Flame throwing exhaust?

OK, most of us have seen THIS video of the flame throwing Borla exhaust.

What if some kind of igniter was installed near the tips with a button so you could have "Flames on demand"?? Would this work?

Sure it would be illegal but it would be fun!

Hm, probably melts your backside. Besides, it's like the lamest, pimply geek thing without style to do. It's so utterly fake, that most people will just laugh at it. But to each his own I guess

How is it fake? The borla exhaust shoots flames if the tips get hot enough (see the video).

Scissor doors, goofy body kits, vinyl anything, big wings, cut springs and the list goes on are much worse IMO.

the definitive website for flames is http://www.gotflames.net/

One of the interesting things is that most of the flame kits are for carbureted cars because you have to run rich. I wonder if the 8 runs rich enough to be a good flame thrower?

Who's 8 is that in the vid?

That Borla sounds WAY different from the other sound clips I've heard...

The car in the video is mine. :D

When I filmed that video the only mod on the car was the Borla exhaust and I'd be really surprised if my car sounds any different from others with a Borla.

My stock 89 used to do that once I removed the cat, but with no other mods.

i thought the borla in the vid was just throwing flames because the exhaust was new, something like a protective coating burning off. Is that the case, or is it more of a permanent flame thrower?

The flames are just a by-product of aggressive driving, the Borla exhaust, and Mazda's excessively rich fuel maps. Below you'll see how I was able to create the pyrotechnics.

Warm up engine
Get the exhaust red hot by running the car over 6k RPMs for several minutes
Come to a stop or at least keep it under 60 MPH (slower = bigger flames)
Rev it hard (WOT) and lift off on the throttle quickly
INSTANT FLAMES!!!
As you can see, it is not easy to get flames because the conditions have to be perfect to ignite the unburnt fuel. Likewise I have not seen any damage to the paint or body work on the car but your mileage may vary.

Flames as a result of running catless or rich, fine... Thoguh it's kind of scary you can get flames while having cats still in place. Just goes to show how incerdibly rich the car is running. However, the flame kits are about as rice as you can get.
