My owner's manual says to use 91 octane. I tried lower octane, and performance did suffer. As a result, I always buy at least 91. Currently, the station I go to has both 92 and 93, (besides 87 and 89), so I opt for the 92.

91 all the time, personal choice by experience, with the speed wich this engine is sparking, it will use less fuel to control the same explosion. better control = better response, less fuel = less carbon. not much but when you pass 100 000km, 0,5% can mean alot.
and I never gas at shell or petro-canada (in canada) or any station with additive in the fuel, says to clean your engine, but cleaning agents usually dry surfaces and again from my personal opinion, I want it to be lubed as much as possible.
to each is own, I put all my chances on my knowledge.

My replacement engine has seen only Premium.
I tried mid-grade (never regular though) a few times with the original engine. It eventually lost compression. Probably not related whatsoever, but still... this time around I'm taking no chances.

I suppose you are either one of two groups:
So looking at the poll, about 60%-70% of the people here are running premium and the rest are either running midgrade or regular.
I suppose that people who are running 87/89 octane are having no problems so far.
- You take no chances and you just add premium 90+ Octane
- You start with regular and if it creates problems you work your way up

I tried regular a few weeks ago. The car bucked when I went past about 30% throttle for the first few miles.
I put in premium after that. I used regular in my old RX-7 all the time, and the RX-8 was OK with it after it reset it's timing but obviously there was some advantage to running premium since the car had tuned itself well enough on premium to the point of bucking on regular. So I stay with premium.

No you won't, because the PCM will pull back the timing if it's detected. However, you may be leaving some horsies on the table. Try a tank of at least 91 octane. I'll bet you can feel the difference. I know i did.

i get away with regular on my 8 all the time...HOWEVER, i will say that i will only buy regular from one gas station down the road from me. i dont have problems with regular gas from them but ive had problems with regular from other stations... so when im close enough to home i fill up on regular (currently $3.27/gal at that station), but if im out somewhere i go only to gas stations ive been to before and only get premium. ive had no problems.
