Gas Pump Overfill leads to P2402
I've owned my car since it was new I have never overfilled my car at a station before in my 130k miles on the car. I was filling up my car as usual when suddenly gas began to shoot out of the rubber boot that covers the metal hose underneath. It was like a fountain of gas shooting all over the back end and trunk of my car. I quickly stopped the pump and went inside the service station to tell the person manning the front of the counter about the leak. He reluctantly came outside to see what I was talking about. When I pulled the pump out of my filler hole, gasoline was filled to the brim of the filler neck.
We then proceeded to go back in the station and he called the owner of the station. Saying that owner would come by in 15 min or so. He refunded me $5 cash for my overfill. I left the station thinking there was no problem. Then I proceeded to go across the street to a do-it-yourself car washing station to rinse off all the gas with the $5 he refunded me. At the time I did not think anything of it, but I decided to drive the car in order to burn off some of the gas in the tank. At first there was hesitation in the throttle of the car and at a stop sign, it turned off... Eventually, this problem went away and I parked the car. The inside of the car reeked of gasoline for more than a week.
The next day I got a check engine light. I was able to get the check engine light scanned at a local Autozone to see what the issues were. I got two codes: P0446 - EVAP system vent control circuit problem and P2402 - EVAP system leak detection pump control circuit high. Theses are all items attached to the gas tank. The EVAP system leak test is done on the car when it is off, so that makes sense.
Eventually the P0446 went away but the P2402 remains. Has anyone ever replaced their leak detection pump without having to remove the exhaust/midpipe/driveshaft/diff?
