Sparco Steering Wheel Install Problems

Well I just installed a Daikei hub adapter, NRG Quick Release, and Sparco wheel. I'm having a few problems with it that I'm hoping to get some input on.

First, I had the wheels straight when I took the stock steering wheel off but can't seem to get the wheel dead center. It's either slightly to the left or the right (when I've taken the hub back off to try and get it straight). The splines from the steering column and hub adapter just won't line up in a manner that leaves the wheel dead center.

Is this something an alignment would solve?

Here's a bad pic of the wheel tilting to the left.

There are some other pics of the install in the above album.

The other problem is the DSC will not remain off. When I hit the button to disable it the light comes on but goes off after about a minute and then does not respond at all when I push the button again.

The TSC light remains illuminated all the time now. Is it correct to assume this means TSC is permanently disabled?

Is there a way to permanently disconnect/disable DSC and TSC.

Initially the airbag warning light didn't come on so I thought the resistor loom worked but it's on now. Any suggestions?

The car is primarily a track car.

Thanks for helping.

You can adjust the wheel with the steering rack from below......Adjust one side and take up the other....shifts the wheel

Sounds like this would be a pretty precise way of shifting the wheel about half an inch?

^^Cool. I may have to do that at the track because after doing the "pump brake" reset and the odometer hold reset the TSC light still remains on and the DSC which initially illuminated when I hit went back off after a minute. It wouldn't allow me to shut it off again.

I'm not sure I want to go without ABS at the track though..

The ECU on this car is a PITA. My airbag light won't go off but the resets got rid of the CEL for my lack of CAT. That'll return I'm sure.

Yup thats why I got the scangauge2 for reading the cel lights so I know its the cat not a missfire lol theres another plug you can pull and this one is by your left off by the door panel fuses. I think its called house fuse or something I cant recall what its called. Look into that one too for resetting the ecu.

Dan is right. You'll need to apply very small turns to the cad coated colored tie rods attached to the steering rack. The larger nut connected to the outer tie rod end (the small black steel 4" long cast piece that attaches to the spindle) requires loosening first. You need to be very careful with this as lossening and tighening will move the wheel. Make small attempts at this and you'll see what I mean. Email me if this is new to you and I can walk you through it. Make SMALL turns to both tie rod ends, drive it and try again.

Basically you need to do this one time and you should be good to go. We have to do this all the time when we do engine swaps. No big deal.

Thanks for your input guys.

Dom-I'll be looking at those fuses before I get it to the track. As it keep an eye on my gauge pod (especially when ambient temps are) are high can be a task let alone 4 lights additional (CEL, SRS, TSC, TPM) on the display.

Eric-I've got a set of coilovers on the way. Probably best to wait until those go on because I'll need an alignment anyway, which should address straightening the steering wheel correct?

Risky Biz-Thanks. That wheel has make a bigger difference than I expected. The feel for the car thru the sparco wheel has improved dramatically and I've got full view of the tach. I highly recommend doing it particularly if you track the car keeping in mind that deleting your airbag comes poses an increased safety risk.

Correct.

Remember to REQUEST from your alignment guy these things and/or do it yourself:

-Set tires to 40 psi
-Put 1/2 tank of fuel in the car
-Disconnect one sway bar end link for front rear
-Duplicate your weight in the driver's seat of the car. If you have to sit in the car---this is normal. We use Water Softener salt bags because yours truly doesn't like to sit in both our cars all the time (we align our cars BEFORE, DURING and AFTER an event).
-Remember that if you jack with your ride height with your new coilovers, this will usually change your alignment settings, corner weights, camber, toe, etc. So...............make your best guess on ride height and run it there for a while.
-I've found that shock settings don't matter when setting up a car. Others may disagree
-Get a printout of your settings to compar to the next time you have your car aligned

Happy Rotoring

Thanks for the tips on alignment. That's a whole new can of worms isn't it.. Looking at some of your pics your ride height doesn't look too aggressively lowered. How much can you reveal re: your camber, toe and caster settings..??

Any interest in contributing to this thread below? It would be a great assist to us to have some "racer expertise" on this subject.

Thanks.

I didn't. I used the Works Bell hub and a Sparco steering wheel. I wouldn't recommend removing the airbag for a street driven car, though.

potential thread jack, sorry.

But, this is a thread of folks that have worked with aftermarket wheels. I want to use my factory wheel, with a quick release as a spacer to move it out about an inch to an inch and a half. I have not found anything that takes the factor shaft interface, and provides a shaft interface. Any ideas? Any pictures of the back of a factory wheel?

Thanks,

Angry

Installed a Momo Trek with the NRG 3.0 hub and quick release, the resistors took the PS light away but same problem with the DSC light staying on. Any fix to date?

you need a resistor for it, probably the same one used for the MX5, a search should find it if you have any Google-fu skills

Hey rx8 peeps I finally fixed the dsc light on dash .......

Quick review.....thought there was an alignment problem....none..thought I had to clear using the car computer scan...nothing found to reset...

The problem is the nrg hub has vertical holes to align with the indicator canceling plastic insert ( which I believe is also the centre for the angle position sensor).

The stock steering has horizontal holes...see pics of fix..now there are no lights ...and the indicator works perfect

I just drilled holes in the nrg hub....
