How Long To Start Your 8??

Have always wondered the start timing on peoples RX8's? I don't know exactly what a great start time is? Just wondering if my start times are good, because I see peoples videos of their car starting in 0.5-1 second range? My car takes
COLD-1.8-2.1 seconds to start
HOT-2-2.4 seconds, and starts everytime.

Is this normal, and what is yall starting times?

Im hoping not a new motor :/... Got new plugs/wires/coils 1k miles ago as well as a battery. Its a 2008 Automatic, 69k Miles, never got a new starter yet. Car has had oil changes every 3k miles, and premium gas in the tank ever since i can remember.

My 8 was doing the same thing! Took about 2 sec. to start. Just changed all the plugs/wires/and ignition coils, now starts like a dream! I would start with that first.

About 1 second, new BHR ignition set.
Get a rotary specific compression check to be sure, proceed from there.
It's not wise to start changing parts on a dying engine unless you know the parts are bad and you plan on rebuilding & keeping it.
In the meantime, you can clean your MAF & ESS, check battery connections, vacuum lines, 20 brake pedal stomp.
Don't cost nuthin.
If you are able, drop the cat if you have one & inspect it.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply guys.. Yeah i guess ima go ahead and get a compression test here within a couple weeks before i go buy a new starter or anything. I cleaned MAF sensor also. Ive always wondered what the compression was anyways, so might as well knock that out!

Tomorrow Im going to pickup some carb cleaner, and just give it a try to find a vacuum leak, since i do have code p0411 which one of the causes of this code is "vacuum leak", and my idle at stop lights is a but shaky. So ill see what happens!

Mine starts up right away.

There isn't a set duration or number of cranks that's indicative of compression loss, rather it's the difference between hot and cold starts that's key.

Also, the starter shouldn't be the problem; a healthy engine making good compression won't have any problems starting even with a slow starter. The upgraded starter is more of a "band aid" type fix for an engine with low(er) compression that helps mask the hot start symptom.

Yeah the "hot" start problem is a sign of low compression is what i understand. Mine starts the same for cold and hot, it just takes 2 seconds to start

Mine takes about 2 seconds sometimes more to start from cold, but less than 1 when hot. Ignition system is all healthy, do you think the battery could be going out? It's resting voltage is around 12.0V

I want to say at resting your volts should be measuring in the 12.4-12.6 range? 12.0 flat seems low? But im not 100% sure

resting voltage has nothing to do with crank current. take it to autozone and have it load tested.

BHR ignition and about 59,000 miles on my 05 Shinka with the upgraded starter and original engine. Usually starts instantly (less than a second) hot or cold. Occasionally, it takes a few extra cranks to start up... Usually an extra half a second or less, nothing really to worry about though; its been doing since around 29,000 miles. Last time my car has seen the track was around 50,000 miles with 5 sessions in 103 degree weather and never had a problem starting either on OEM ignition coils.

Here is my RX8 starting cold then hot.
I don't really know the history on the engine so I should do the plugs and leads etc the vehicle has done 147,000ks have owned it for 6 months now.

That difference makes sense. I never put a stopwatch to mine, but it takes about four compression strokes when cold, and two when hot. When it was new it took about two when cold, but slowed down after the 4206f flash which has the anti-flood delay.

Mazdadrags--
pretty much how mine starts, its not instant, but its not horribly long Still wondering what the problem would be.

04 8
132K Miles
Unknown Compression
2-2.5 seconds cold
2is when hot.

Starts quicker when hot. Very infrequent false starts when cold (starts but immediatly dies) never flooded (yet).

Suspect failing coils. Will report back once I have replaced coils and done a full tune-up.

Mine starts after 2-5 cranks. Well under 2 seconds in the worst case.

Resting voltage for a battery with nomparasitic amp draw and an up to spec charging system should be 12.6. The charged index for a battery at rest is surprisingly narrow. From what I have read but not confirmed in real life, 12.6 is 100% charge and 12.0 and below is near dead and/ or bad battery cell. Essentially, .1 volts at rest = approx 17%.

Just get some closure man. You can comp test your engine with a standard compression tester by taking out the schrader valve. This test will give you a very good picture of the health of our engine.

No one answered your post. I highly recommend you replace the coils, plugs and wires ASAP. Always replace all of them together. OEM coils are usually good for 30,000 miles tops, plugs may last up to 15,000 miles or more. But since you don't know your engine's history, change all three, coils, plugs and wires NOW. I bet you notice a dramatic difference right away. You can do the miles to kilometers conversion, but either way you are overdue. Excellent ignition health is critical to a rotary engine. Any failing part of your ignition system can cascade into engine or cat damage and/or failure.

Definitely get your battery load tested. My car was having the slow start symptoms before my recent battery change. Advance Auto verified the dead cell, and now the starts are nearly instantaneous. (I replaced plugs and wires very recently and the coils a year or so.).
