Lightbulb Power Potential versus Gas Mileage

Okay, so there is a fairly wide range of gas mileage figures for our RX-8s. Sure, everyone drives a little differently, but that still can't account for some people down in the 14 mpg range (even when they granny it), while others are up over 20.

From threads in the Canzoomer forum, it appears that the MAF sensor has a lot of variability from car to car which changes the performance and, I'm guessing, the mileage, too.

So, has anyone tried to tie together power potential versus miles per gallon? In other words, would adding a Canzoomer box or an e-manage to a low mpg car then net much better results than a high mpg car? Do cars that have been dynoed show a correlation between rwhp and mpg? Does this seem absolutely logical or am I missing something?

~ Matt

(I'm around 17 mpg average, I think. I've got it on a spreadsheet at home, but don't remember the exact number. I've got 2800 miles on my car.)

yeah, with the way the a/f maps are set up on this car there probably is a slight correlation between low power and low mpg.

the thing is though, that since CZ came out with his box, like none of the people who bought it and use it have really cared about their mpg numbers enough to record and analyze them (as far as i know), so i don't know if there has been any real measurable difference.

Well, what I'm thinking is that those folks who had low mpg before a Canzoomer upgrade will get more power out of it than those that had high mpg before the upgrade.

I am with you Vaillant. I am at 17 avg. All the time.

I agree that it must be the tuning. Granted, some cars do come out of the factory "more perfect" than others. But not like this. People have shown (quite a few times, I think Wakeech is one) that better tuning increases HP as well as MPG.

However, I am still wary. I would have expected to see some 14 mpg guys trying to tackle this issue by tuning. But still, I see no threads devoted to this concept.

Basically, I agree, but not completely because there is a lack of real proof as of right now. Until we get some people tuning and processing BEFORE/AFTER data, we will not KNOW an answer.
