Question How much does the Renesis weigh?

Wonder how much does the rotary engine weigh compare to a typical 4 cylinder engine like a K20z3. Reason I'm asking is saw info on the Ariel Atom and wonder if it would be lighter using a renesis engine instead of the honda motor.

We've been through this a few times and it seems no one really knows for sure. Well, people know but definitive info is difficult to find. Simplest answer is that it's heavier than some 4 cylinders and lighter than others. Dressed it seems to weigh a touch over 300 lbs. which is about 20 lbs. lighter than the F20C that was in the S2K.

That seems way low, does that include fluids?

Well Ike, these are *kind of* estimates, but also going from memory..

I believe the front + rear irons weigh around 35lb each, with the middle iron weighing about 40lb. The housings are roughly 15-20lb each. Rotors..10-12lb each.

I would expect the fully built shortblock to weigh in at roughly 150lb, assuming that my weights above are rather high. I can pick it up and carry it by myself, with the oil pan removed, but with the flywheel still on...so..

So where is Babylou getting this info? I've seen similar numbers elsewhere. Lastly, why is Mazda so tightlipped about the weight of the Renesis?

You're still missing a lot of things there. It's also important to note that some manufacturers include full exhaust with engine weights while others do not.

Some corrections. The rotors weigh approx. 9.2lb each (Source: Racing Beat)

The stock irons weigh roughly 26lb each (Source: Racing Beat, 1993 RX7)

With that knowledge, I would assume the housings are around 10-15lb.

That puts engine weight, with front cover + all gears, oil pump, etc, at around 150lb.

Like what? x.x

Apex seals? Oh..ok..set of 6 <.< 1 lb..or less..xD

With all the *big* parts added up (rotors, irons, housings), I got about 126lb. The oil pump + chain weigh about 4lb together. I'd say my 20lb-margin, saying it weighs 150lb in short block form, is plenty to include all seals, springs, gaskets, vaseline, etc.

I do not include full exhaust, because that is not the engine, and would not be swapping into a different car. That is..retarded.

Here's an interesting link even if it doesn't give us much in the way of answers.

Dressed is usually the engine including accessories (alternator, AC?, water pump, etc.) and all related belts and fluids.

From the pages of the Holy RX8 hardbound book, I quote as follows:

The rotors weigh 8.6 lbs each.

The RENESIS is 30 percent smaller than the twin turbo 13B-REW

I will continue to scour the book for more weights, and will post if I find anything else of interest.
