They did just an oil change for mine. Plus they looked at all fluid levels. You can also mention any probs you have and they'll take a look at it for you

In the fall they had the deal where you could sell your car back to them or get a $500 debit card and free maintenance. When did you get your car?

Your qualifying periods may be controversial. On my previous Mazdas they said I was in a "driving stress" area so scheduled oil changes at 3,000 mile intervals. Now that Mazda is paying they claimed appropriate interval is 7,500. But it's negotiable. First service itself is just oil change and whatever quiet TSB stuff they have in mind, such as maybe a re-flash for something or other.

there are 2 schedules that can be followed on the rx-8. one has services starting at 5k and the other starts them at 7500. the customer chooses which one to use but you cannot switch back and forth. so you can't get a free service with oil change at 5k and then get another free oil chacge at 7500, it is not allowed.
at the first service they should change the oil, check all fluids, belts and hoses, rotate the tires and take care of any tsb work that your car qualifies for.

I just picked up the car and I got the oil change and they checked the fluids. That is it. The maintenance book does not specify the tire rotation. All the "dealer recommended" service items are not included. I guess something is better than nothing.

Tire rotation recommendation (at 7500) is in another part of the manual, not on the maint. schedule. I believe most dealers are including this, from what I've heard (haven't hit 7500 yet).
Supposedly, all hinges and locks are to be lubricated with every oil change. I can't really see that happening at most places, and I know they didn't at my first change.
