20b rx8

Well I decided to totally do away with the factory WP housing which required a change to the alternator bracket location.
I will for the time being chop out 2/3s of the housing and leave just enough to mount the alt. I will also find a shorter belt to keep the alt as low as possible. At a later stage I will cut the bracket shorter n weld it together to get the alt even lower.
Turned the crank wheel to the correct position and re drilled one hole on the pulley for alt to make it line up seeing as it is the rx8 one and I reversed it.
Can anyone tell me- will the rx8 crank wheel be in the correct position on a 20b engine with all 4 holes lined up?

Guess i better replace all the bushes while I'm at it. Noticed one is damaged, possibly more. See pic. Decided to clean up a bit. Grinding the rest of that radiator support off and removing the abs n grinding off the protruding piece under. Tidied up my hack into the sill. Installed subframe n crossmember. Trial fit engine again. Oh yeh, couldn't bolt on the rack completely cos someone made a boo boo on their extension. Luckily it was an easy fix Discovered the 4th manifold clearance issue-steer rod clash. Grrr. I was gonna modify this manifold but I think it would be better to fab a newbie with the help of my welder friend in bris- acacia customs. (Thanks Andy for the subframe weld). Also lashed out n bought an xtreme rotaries ewp adaptor, these things are of amazing quality n design. I searched for the last 6months n couldn't find one better. It is expensive tho.

What I removed pic 1 What is left pic 2 So as to retain the original mounting points for alt. I have about 60mm between belt and ewp adaptor so I'm gonna need very low profile elbow connectors.

Rotor shaped Alternator pulley. I'll put this on my st car tho as I need a under drive pulley for belt clearance if the ewp adaptor
Xtreme rotaries oil bypass plate
Coil packs mounted on what I think is the best position.
Oil filler will need a tiny mod for clearance.

Trimmed the water pump some more. Trying to make it look interesting as well as lighter.
Trimmed n painted the alt bracket too.
Trying out plastidip on my blue car. These rims had gold spoke before tonight. I'll take pics tomoz when I put em back on.

i really want those wheels. Put them on every rx7 I build in video games. ADVAN SA3R mmmmm

Received the larger pulley from xtreme. Certainly gained me some extra clearance for the ewp adaptor. Will see how it goes with the 45degree an20 fittings when they arrive. If it doesn't clear I may swap the an20s for an16 to gain some room.
I think the an20s are a waste anyway seeing as most ewp's are an16.

Not sure if its been discussed but why not relocate the alt to the ps or a/c compressor location.

Considering a 20b in my st car also, so I want to see if I can keep the AC etc, at least at the start. Once it's on the track ill remove the ac again.

Gonna be using one of these bad boys now too.
Liquid to air- barrel intercooler. Will run along the side from the TB 90degree to the front 90degree.
Will save a lot of space and also produce less lag.
Yeehaww
Ouch their expensive tho.
Gotta squeeze in that BOV between TB n barrel too.

Umm, is this too big!??
I got this brand new excavator intercooler very cheap. I probably won't use it, at least till I see how the barrel cooler handles the job, but it was fun working on how it may fit.

rev it up
From what I hear, the barrel intercoolers are great for short runs such as drags as they are water cooled and will eventually heat soak.
Air cooling is usually used on road cars and for track use. A vee mount will give you the best result.

That excavator intercooler looks way too big to use. Ideally you'll want to do a V-mount setup.
Water to air intercoolers are really only good for drag cars or short use time attack cars and need an ice tank to work really good. The ones that just use another radiator for shedding its heat, I've never seen work that great. It's adding another complicated system that costs a decent amount of money to the car when you could just do a good air to air intercooler and be done with it.
I put a lot of thought into maybe using that same barrel one you're looking at, but after doing research and talking to people with first hand experience, I decided against it. You will not notice a response difference if you have a good v-mount with short piping runs.

Cool, thanks for the input guys. I'll take it on board
We may actually cut that big cooler down yet.. Will use it for testing till we get it right..
Seeing as I already purchased the barrel style also then I'll be using it to trial and testing etc. I actually decided against the pwr unit for the sheer expense, tho I'm sure it does what it claims. I found a cheaper alternative which I'll post pics of once it arrives.
It's sometimes fun to try stuff for yourself.

Interesting fact I discovered for myself today- calculated the surface area of the 20b TB butterflies VS the rx8 TB, the 20b is only 1/6 bigger!!
So for the work involved in switching to a cable system it hardly seems worth it, especially considering that I wanna keep the drive train stock for as long as possible.
Farther down the track I see me upgrading to an aftermarket TB anyway, but not till I'm ready to break shiz.
1/6th, crazy huh! It just looks way bigger cos it's outside dimensions, but in actual fact even the rx8 intake pipes have larger diameter too the the stock 20b.
Not a great deal to report at this moment, just waiting on parts to arrive.
Setrab oil cooler std172. 72row shld be here this week.
gonna cut the massive intercooler down to a total core length of 640mm plus tanks, I think the height is 400mm and the thickness is 100mm.
Also the water air barrel style will come to. Will run some tests to see which cooling system is best whilst sideways for 5min at a time, monitoring air temp and boost lag etc between the two.
Still haven't decided on a radiator yet so if ya can all throw a suggestion or two my way?..? I'm thinking a rx7 s6-8 / 3core aluminium shld suffice, anyone wanna quote a reputable brand, maybe without the pwr price tag.. I'd love to use pwr for the whole kit- water, oil and intercooler but I am not that rich.

Still waiting on barrel cooler and oil cooler and a bunch oh dash an fittings.
I did pick up these gems today tho
I also bought the xtreme rotaries alt relocation/ after all the work of chopping up the 20b WP to retain the factory alt position too lol!! It was more to see if it could be done- I proved it could but now I wanna free up the space above the front of motor. Uncluttered and keeping the weight lower.

Didn't have much time today, but did a quick fit of the bracket. Very happy
And my new coffee cup coaster. The beginnings of my new manifold. Bought a welder, gonna have a crack at making it.
