Transmission question
I have read through many searched threads and found a bunch of similar posts, but they all had something unique about them that didn't quite fit in with my problem.
I have a winding/whining sound only when in gears 1-4 while accelerating. When I release the gas, it dies down and hear nothing. 5th-6th, I don't seem to notice it, maybe because of road noise, etc., but I couldn't hear it. As RPMs increase it gets louder.
I have an 05' with 80K miles, manual. Never heard this sound until now. Before I take it in, was wondering if anyone could give any insight on possible problem.
I have read that it was normal to hear a "whining" sound on the 8, but with 80K miles for it to start?

A little update. When shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th... the whirring noise stops when I go into neutral, and when just as I am putting it into the next gear, the whirring noise will kind of have a "burst" when the next gear is engaging.
The sound is similar to that of the little toy cars that you push forward and it gos. (if you understand which toy I am talking about)

The fluids looked fine, didn't see any abnormalities.
Is the synchro syncing something I should avoid driving the car in, or is it alright for the most part?
Also, I have noticed there is kind a fairly loud whirring noise (kind of like a rough idle sound with out the physical roughness, if that makes sense) when the clutch is not pressed, and goes completely away when pressed on idle. If I rev up the RPMs in neutral, I can still here it. I do not notice it when the car is in gear.
I live about 80+ miles from a real mechanic shop, and I am afraid to drive it. Just trying to boil a diagnostic to see if it's needed to get a tow (which I am trying to avoid) or if I can drive the distance without messing something up more.
