neutral Switch for ALL Series 1 RX-8's, NOT Series 2.

So now there is No Model Code change to the Part Numbers..apart from the usual end number iterations.

When you order a Reverse Switch you get a Reverse Switch by Correct Part Number, but their description is still incorrect, it is not a SWITCH,PARK & NEUTRAL

# Y611-17-640A Back Up or Reverse $50.80 (on-line)

When or If you need the Park & Neutral Safety Switch, you get a Neutral Switch

# Y612-17-640B Neutral safety switch, rx-8, manual trans $68.29 (on-line)

Having just checked Mazda Europe Parts, Japan and in Australia, there is no change like Mazda US did, so someone there boo booed...apart from the same end number iterations of A to B.

Good detective work mkmike103, yes the Numbers No Longer Supersede, the only thing now incorrect is the Y611 "description".

If you or Jason ordered a Y612-17-640B Neutral Switch, you should get the correct Part by Part Number, and not the Y611 Reverse/Back Up Switch as before.

If you ordered a Y611-17-640A Reverse/Back Up Switch, again you should now receive the Y611 Reverse/Back Up Switch...as I said it looks as if MNAO have rectified the Supersession Issue, I just hope they have enough Parts Stock (quantity).

Just got an email from Mazda Australia...

y611-17-640 supersedes to y611-17-640b reverse sw $86.00 inc gst
y612-17-640b neutral $112.00 inc gst. Australian Prices..

So this confirms MNAO Parts were totally in the wrong..which I was going from as you are in the USA, sorry mate for being so wrong, and giving you false info, as I said normally distributors get this correct.

Plus one should not have to re-solder cable plugs, MMC Japan normally do not work like this.

I am just a little perplexed why and who did this at MNAO??.

Good Luck..

You gave no false info, you just used your resources and sometimes they aren't always right. No fault of yours. You took your time to help me and I thank you for that.

No problem.....I just pride myself on giving Correct Parts Information, always have..

When one does it right the first time, it saves EVERYONE a lot of hassles and down time.

What I hate are smart *** customers who like to trick the guy behind the counter.

Reviving this one from the dead. I replaced my leaking back-up lamp switch (The one adjacent to the catalytic converter) this weekend. The part number is Y611-17640A and it cost me about $65. A 27mm combination wrench is the tool for this job.

Now I'm hoping for some advice on how to shield this thing to protect the new switch from the heat. I have a BHR midpipe with the catalytic converter option and the switch sits directly adjacent to the cat which does not have a heat shield around it.

I noticed the leak the morning following a spirited day of driving, so I'm wondering if there is some novel approach to shielding the switch from being melted.

Thanks!
Bryan
