2012 rx-8
#4
FWIW, I have seen dozens of posts on here saying no 2012 RX-8, yet nobody seems to have a source when I have asked (in several different threads). I suggest you take any comments along these lines with a whole shaker of salt unless someone can provide any sources.
For reference, I have e-mail Mazda directly and they have not released any official statement on the 2012 RX-8.

There are several sources on this website about this story. You will have to search it and i believe, this is the last year that Mazda will sell the rx8. So sad, but true.

Well, I've searched several times myself, mostly because I really want to buy a new RX-8 and I really would like to wait until next spring due to finances and the fact that my current car really isn't in bad shape.
However, every time I find any reference to the 2012 RX-8 it is similar to the posts above. "Yup, last year for the RX-8" - no references, no sources. As far as I can tell it is something a lot of people on here have accepted, but nobody seems to know where the information originated.
I have also searched all over the web - repeatedly - and found no credible source willing to say this. Mazda themselves say that there has been no official statement (I e-mailed their NA press officer). And I've searched the major auto outlets - Road & Track, Car & Driver, Winding Road, etc. - and nobody seems to have the story. I even e-mailed the editors of several of the sites but got no responses.
So, bottom line for me is that I'm treating the demise of the RX-8 as a rumor until I can find some sort of corroborating evidence. I'm not looking necessarily for something official, but something from a reliable source would be nice.
That said, if you or anyone else could find the forum post that I'm missing, or an external link to something more substantial, I'd very much appreciate it. If this really is the last year of the RX-8 I need to adjust my plans appropriately and get out to my dealer.

I have a 2002!!! KINDAAA.
The Rx8 isn't going to be sold in the US anymore. It's not a rumor and it's everywhere on the web. It actually makes alot of sense due to emissions restrictions everywhere in the world being stricter. It's a shame since the s2 motors seem so great but what are you gonna do. The 8 has had an amazing run.

FWIW: Montgomery Mazda in Charlotte, NC has(had maybe) a 2011(new) Velocity Red on lot for like 5-6 months now. You can still buy a "new" RX-8 at some dealerships. Not 2012, but not used either.

I believe it all started with this Motor Trend article: http://wot.motortrend.com/writing-on...n-us-7572.html

Very true. I just don't want to get stuck settling for something that isn't exactly what I want. Actually, even if they make a 2012 I'm probably going to buy a 2011 next spring since I assume there will be some still on lots. The benefit of course would be that the dealer would have some incentives to make me a good deal, plus I'd have the 2012's as a backup just in case.

Now, if you can find something on the web that actually has some credibility (other than the one article already posted in this thread) I'd be interested in seeing a link.

I've seen that and others that probably were based on that. There are also some reports, cited in the media forum here, about the RX-8 being discontinued in Europe because of emission requirements.
This set me to wondering. How many manufacturers announce beforehand when they'll discontinue a particular model? GM pre-announced when Oldsmobile and Pontiac were going away, but not necessarily by a whole lot. They announced Olds would be gone only four or five months before the last was produced, and two days after they unveiled a new model.
Anyone remember how much lead time was there for DeSoto? Studebaker? Nash? Pontiac Fiero?
Anyway, we'll find out for sure in September, when new car announcements are made.

Umm...the fact that it is "everywhere on the web" doesn't make it a fact. If I believed everything I saw on forums I'd be in my basement wrapping myself in tinfoil so the U.N. and alien invaders couldn't scan my brain waves.

But if you look at all the signs (the articles, dismal sales, increasing CAFE standards, etc.), they all point to the end of the line for this RX.

The thing is... You aren't going to find an official announcement yet. It just isn't in Mazda's best interest to announce the end of a production run, as it will accomplish nothing but hurt their current sales.
