Door mirror assembly rattle question

I'd love any insights from anybody who has taken apart the door mirror before.

In the picture below, the colored portion of the mirror is loose and making a rattle whenever I close the door. It its noticeably looser than the other side.

The question is this. Is there some sort of a fastener that secures the colored section of the door mirror to the assembly? Or is it a snap on affair, and the fact that it is loose means something has broke?

Its been this was as long as I have had the car.

The rattle fix thread has posts related to this problem. I had the same issue and posted my solution: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discuss...0/#post4399133

That thread describes it perfectly! I just wonder how it got into that state in the first place.
