Huge hole is huge
I noticed when I went on an 8 hour drive, I used just about 0 oil. I didn't have to fill up there or back. Was pretty awesome.
But yeah, check fluids/tires/etc.

What in particular are you concerned about? Everyone is scared to go on "long trip" but they can't name specifically what it is that they are fearful about. Just name it and we'll see if it is a valid fear or not.
I'm worried that if I open the window on a long trip, a bird will fly through the window and kill me. That is not a valid fear, but at least I can put a name on it, something that all these fearful "long distance" driver are unable to do.

I second Old Rotor's recommendation to check the fluids and tire pressures. That's pretty much all I do before a long trip.
If you're worried about breaking down, bring a cell phone.

As for how the 8 will do on a long trip...who knows. Any car can break down at any time, and with an 8 you can't just take it to any garage. If you don't still have roadside assistance under the warranty, get AAA or something.
What does your girlfriend drive? It will take a lot of gas money to drive an 8 that far...

I did a 2800 mile trip in 5 days. Melbourne, FL to Orlando, FL to Knoxville, TN to Asheville, NC, to Raleigh, NC to Greenville, NC back to Raleigh, NC and then back down to Orlando, FL, and them Melbourne, FL.
I drove it hard (downshifting/flooring it going uphill, etc) and had zero problems, and the car even has a few mods.
I enjoyed the trip so much I'll probably do it again in April.

I just did a 8-9 hour drive also, used no oil also but it was at 600 miles when I started and a 09. You should be fine, I brought a little $100 air compresser/battery charger gadget I had just incase but didn't need it and things went smooth for me. Luckily the whole economy is falling apart speach should keep the gas prices from rising for absolutely no reason like after the hurricane. Have a safe trip and check all the basics on the car.

It's a modern, reliable, automobile. The typical fluid and air pressure checks. Perhaps a spare tire for some added peace of mind, but even a flat is a rare instance and you have the air pump and sealant kit. 'sides not a good idea to change yourself along crowded high speed highways these days. Better to call a tow truck/carrier.
You most likely won't need more oil; our rotaries don't burn an appreciable amount in that period. But then, easy to carry a spare quart.
Bottom line, you'll be fine.

Carrying a gas can may also be a good idea depending on whether you're going to be on really long stretches without a station, but Vancity down to Cali shouldn't have you out of range of gas for more than twenty minutes at a time.

There are multiple articles on the web showing how the Rx8 performed just fine to the 24 hour non-stop endurance tests around the track using production engine and transmission....

So if it can endure aggressive driving for extended periods of time, you should be fine with our extended trip. As others said, make sure you check your fluids, just like you would in any other car...
