Thumbs up AT in Manual Mode (4spd & 6spd)

Hmm.. I love to drive in manual mode, it's just plainly fun. I don't use the shifters on the wheel to switch gears, I use the ****. I somehow like using that better. Anyways, I was thinking, do you believe going pass 6K (RPM's) consently; damages the car's performance (AT). Since it is a auto, not a manual. Cause I do enjoy that sound when almost hitting the redline. I mostly only use it on open roads anyhow. The few that I find here in Miami.. I got a 6 spd AT btw.. Any other auto users here do the same? Or do I find myself alone here?

I have a MT and hit the redline on the Palmetto daily. I believe no matter AT or MT it is good to redline the engine every now and then to prevent carbon buildup.

Where-about in Miami do you live? Ever goto Fuddruckers on mondays?

ya it's normal to burn alot of oil (and go through alotta gas) if you are driving it hard... I live right near toronto, and redline the car almost every day on the 404. I'm also usually over 200km/h daily 2 though lol.

I also have an 06 AT. I redline my 8 everyday I drive it. I also had a slight concern over the burning oil I smelled, so the above post is a reassurance. I really do prefer 'shifting' with the 'stick' more than the shifters on the steering wheel. It makes me feel like I am driving MT more... Ah, I miss MT's..

I have the 4AT and shift with both the stick and the paddles, depending on mood. I also rev it a lot. I tell myself sometimes i'm not going to to save some gas, but I do anyway I write the added cost of revving off to "entertainment expense".

I have the 06 AT. I was also concerned about redlining, so thanks for the info. I do it quite often. I live in a small town where there are not really any busy highways to blend in. I find myself usually redlining on back roads, but have to slow down for tight turns. It's really fun. I found about a quarter mile maybe more stretch just 2 days ago in manual mode and redlining I believe up the 3rd gear and hit 90. Pretty intense for the small road I was on. I use the **** shifter usually when I am pushing it. If I pull into a parking lot, I just use the steering wheel shifters.

I oil smell concerned me at first, but figured it was normal for the amount it uses.

When I run my '04 AT hard for some fun, I find that I can shift REALLY deep in the RPM's with 2nd. I'm talking like 8k. Not really sure if it makes a huge difference, but I like to think it does. I do know that when i drop it into 3rd from that deep shift, I'm in a pretty good rpm range for power.

oh yeah, my shifts are 45, 80, 120 mph. those are rough, sometimes its a little above or below.

Almost never drive my 4AT in full auto. Only do it if the traffic makes me putter along at 45.
In stop and go - i still run in manual cause I hate it putting me in 4th at 30mph.
My shift points at redline about the same, 45, 83, and 120 - although to be honest haven't fully redlined 3rd yet. Only had it a couple months, and not much opportunity to pass 110 in the ATL. Can't wait to get some more time in the country....

2 side notes -
1) It is already broken in - an 05 I bought with 9500 miles.
2) I am spending less and less time on this board because am sick of the AT hating. Nice to talk to people that enjoy there car as I do. It's such a waste because this site basically makes it useless to ask a real question relating to an AT. And they wonder why they are not getting as many waves - I still wave, but will spend most of my time on the local 8 site.

Much agreed. I have a 6 port. Shifts are about 30 60 90, and thats as far as I have gotten. Not really anywhere close by to do any faster.

Well first I have an AT 04 GT w/all the options, I actually like driving in manual mode a lot as well. If you shift exactly at the right time right at red line th car actually goes a little bit past it, shift speeds are the same though. 45/46 ; 83; 122 ; and 125 the speed limiter kicks in and holds the rpms in 4th around 4000 and it wont go any faster, regardless of wind direction or up/down hill.

Zooming around at 75 mph in 2nd gear is a blast - who needs a radio?
