Intake mesh air screens

Hi guys, Just a quick question - had a search but couldn't find much on the screens themselves!

I have a simota c/f air filter inplace of the stock - which wasn't fit by me, as it doesn't even connect properly and probably sucks in a good deal of hot air from the engine bay! Anyway... When it was fit they removed both of the mesh screens - and so my idle suffers badly. It goes up and down constantly, and sometimes just stalls. I know it's something to do with the MAF because as soon as I unplug it my idle is perfect. Plug it back in and it's awful again. I tried a new MAF sensor and had exactly the same problem - so I figure the screens/intake is to blame!

Anyway, down to my question. I'm buying a second hand stock airbox from ebay, and am trying to make sure it has both screens included. The seller can see one (just behind the MAF as you look towards the intake) but can't find the other one.

Where are the two screens actually located??

Thanks alot,

Gordon

behind the maf and one is inside the box, at the bell mouth.

So if you were to take the airbox off where it connects to the acordian tube part, BOTH screens would be inside the part you've removed?

Thanks!

You dont need both. I hade on on my Racing Beat REVi which worked great for years and years. Accidentally tore the mesh a couple of weeks ago while cleaning intake so I left it off. Car stalled today so I know it is due to the lack of a mesh screen since my car never stalls. I have read here that people are getting replacement screens at Home Depot in the window screen area and other website sell mesh screens. I believe they were using 5/32 steel mesh but need to do more DD. I am going to be looking tomorrow to stop the stall issue. Before my REVi I had an AEM air intake without screens and it was a POS. I beleive that each screen kills one HP from what I read but I will gladly give a 1 hp in exchange for a nonstalling car The screen is only there

From Racing BEAT web site
Does the REVi Intake retain these mesh screens?

We determined early on that it would be necessary to incorporate at least one mesh intake screen in our intake system. Mazda originally planned to use just one screen, but during late testing they determined that they needed to add one additional screen to provide good idle stability. During development and testing of the our intake we determined that we needed only one screen because the REVi entrance into the MAF sensor was very "balanced" – that is air enters into the inlet air horn uniformly form all sides. In the stock air box, Mazda chose to cut away a portion of the air horn to get a longer tuned length. This compromised design caused the flow to "swirl" as it entered the bell and continued swirling as it passed the MAF sensor, resulting in an unacceptable variable output reading. Tests showed that the use of one mesh screen in the stock box reduced this "swirl" condition; the addition of a second screen eliminated this from occurring.

Revi Intake System
Unfortunately, each screen costs about 1 HP at high RPM, so using fewer screens is an advantage. In our dyno testing at "idle", we found that the MAF sensor voltage output from the stock air box (two screens) and the Racing Beat REVi Intake (1 screen) both have about .005 volt "scatter" – natural fluctuations with time. By contrast, another popular aftermarket intake kit (with no screens) has roughly .050 volt scatter – 10 times as much! – which causes idle instability and possible engine stalling.

Bought the honeycomb screen. Strange enough I didnt have another stall until the day of recieving my new honeycomb air straightener. Just put it on today and notice a better idle. Do not see any indicators to believe I will experience another stall due to a lack of a screen. Little pricey due to their outrageous shipping and handling costs though.
