Smile Is the SSV or Secondary Shutter Valve Important for Forced Induction Setups?

Hi there,

I hope your new year is going well!

Is the SSV or Secondary Shutter Valve Important for Forced Induction Setups? We will be tuning with the Cobb AccessPort.

I did some research on the forum, but could not find a definitive answer. Some say it is good for low end to have the SSV be closed, and in the higher RPM for the SSV to be open to allow more airflow.

I'd like to know if this is something really necessary for Forced Induction setups, such as a 60 trim turbo, etc.

Thanks for your help,
Mark

Leave it open and low end (below 3500)will suffer , leave it closed and mid range right through to top end will suffer.

Comprehension fail.

Replace "inhaler" with "search engine"

Thumbs up

WCS,

May I have your name? My name is Mark by the way and I thank you for your informative and clever posts that really get my brain thinking..

I figured out that it is very important for the RX8 engine because it helps the low end of the power band, while it is closed. It only should open up at higher RPMs to increase flow... Also effects the idle..

Now, this is probably something to keep in mind during the tune, correct? Does the open / close value need to be adjusted for FI?

I went ahead and tested the part and it moved freely. The diaphragm of the SSV seemed to be fine as well.

I'm very excited to get this running and tune the car. I'm still tossing between Jeff and Scott.. I know that with Jeff, I can buy a COBB AP with tuning package, but with scott, I think he allows me to see the maps.. hmm.. So who is the most reliable option?? I'd like to be able to get the car properly tuned and running well, so I can drive over 350 miles every so often..

Take care and hope you guys are having a fantastic new year so far!

Best wishes,
Mark

You need to remember the location of the secondary injectors.....in relation to SSV opening. And also that you cant control the timing of the injector staging. Or when the SV opens...might not need to worry about it much (Unless you go to a full standalone )

i wonder if opening the ssv earlier (if you could do it)would improve turbo spool up

I have to admit ( here comes another face slap thing from Team--lol!) that I have ofter wondered about the intake valves and FI. Then after some intense comtimplation I realized two things:
1- forced induction really doesnt really change the general air flow characteristics of the engine
2- if the intake valves are re-timed then the entire engine prep will have to be changed--injector staging, better low rpm intake velocity, the tune, possibily the injectors themselves ( may need better atomization?) etc.

Me I rather just have the 4 injector set up like the S2 engine, but that is yet to come.

So when you are in boost, how does the SSV function? The SSV is normally closed and is open under vacuum via ssv solenoid at the set RPM range...

A vacuum accumulator.

Until you have used all of the vac in the accumulator

There were some problems with the Formula Mazda cars I think that ran at WOT for long periods running the accumulators down...not sure what ever came of that

was that the valves or the brake booster? I cant remember.
The little accumulator doesnt hold much. If it was the valve then they must have had a leak somewhere?
Come to think of it where does the vacuum bleed off when the ssv closes?
Heck for track I dont see why people even run the ssv. I doubt seriously if they ever see below 4K rpm.

.
Through the solenoid valve.

It needs to be open ..... so they really have to "run it" .
