My friend ruined this car for me

Not sure where to post this but this seemed like the most appropriate forum since it does include a discussion about my rx8.

I went out to visit a good friend and got to drive his car and now I feel like I am standing still when accelerating in mine. It is still fun to drive around corners and still has power but just feels gutted now. I normally enjoy my ride to work but today it just didn't have that 'magic' that I usually feel when I get in my car. I drove this car for 3 days and put almost 100 miles on it just driving around and enjoying it.

What good is this thread without pictures of the car? No good at all.

It has 325 rwhp, stock twin turbos, power fc, defi gauges, upgraded intercooler, pretty damn low(makes my car feel like a truck), recaro confetti seats and more that I can't think of or just don't know. The pictures really do not do this car justice, it is so beautiful in person.

Also, does anyone by any chance know what front bumper this has? I would post at the rx7club forums but I don't have enough post count yet.

beautiful car...don't know how it could ruin your RX-8 love. These are two different classes of cars. The 3rd Gen RX7 was a true gem of sports cars, especially when modded the right way.

Just need to look at it in the right light. You have a moderate sports car that accelerates good and twists and turns with elegance. The Twin Turbo FDs are more of a pure sports car.

Drop $10K into your engine and powertrain and you get it pretty damn close.

I had the reverse reaction, though I will probably be in the minority here. Test driving a single turbo FD (albeit one with a too large turbo with long spooling time and lots of lag) and a stock twin turbo FD I won't ever buy one. Beautiful cars, and undeniably fast, but as a package, the RX-8 is the more appealing car. More responsive in engine and chassis, better chassis all around, more refined, more reliable, easier to work on, etc...

Nice FD. I'm not sure which bumper that is. But comparing a heavily modded FD to a stock RX-8 is no fair.

I agree with what has been said. It sounds more like you have caught the modding bug to me. The Rx8 just happens to be a car where you need to invest a lump of money upfront to increase power. You could still get more aggressive seats, gauges, and other things to spice up your drive.

Go buy some Motons, APR GT wing, a front splitter, R3 sway bars, get the car corner balanced, and hit the track. You will forget about the FD.

Words of wisdom right here. I was on a pursuit for huge power gains(still am, just no rush now) but AUTOX and track days have become an addiction. seriously the most fun you can have with this car.

I feel your pain.

My co-worker's 7. Around 480WHP during this pic and needing a tune, and this was about two tunes ago. He's closer to 600 now, I think.

Makes my un-lowered 8 feel like an SUV. Then again, I don't want to drive a car that makes me go 5MPH over speed bumps (been there, done that).

i agree, the FD's are really nice in theory, but when you own one (i had a yellow one from 1999-2002), you realize they look great, can be quiet, smooth, and really fast, but on the other hand are incredibly boring, fragile, and not very good as a daily driver.

so its neat, but just as a car, the Rx8 is better.

for the resume list, i've had an R100, NSU wankel spider, 20ish 1st gens, about 10-12 FC's, 3 Rx8's (in a year), a couple of miatas, but only 1 FD.

I know they are two different cars. The rx8 is a great car for daily driving and that FD is not a very good daily driver with everything that is done to it. MY car still feels good taking corners and I know it does that very well. It is just going from 3 days in a hard accelerating car that still handled very well back to this was almost a let down. It was also that this was the first FD I ever drove and I have wanted to drive one for a very long time. I guess driving it just really 'put my car in its place' if that makes any sense. I'm sure I will get back to enjoying driving it eventually but right now I am still thinking of the FD.

I could also sell my car and buy that FD and have a better investment imo, he doesn't want much for it if he sold it to me. If I could have sold my car quick I could have bought this FD for 12-14k which is an extremely good price imo. Before I drove it I was already in the process of selling my rx8 to possibly buy that FD. I am still trying to sell it and an FD is somewhere in my future, but at this time even the rx8 is more maintenance than I need in a daily driver(I know the FD would be worse.) I will buy one at a later date but I just need to have more disposable money first.

At some point I would love a car like this that had 320ish hp. This one had the perfect amount of hp to leave it driveable on the street without issue and still be fast. It was kind of a pain in the *** to drive it around but that is what made the car more fun, as a weekend car anyway.

FD is great car but if you don't have cash game is over.

Why don't you fully tune your 8 ? Maybe you will start to tune sc & exterior etc. I don't understand why a clever person buy an old car ? Do you want to solve the problems ?

it is just that for the amount of money I'd have to drop on this car to get that owe it's not worth it. I don't want to turn this into a power discussion though as I knew what I was buying at the time and it has been a great car and I still love it for the handling and I know it's not really slow it just feels slow after driving the FD. my car did feel better to drive today though I think it was just going from the FD directly to my car the first day.

I'm not knocking the rx8s handling by any means, when I compared it to a truck I just meant the height. it still handles amazingly.

money isn't really the issue as I could buy that FD for less than I paid for this car. I know it is older and has more maintenance than my Rx8. part of the charm of that car and even the rx8 is that it is special and take extra care to keep it in good condition.

what made this FD extra special to me was that it was not a rhd conversion this was a legit jdm car. not many people get the chance to drive one of these inside the US and it is probably the nicest car I will ever have the privilege of driving around.

I'm with RIWWP. I had high expectations for FD's, but I was left a little disenchanted when I drove one that was nearly OEM.

tomorrow I am going to try and get a ride in an OEM one and see how it feels. it just depends who shows up to the meet here but I'm hoping one of the people with a stock FD comes. I'm very interested to see how it performs stock.

I own both a 7 and an 8. They are both totally different cars.

When I want to just drive somewhere I take the 8. It has way more space, better seats, adjustable steering wheel, and many many more things. I can bring my wife along with me in the 8 and i wont get one complaint other then the music that i'm listening to.

When I want to go fast and get a bunch of looks in general I will pull out the 7.

Which car do I enjoy better overall the 7 because it was my dream car. Which do I drive more the 8 and its not very far behind the 7.

Attention like **** magnet? No offense at all, but having driven a clean FD a number of times, I have noticed that ***** are attracted to cars of its era. That includes the Supra and NSX.

It does attract a lot of car guys over to check it out but I don't see the problem with that. Some of them are idiots and others not but that is just life in general. Even in my rx8 the few compliments I have ever received about the car are from guys.

Find it quite the opposite to the FD as I usually get compliments from women in my 8, and often get frowned upon by guys. Though that is expected with many modern vs nostalgic cars of similar roots.

To almost every girl:
An FD is a Miata coupe
An NSX some just a Honda
A Supra is an old Toyota with a wing
A 240z is grandpa's jap crap
An actual Skyline is a Nissan Sentra Coupe

To every guy, the opposite. Including me, because I would wet my boxers at every sight of an FD.

no offence taken it does not matter to me if its guys or girls. Ive been driving with the 7 and a girl pulls up next to me and is just in love with my 7 and after talking to the girl at the light my wife tells me she hates the car haha. I've had guys pull up next to me and ask if i wanna sell it or tell me nice viper or just know what the car is and give me props.
