Angry im so DONE with the rx8s transmission

this transmission ONLY HAS 10,000 miles on it. and today, i discovered it grinds from 3-4 at redline. im even running redline mt90!

it happened once before, a few weeks ago. but then when i did another wot run, it didnt present itself. but now? twice in row. so i guess WOT from 3-4 is out. and that is really the shift i use the most at full throttle.

i just bought a vent gauge pod and red lugs. but thats it. im not spending a dime on this car more, until that trans is gone. if something new (and major) comes up, well, i might consider selling the car. i would consider it, but i've spent so much on the car (and the resale is so bad) that its just not worth it.

im leaving the rotary community. not soon, but im leaving.

im not leaving the rx8 community however. my greddy turbo kit is sold (at least the buyer has sent me 1 check already, and the 2nd check is supposedly in the mail right now.) i was going to go the SFR turbo route, but nope, not anymore. see, the SFR is $5000+supporting mods, and I JUST REPLACED MY TRANSMISSION at the cost of $3000 BACK IN AUGUST. new clutch, flywheel surface, etc. my previous clutch had less than 4000 miles and it got replaced!

so that would be $8000 to spend on this car, with an engine thats prone to popping and a transmission thats prone to grinding.

mazda gave us a weak enough engine, the least they could have done is given us a bulletproof transmission.

so, the money that was allotted to a turbo and the money that would have to be spent on a new transmission is going to be spent elsewhere.

and that elsewhere? ls1+t56. yep, engine swap time. im sick of our drivetrain. and the ls1+t56 are bulletproof. and **** the weight balance, i'll make it up by having so much torque i'll keep the nose off the ground all the time. so until i have 8 grand, i guess i'l be reading up on engine swaps.

piece of **** transmission.

im considering getting a cheap DD, maybe an e30.

im going to write a letter to MNAO about how pissed off i am.

i almost came to this same conclusion. Some how 8k after a new trans 2nd gear grinds...it was a reman that they installed and mazda refused to look at it because of my mods. none of which are on the drive train.

Best of luck kersh, i hope everything works out for you man.

I wonder if S2000 owners have as many issues with their transmissions as we do. We share an almost identical aisin 6 speed.

when they were replacing the engine, Kevin pulled my transmission apart and looked at it, he said it looks fine, it has some wear of course 48K miles. but it looks ok.

and yes I drive pretty hard ...

so ...

kersh,

silly idea. maybe drain and flush the oil in the tranny.

put in just some stock of the shelf no big name not syn oil... try the 90-140 version. see what happens.

yes it is cold up there be careful on your cold shifts to second.. but really once it is warm see what happens.. cheap easy fun..

beers

That sucks about your transmission, kersh. Damn I hate dropping cash on something and then have it break again in no time... but.... gotta admit... I sure would like to see you drop an LS1 T56 in your car!!! Hell ya LOL

Weird, my tranny has over 100k on it and a ton of track abuse and is still going strong (knocks on wood).

simple non exotic oil.. try it..

i have a tranny that has ~90k miles on it.. works perfect.. better than the one that has 6k miles on it now..

sometimes less is more..

Or you can try 1.5 qrts of Redline 75w90 diff oil and .5 qrts of Redline ATF. We used to use it on our race cars when they were having shift issues.

Maybe have a transmission shop just upgrade the weak links. Granted, it would still run you near the cost of a new trans, but It would last longer.

the WOT shift you do most is at over 90+ mph?
Umm, sorry Kersh but maybe that has something to do with it???

have you checked your clutch pedal?
if it's not engaging ALL the way or is flexing in any way, that could be part of the problem.

really sorry to hear you're having these problems.

just be glad it's only a grind

the last 2nd gear blowup is being rebuilt now; needs a new 2nd gear, countershaft, input shaft, and cluster gear. Since it only had 100 racing miles on it from the last rebuild when all the bearings, synchros, shift forks were replaced that's all still good
