newly bought rx-8 highpower hmmm
what a car. love it! Im writing all the way from norway. As some may have experienced, the rx-8 is kinda seldom car here in norway. Its only registered 134cars.. That number might be a lot higher down in the usa :P
Well. I drove the car 7hours two days ago on my way home from where I bought the car. The distance is over many mountains with MANY curves (you know, in the road, have to turn left/right alot). ...(my english isnt the bestest:P )
smooth gearshift, rotary/"superbike" engine sound and 50/50 balance in the chassi is was all needed to hold my big smile all the way home :D FUUnnny!

The only thing is.. well its 3 things..
1. right front light (the whole plastic container with the light bulbs in it) is soaking wet. A big "hole" is letting water in.. and the two back lights are also taking in some water.. its minimal though..
- solution. The seller already fixed 3 new light holders/containers/orwhatyoucallit for me.. should be in the mail within a week..

is it hard to change the lights? I think its easyer to change the two backlights, but in front? im not a mechanic, nor a english teacher...

- Can I drive around with the defect/soon defect thrust "thing" (dont know the english word for it). Does that make any more damage to anything under there?

I experience some sort of "mini-jumping-forward" its almost the same symptoms as a fully tuned car having full gass with to little fuel.. kinda like fuel cut, but not so bad. this is just dumb.. I dont believe anyone will understand this loong letter.. :P The "jumping" (again, cant the english word for it) is most when 1.gear in about 1000rpm - 4000rpm.

2. As for the noise you hear from underneath your car when the clutch pedal is depressed; that's your throw-out bearing. It's normal for the RX-8 to have that noise.
3. For the third question, maybe you're lugging the car? When you're not familiar with the car, they tend to make the car lug or jerk alot depending on how hard you step on the throttle as well as what RPMs you're in. This requires alot of practice and getting used to.

Hmm.. do you mean the WHOLE "light-package"? I dont need to change only the lights, but altso the little "cover/cointainer/holder"box/ that the lights are sitting in.

That can be very true, but the first miles I drove it, I cant remember to have that lugging... (lugging was the word I where looking for.)

Ok. It can be detonation. I dont know.. I'm using no led, 95. Its the ordinary fuel for cars in norway, expect diesel cars.. maybe I should use 98 octan then. I'll try that next fueling :D

the noise from under the car..
Talked to a mechanic over phone and he said that if the sound disappeared when I hit the clutch, it wasnt the clutch - thrust bearing that made that sound.
...it was the gear system..... he said he was absolutely sure.. :O
any other feedback, guys?

Congrats on your purchase.
Im having the same problem you are.
clack clack sound, when clutch is engaged to the tranny. If I PRESS on the clutch pedal (DISENGAGING THE CLUTCH FROM THE TRANNY) the sound stops.
Im also told it means its a transmission problem, not clutch or throw out bearing.
Im bringing it in next Monday (July 14th) to my local Mazda dealership to see whats up. Car is still under full warranty.
As for the fuel 95 RON is more than enough, as it equates to 90-91 Octane here in North America, and 91 is generaly the highest you get anywhere, and is what WE call super. And even for us, Super is only suggested, many run 89 Octane (probably around 91-93 RON) without any problems either.
Im in Montreal Canada, and Im guessing we get around the same temperature/seasons you get in Norway.
Id stick to 95 RON.
Check the RX8 owners club in the UK or the France RX8 club as well for more info (if you read french).

The noise from the "clutch"
I went to an mazda dealer now, and he told me that it was a thing in/with the transmission. And he recommended that I should not take it into service becouse of that. Partly bevcouse the of the problem wasnt that big, and partly becouse of the questions around wether this is going to be an insurance/quaranty case.
So to all of you that got this sound. It seems to me, that you might get it covered on the quaranty (i know its spelled wrong), but you also might not..
And the positive thing is that cars can drive around with this problem 200 000km without needing to change the "bearing" (dont know if thats the right english word for it). Thats what the mechanic at the mazda said to me.
Im just bringing it further to you as a tip, not an answer

well... Gotta admit that it is little bit disturbing knowing you got a problem with you're car when you drive around.. Irritating would be the right word.

thanks for nice answer Then i'll continue to fuel with the 95 oct. I'm gonna fill it with 98 next fueling, just to see if there's any difference though
and give me info after you had the car to the mazda mechanics, please? :=)

That sound that you 2are worried about is the throwout bearing everyone 8 owner that has a 6 speed has the noise it is common on all 8's nothing to worry about u just learn to not pay attention to it...

are you 110% sure? its kinda lame that every mechanic I talked to around here says that I should change it. that sound isnt good. and so on.
But you might have more knowing about that rx8 than the mechanics that usually changing oil on the audi stationwagen, volvo family car etc.

Hi.
There seem to be three 'common' complaints about clutch/tranny noise. None of them are really bad, just annoying.
The problem with noises is that they are often subjective to each owner. Try to be around other RX8's and speak to their owners / listen to their cars.
1. Throw-out bearing. This transfers the energy from the (rotating) clutch to the (stationary) clutch fork. This can be often described as a whirring or rattling when your foot is off the clutch, but can also be a slight squeal noise, when your foot is just starting to press the clutch. The only solution is a new bearing, which may or may not start to make the same noises within weeks, or never.... They don't often seize, just stay noisy for the life of the clutch. I wouldn't pull the transmission just for a slightly noisy t.o.b., but will always change it when the trans is out for any other reason (eg. clutch).
2. Clutch fork. The lever that connects the clutch slave cylinder with the throw-out bearing. This is like a rattle when the clutch is not pressed. Some heavy grease in the area where the pin from the slave cylinder presses the fork may help, for a while.
3. Transmission rattle. All manual transmissions have some rattle, the location of the RX8's transmission, and/or mounting and/or a thin case and/or gear play, seems to make this rattling more noticeable. There is play in the gears, and a shaft in the trans that rotates when in neutral with your foot off the clutch to keep the synchros for first gear spinning. This rattling may be more noticeable when the car is cold - the oil has dripped off the gears, and is thick - the rattle goes away as the trans warms; or when warm - the oil has thinned and loses viscosity.
The first step to diagnosing // quieting a noisy transmission is to replace the gear oil. Trans fluid changing is a maintenance item (every 30,000 km according to my manual), and not a difficult DIY. I suggest that you change to a quality synthetic fluid. I like RedLine 75w90NS.
In my current RX8, I have a little bit of transmission rattle when the engine is cold and at high idle. I notice it in my quiet garage... When the car is warm, I don't seem to notice it much (I guess I just tune it out) LOL....

ps. Note that there are also some other noises that can be expensive, like the input shaft bearing, clutch disk springs broken, etc. It is always best to have someone with lots of transmission experience make a diagnosis if you hear any new noises...

As im reading thorugh you're post, silver06, I came to think about yesterday when I stupidilly forgot my rear "floor carpet matt" (the thing thats lying on the floor where people have their foots) - on the vacuumer machine at the fuelstation... I vacumed my car after I had som friends in the back and ready to leave I forgot that I had that "carpet" left on the machine.. 2 hours after when my brain usually starts to remember important things, I went back to get it.. To my half-big surprise the "carpet" was not there...
The reason I came to think about it, is that you're the type that actually would go into the gas station and leave it behind the disk for the rightfull owner to get it when he's coming back looking for it. I can tell when I read you're good long post.
I'm actually pretty surprised over this good feedback, all this answers you get here at rx8club. At the norwegian mazda forum, I havent got a answer for my easy question, and that easy question did I ask for over 2 days ago
