Thinking about buying a Lancer Evo VIII

I'm thinking about selling the RX8 and buying a Lancer Evolution VIII. I am starting to get tired of taking it to the dealer to get small things on the car replaced or fixed. I just can't picture myself keeping the car past the warranty. I don't want to have to sink **** loads of money into the car for broken parts. It also lacks power and torque, as everyone here already knows.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the RX8 for its looks and handling, but it stops there. The gas milage doesn't bother me, but it still puts a dent in my wallet. I still may decide to keep the RX8 and maybe upgrade to a better package.

I don't know a whole lot about the Evo, but I'm sure there are plenty of threads about it here. I am interested in the car because it both looks good and has lots of HP. I've also always loved the sound of a turbo charger. The AWD is a real plus too. I can drive it in the snow during winter, unlike the RX8. I am also thinking about the Subaru WRX STi, but they seem to be a little more pricey than the Evo and they don't look as good IMO.

I found a 2005 Evo VIII for $20,000. Does that sound a little cheap to you guy's?It's been modded so I'm sure the warranty is void. It'll probably be gone before I get the chance to sell the 8. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find another one.

I don't think it looks too good. No way it will turn as many heads as the 8 does. Do a search their are plenty of threads on Evo's. They are just a $13k Lancer with a couple of ricer mods if you ask me because when some average person sees that driving down the road... they don't think you paid what you did for it. Sure, you will know and you will have the satisfaction yadda yadda yadda, but I still would like to be driving a car that people think I paid more than what I did for the car rather than the other way around.

20k for a '05 seems a little fishy... I absolutely love my Evo but if you're looking for a car to not sink a lot of money into the Evo is not it. Even if it ends up being totally reliable you won't be able to reisist dropping money on mods. This car is absolutely incredible though, at times I'm bothered by the stiff ride, but that's about my only compalin, and when I hit a twisty bit of road I just giggle with glee about what an amazing car this is. Like to go fast in a straight line, this car does that just as well as the twisty bit, I made some redneck in a WS6 look silly today and I didn't even have to break the speed limit.

If you're looking for a model of reliability and low cost maintenance the Evo is not it, bit if uyou want the most fun car for under 50k go get yourself an Evo.

You don't have the slightest clue what you're talking about. I get ridiculous amounts of attention in my Evo, to the point that I'm almost irritated. My girlfiend/fiance can't even believe it, she hates the car but can't believe how many people drool over it and often waves to people giving thumbs up and drooling over it when I don't notice them. But hey, whatever makes you feel better...

Yeah, $20,000 for a 2005 VIII sounds too cheap. I think I'll stay away from that one. It's probably wrecked or is having major engine problems. I noticed that the seller didn't take any photos of the rear.

The main things attacting me to this car is the horsepower, torque, and AWD. I seen one the other night and the engine sound it made when the driver punched the gas pedal was awesome. I just don't know if I want to spend a large amount of money on one. I'm going to be watching for a good buy on the web. If I find one I may scoop it up.

As I said earlier, I may just upgrade to a better package on the 8. I got the sport package right now witch kinda sucks. You just can't beat the price of the RX8, they're the best buy on the market IMO.

I can't really think of any other low priced sports cars out there that I may want. Any ideas?

The RX-8 turns heads by staying still, the EVO turns heads when it passes them.

born2drive: Go get the EVO already, honestly it smokes the 8 almost every way.

I'd really love to have an Evo if I could justify it as a daily driver. It just doesn't have enough creature comforts for me. If you're okay with the harsh ride and crappy interior on an everyday basis, then go for it. I spend too much time inside the interior to not have a bit of luxury and a decent ride. I think it would be an absolute blast if I could afford one as a weekend race track bomber, but I can't, so I'll make some performance sacrifices to make the day to day ho-hum driving a bit better.

Like these guys already told you, the Evo isn't cheap to maintain. It's a reliable car (25k modded miles w/no problems) but it's consumable parts (brake pads, clutch, tires, etc) are somewhat expensive to replace. My '05 VIII is already on it's 2nd set of tires ($800) and 2nd set of front brake pads ($180). I'm sure the clutch isn't far off because of the extra power I've added.

Am I complaining? No. It's worth it. I see guys my age driving around Honda Accords, Nissan Altimas, Ford Explorers and VW Jettas and I think, DAYUM how the hell do you get up in the morning. Being an old fart in your 20's or 30's is hazardous to your mental health. I would be miserable if I had to drive a car like that. With the Evo (even stock) you'll get big power and unbelievable handling. The handling, more so than anything else, still blows me away. I've got the horsepower up to about 300whp but, besides a stiffer rear sway bar, the stockish handling is the most entertaining part. You'll do things in the twisties at 50% that other so called "performance" cars will need to be pushed in order to do. I'm not embarrased to say that the Evo's handling > me. I still haven't pushed it as far as it will go.

OK Ike. Which one is it? Is she your GF or fiance? Because if you accidentally call her your GF in front of somebody after you're engaged it will really **** her off. Ask me how I know. And, on the other hand, if you call her your fiance in front of somebody before you've proposed it might freak her the hell out.

If your gong to get an Evo, wait till you find an MR. Its going to cost you a little more but its worth the extra few grand (6sp, better suspension). Expect to pay a little under 30. Is it better than the 8? I dont think so. But if you need a quicker jump off the line, than yes. But I would have to agree with what most others said. The cheap interior and ruff ride would never make me want one unless it was a weekend car and not my daily driver.

So very wrong, try building a EVO out of a normal lancer and you will find they are so different.

~Ike I totally agree.. I get more points and stares with my 06 STI then I did with my rx8. I feel like the hype of the rx8 is over, so it started to get over looked. I can't tell you how many times people have come up to talk to me about my car. Love or hate the looks, people will always respect a car for its performance. And if they don't, you just make them look stupid as they become a speck in your rear view mirror.

I found the points and stares to be mixed. The Sti always gets more attention from the younger crowd, which at times is annoying, since they pace you on highway, or try and race. The RX8 hits more of a wide age variety, and the compliments were abundant on looks. I haven't gotten a single comment on looks about my STI, except the questions of "why the wing"? ,Everyone that approaches me talks about the performance, which is what the car is. I got an rx8 very early on, before people truly knew what it was, and that thing almost stopped traffic. Eventually they were everywhere, and I lost my glory of being unique. I believe the new STI has much hotter looks, and gets more recognized then my 04. I tell ya though, so far, nothing has compared to the stares I got in my yellow 01 S2000, and currently get in my yellow 06 S2K. It's all about the color really. The stares from women are what separates this car and the RX8 from STI for me. The stares I get in STI are more from people who know what it is, and what kind of power it has. Normally the demographic for the stares and compiments comes from a much younger generation. The looks of the EVO and STI match well for today's youth, who have yet to know what refinement is.

If you are concerned about reliability, then why would you consider a used and modded Evo? Some flaws in your thinking here.

Who starest at an S2000? They've been around for years. And claiming that its all women??? keep dreaming. the only women that stare at cars in general, are hood rats.
