Had to push start my car 3 times before it could hold idle, bad sensor possible?

Unhooked the battery for 7 hours to change out my master cylinder, slave cylinder and dropped the tranny to change out the clutch. When I got it all together and hooked the battery up and started her, my RX-8 would not hold idle. Got it running and drove it to see if the ecu needed to adjust its parameters. Got to the light and threw the car into neutral and the rpms fell to 0. Had a little forward speed before I came to the light so I popped the clutch, the car came to life and I had to keep my foot on the gas pedal.

2nd time , driving and had to come to a 4 way stop , threw it into neutral , the rpms fell to 0 again. This time I was at a complete stop, so I got out and pushed the RX-8 through the intersection until I could get back in and pop the clutch again. Driving the RX-8 home now.

3rd time, get back on my street , driving to my driveway and put it into neutral to coast to see if the car idles , again the car dies again, but with enough forward speed I pop the clutch and the car comes to life, pull in my drive way , let off the gas in neutral and finally the car idles.

Anybody else go through this , and if so what could be the cause? My car started fine this morning in the garage with a normal idle, drove all the way to work through lights, 4 way stop signs ad the car is fine now. It idles at 750-850 rpm.

It will take a good couple of drive cycles to relearn the trims, that might be your issue.

First off, paimon.soror is correct.

But my question is... Why are you push starting it??? I mean, I understand if your car is already rolling.

A common problem is that when a clutch is replaced, folks sometimes bend a portion of the flywheel, which messes up the crank sensor reads. I'm not sure if this affects the ESS, but this is known to cause starting problems. Might wanna get it checked out

Oh, sorry. Carefully reading the original post, the issue isn't starting... ignore above comment.
