DaRotary 09-24-2008 05:24 PM

btw it have 34000miles and its a 2004 gt.

Old Rotor 09-24-2008 05:45 PM

Have you done the 30K service? Check all the fluids and tires and pressure and bring a can of oil with you.

invasion08 09-24-2008 05:47 PM

You will be fine

CyberPitz 09-24-2008 06:05 PM

I noticed when I went on an 8 hour drive, I used just about 0 oil. I didn't have to fill up there or back. Was pretty awesome.

But yeah, check fluids/tires/etc.

invasion08 09-24-2008 06:08 PM

I always keep a qt of oil in my car

Ditto. I store mine in the little trunk door holder thingy in the back seat.

DaRotary 09-24-2008 06:24 PM

ya that thing is pretty cool but i am planning to mounting 2 10ich subs in there :p

What in particular are you concerned about? Everyone is scared to go on "long trip" but they can't name specifically what it is that they are fearful about. Just name it and we'll see if it is a valid fear or not.

I'm worried that if I open the window on a long trip, a bird will fly through the window and kill me. That is not a valid fear, but at least I can put a name on it, something that all these fearful "long distance" driver are unable to do.

DaRotary 09-24-2008 07:22 PM

that thing i fear is i dont want the car to just die on me and leave me stranded in the middle of no where..

ken-x8 09-24-2008 07:58 PM

I second Old Rotor's recommendation to check the fluids and tire pressures. That's pretty much all I do before a long trip.

If you're worried about breaking down, bring a cell phone.

Me too, also a funnel and paper towels. I got in the habit of always having a quart of oil when I had my '80 RX7. The 8 seems to burn much less oil though.

As for how the 8 will do on a long trip...who knows. Any car can break down at any time, and with an 8 you can't just take it to any garage. If you don't still have roadside assistance under the warranty, get AAA or something.

What does your girlfriend drive? It will take a lot of gas money to drive an 8 that far...

I did a 2800 mile trip in 5 days. Melbourne, FL to Orlando, FL to Knoxville, TN to Asheville, NC, to Raleigh, NC to Greenville, NC back to Raleigh, NC and then back down to Orlando, FL, and them Melbourne, FL.

I drove it hard (downshifting/flooring it going uphill, etc) and had zero problems, and the car even has a few mods.

I enjoyed the trip so much I'll probably do it again in April.

Wow. Assuming an average of 20 mpg, that's 140 gallons of gas. At $4 a gallon, that comes out to $560! I wish I could afford to drive my 8 like that :(

That is why you get a good car insurence and roadside assistance =) and make sure your insurence company pays for you a rental car! We have usaa. I love them!

I just did a 8-9 hour drive also, used no oil also but it was at 600 miles when I started and a 09. You should be fine, I brought a little $100 air compresser/battery charger gadget I had just incase but didn't need it and things went smooth for me. Luckily the whole economy is falling apart speach should keep the gas prices from rising for absolutely no reason like after the hurricane. Have a safe trip and check all the basics on the car.

titesilver8 09-25-2008 07:25 AM

i drove from wa. to dallas last spring about 26 hrs. i made it in 22 including getting stuck in a freak snow storm in new mexico. zero problems there and back. even went 140 ish with a newer vet. fun drive. look for those windy back roads if you can. their a blast. stay safe.

Huey52 09-25-2008 07:44 AM

It's a modern, reliable, automobile. The typical fluid and air pressure checks. Perhaps a spare tire for some added peace of mind, but even a flat is a rare instance and you have the air pump and sealant kit. 'sides not a good idea to change yourself along crowded high speed highways these days. Better to call a tow truck/carrier.

You most likely won't need more oil; our rotaries don't burn an appreciable amount in that period. But then, easy to carry a spare quart.

Bottom line, you'll be fine.

Speedbear 09-25-2008 08:00 AM

No, your car will explode at 11.5 hours. Everybody knows that.

post some pics of that.. i'd like to see it sounds pretty stealthy.

but on the trip you shouldnt have any problems besides gas money.

mikesol 09-25-2008 09:18 AM

Carrying a gas can may also be a good idea depending on whether you're going to be on really long stretches without a station, but Vancity down to Cali shouldn't have you out of range of gas for more than twenty minutes at a time.

puch96 09-25-2008 09:27 AM

There are multiple articles on the web showing how the Rx8 performed just fine to the 24 hour non-stop endurance tests around the track using production engine and transmission....
http://rxreviews.wordpress.com/2006/...ndurance-race/

So if it can endure aggressive driving for extended periods of time, you should be fine with our extended trip. As others said, make sure you check your fluids, just like you would in any other car...
