Can you buy the stock Mazda RX-8 DVD Nav System after purchase?

Hi. I am currently deciding what my next car will be, and I am heavily leaning towards the RX-8, but I am debating if I want to shell out 2 grand for the DVD navigation system.

My question is this, if I decide NOT to get it, then change my mind, could I go down to the dealer, buy it and have it installed?

Basically, is this a factory only option?

I currently own an 04 Camry SE V6, and I went in asking about it, and I was told it was a factory only option. You can buy it from the parts counter, but its considered a replacement thing (At 5k no less!) and they wont install it flat out (I called a bunch of dealers, no one would touch it). On the Camry installation would be a minor issue so you could install it yourself (although I'd never pay 5k for it), since its just simply a unit the replaces the current unit, with a built in dvd slot, etc etc. The only tricky part would be the GPS antenna which mounts to the firewall. With the RX-8 however, installation would be MUCH more complex and would likely require a dealer. Not only is there the central unit which includes the open button and such, but the GPS, the console navigation buttons, the rear dvd slot, etc etc. So if the RX-8 dealer wouldn't install it, I'd likely just have to forget it.

If this is a factory only option, this will also make my finding a car much more complex. I wanted just flat out manual with sport package, NAV, and that's it. I also wanted a sunroof, but I don't want all the other stuff that is required (leather and heated seats in 100 degree weather aren't worth the extra k's) in order to get it, so I'm forgetting it. The Nav system is likely only going to be included from the factory on touring and grand touring cars. I could therefore then order the car built to my specs, but I'd get a crappy crappy deal as opposed to walking in and buying off the lot.

Anyone have any input in this area? If I ask the dealer pre sale they will likely say factory or initial sale only, since they want to sell it to me when I buy the car, not later.

If you want a NAV system shell out the 2k to buy it with the car. It is a hell of alot more $$$ to add it after.

If you want factory nav in your 8... I'd say forget it. You need to get it factory installed. Have you tried searching for a car setup the way you want it on Mazda's site?

You could just buy an aftermarket stereo/nav or nav only unit and install that in the 8. Either in the stock stereo location or in the stock nav location.

Another option is to build a carputer (car computer). It's only as complicated as you wish to make it. Try http://www.mp3car.com for lots of info on it. Going this route you can get gigs or as one guy with a 3 Series has done 1.1 tera of mp3, video/Divx, etc.; DVD; internet access, anything you can think of inaddition to nav. Costs... can run you from $600 to ??? It all depends on what you want, how you install it, etc.

I don't know why there are two identical threads going on the first page, but here is the other guy asking this question:

I'm interested in buy an aftermarket stock navigation panel. I only want the panel and not the nav because I want to put a 7" VGA display into it myself. Does anyone have any idea where u could buy something like this? Say if you did have the NAV and the dash cracked...where might u go to get it replaced?

Forget it, you gonna spend 3k+ to buy all the stuff (hardware and harness), then you have to mount everything and it is DAMN HARD (prolly a specialized person would ask you more than 500$ to put everything in), afaik only one person had success in this (you'll find his thread on this forum). You may ask for any part to mazdaparts.com (they will ask for the pieces directly in Japan).
I recommend you to find a different solution (aftermarket navigator), that would looks like the stock one (they have similar dash boards), they are cheaper, they works better!

You can get the Nav hood here: http://www.mazdaparts.com/ProductDet...000-1155120408

You may be better off getting a Magellan Roadmate and the OEM Nav Tray though:

while the look of factory nav is cool... the nav itself compared to other solutions offered in the market, just sucks.

For a little more then 1/3rd the cost of getting a true factory nav put in AFTER you bought the car, you could get a top of the line Nav unit or build a carputer as mentioned by others. It would be the only real way to go in my opinion, its cheaper and better

4 years to supercharge,

Is there a way if I buy that factory nav mount and it says the screen comes with it, is it possible that it moves up and down like if you buy it already installed from the factory...motorized? Also is there a way that I could play dvds with it? I mean for 1200 at mazdaparts I will jump all over it if I am able to get those 2 things to work. Let me know. And thanks!

For that much money, it'd better be complete with the motorized mechanism, so yes, you should be able to raise and lower the screen just like the factory unit. However, your current dash top panel does not have the cutouts for the two switches that open/close and tilt the screen, and I don't know if mazdaparts' offering does contain those switches (and all the necessary wiring) or not. You can probably cut the existing panel and use different switches for this though.
Regarding DVDs, mazdaparts also offers an AVElectronics kit that allows playing DVDs on the factory screen, so I suppose if you have a suitable DVD drive, you should be able to do it.

you chuck the stock screen, add in a $400 xenarc touchscreen. it will still move up and down like stock. then the display will be vga comaptible and have a usb connection for the touchscreen mouse. hook that into your carputer and do whatever you want to it.

Well guys I found a solucion, I have a 2004 and I got a 2011 nav from sanyo made for grand touring rx8 that's fit just well did have to make a couple of cuts inside dash in soft plastic. Had to use my 2004 air controls, 2011 are different. Also had to relocate top air vents. But al the system is inside the radio. just plugged in original radio plugs and all runned perfect and I am using all original controls on steering wheel
