What I think of this car – plus a newbie’s guide to the rest of you b*stards

Hi all,

Firstly, what I really love about the RX8 is that in an age of increasingly identical offerings it dares to be different. I love the rotary engine, the suicide doors, the great styling, the excellent handling, etc. but most of all I love its unflagging ability to make me smile. I forgive it any faults it may have, and the recalls it has experienced. All the things and people that I truly love have flaws. And the same applies to some of you fellow posters.

So now for the people:

(First a disclaimer: the family are in bed and I have just polished off the last of an excellent bottle of red, so I am in a somewhat “wordy mood” (What!” says Revolver – “you have non-verbose moods too!”)

Hymee:

One word – RESPECT. Not only does Hymee perform the thankless task of moderating all this drivel (can you imagine how much of his time that wastes??) he is one of the very few people here with REAL technical knowledge, experience, and skills, as opposed to half-arsed opinions.

Lock & Load:

I would probably disagree with heaps of what he does but I just can’t help loving the man. He does exactly what he wants, and then he stands by it in the face of criticism, scorn, disagreement and all manner of crap. Don’t underestimate this man, he’s a lot smarter and much more of a force than the casual observer might think.

Taka:

Another enthusiastic poster with great energy, a good slab of experience, and a very good brain. He has the great asset that he is prepared to learn from what is said and done, and not stay in a rut and merely use every opportunity to just push his views. A real talent who has every right to his more showy moments and whose knowledge keeps increasing at a rapid rate.

I’d like to think that I share Taka’s ability to learn from what’s said. Everything I’ve learned over the years came from not knowing something and being told, or from being wrong and having it pointed out. I’m still learning, and I’m still wrong. When I genuinely am wrong, and I learn something, I feel it’s a gain not a loss

A very great violinist was once asked why he still practised – in his eighties. He replied “I find that I am still learning things”. Amen to that.

Timbo:

Another staunch poster who occasionally pisses us off by darting out, poking us with a stick and darting back behind his shield again. Again, underestimate this man at your peril. He may have some slightly fusty characteristics but he has a very good brain and an enviable repertoire of tactical skills when things get sticky. Loves precision, accuracy and careful consideration. Anybody who can post with pride than two of his sons got such superb results in their exams is not only a smart guy who knows how to put the real work in where in counts – his heart is also in the right place.

Gomez:

I loved the TV Gomez, and this man picked his nickname well. Great sense of humour. VERY sharp mind for everything that’s said – so pick your words with care. Technically good and always worth reading. Dogged (see current avatar), funny, but an absolute killer if he chooses to be (which fortunately for the rest us bozos isn’t often).

Labrat:

I’m an absolute sucker for really bright, somewhat geeky people who don’t always take themselves too seriously. If the yardstick was sheer brain power the Labrat could probably out-accelerate us all with ease, as long as he chose the track. May possibly have trouble tying own shoelaces but awesomely, quirkily, and delightfully smart. Read and enjoy.

Revolver:

Recently admitted to being a lawyer – so watch your step. Likes to be right, but (alas)often is. Also likes to stir the pot and lightly take the p*ss. Saving grace – can usually take as well as give. One to watch as he builds up his knowledge database on the car.

Xxup:

Posts short, excellent posts. Sometimes overlooked because his posts don’t attract controversy and he doesn’t seem to look for stoushes. Funny and perceptive, and one of those people who help glue a forum together. Would be a real loss if he disappeared.

AMG:

Dentist, investor, and owner of several cars. Enjoys visiting for a quick chat and a jab at the punters. Often entertaining and knows his cars. If he took his gloves off he could inflict a serious whack so try not to p*ss him off too much.

RXP33D:

Wonderful guy. Great humour and opinions (i.e he supported me recently on something) :D

EZZY:

Another guy who has genuine expertise in certain areas. When he does post stuff it’s well worth a read.

BVD:

Grumpy old fart who thinks his past experience is still relevant, and who labours under the delusion that some of his offerings are funny. Somewhat out of step with 2005, but not yet completely dead between the ears. :p

Apologies to Rotarenvy, NicoRx8, Bat1, nojooc, and all the many, many others not mentioned above who post here., and who in my fuddled and demented state I’ve overlooked or not expounded on.

Despite the fact that some of you occasionally cheese me off – in the immortal words of Australia’s very own poet and philosopher, Jeff Fenech, - “I love youse all”!

Now where’s that coffee…..

Of course! My bad.

I especially love guy321, in spite of his apparent desire that certain people take their clothes off. He's cool.

I lived in the USA for 8 months and loved it. I even lost my virginity there (so if you've seen it, please send it back..)

And please don't put my ravings in quotes like that..... :o

Now where's that cofee...

Hey BVD, great post!

You should drink red more often! :D

Somewhat embarassed to be included in the list at all given the short time I've been here compared to the old hands but thanks all the same. Hmmm, what's that old adage about the squeaky wheel again... :p :D

However, I'll never have the knowledge of the tech heads here. I still struggle to make sense of tyre placards!! :o

And can we all just forget what I do!! I really prefer to lose the scarlet letter when not wearing the wig and gown. :o

Thanks BVD,

You could have said "Taka is a young lad who just likes to mouth off" or more medically "his speech comes directly from the Broca's area without processing in the high cortex".

Good morning BVD,

How's the hangover?

There's a nice wee coffee shop at Burns Beach that's quiet and offers a good brew! :p

...ummm..

...cough...

...did I really write all that stuff last night? :o Sorry folks, I hope nobody was offended...

Amazingly, there is no hangover today though.

My theory is that I destroyed the last two remaining brains cells, and am now existing in a serene state of complete emptiness between the ears.

OMMMMMMM......

Wow you can almost "feel the love"
(can sense L'n'L double entendre warming up too).

Some nice points, and possibly an all time high score for diplomacy whilst under the influence....a job a DFAT awaits!

Moving swiftly on - it is not avisable to drink red whilst sitting in a Shinka - Gomez will provide profuse list of reasons why and one of them may even relate to removing red stains from tan leather. :p

Gee, I don't know whether I can live up to all of this: geeky, quirky, can't tie my shoelaces (actually I can, but often to the other shoe).

Actually.....I'm all for Shinka drivers drinking while driving. Should be bloody well mandatory, I reckon .

Well, after a good night's sleep and some reflection...I'm going to revise my opinion of BVD.

I think he is trying to blind us with compliments -- an old strategy, and one that works....but NOT FOR LONG.

See, I reckon he's....he's....a....PIKER! oops, sorry, I meant (and I know he's of the generation to whom this is a slap in the face )

He sits around drinking red wine, talking about cars, music (probably women, too ) --giving all the appearance of a great general raconteur, good times guy and great company.

What's more, he's so secure in his relationship that his wife offers him a leave pass, and suggests he puts his car on the train....and also visits his brother.......

But will he come and chew the fat with us Wakefield, and give us the benefit of what seems to be such great company. NO HE WON'T!!! PIKER, I say....PIKER!!

I know all about these internet forums

I'm betting BVD is not actually as he seems....but really a fat, spotty adolescent who doesn't even have a driver's licence :D :D :p

(ooh, I am feeling fusty this morning -- where's a post from Lock & Load ? )

Nonsense - I'm a Nepalese goat herder, and in peak condition... :p

"fat" .... cough.. cough.... well I like to think of it as "slenderness challenged"... but yes, I am getting a litle pear shaped in my dotage. Or "anecdotage" as I like to call it.

So here's an anecdote about my driver's licence:

I have a WA "Heavy Vehicle Driver's Licence" with class R (any motor cycle) and class HC (Any motor vehicle with one trailer over 9t ).

I got the truck part of the licence in Western Queensland in the 70s.

Although I worked for a truck company I'd never got round to getting a truck licence. One day I was about to do a trip as co-driver for one of our dealers. We went out to a station near the the Birdsville track and picked up some of the worst cattle I've ever seen in my life. The trip and its outcomes is in itself quite a lengthy story.... :D

But, before we left, Col said "maybe we'd better get you a licence first". We drove to the cop shop and went in:

Col: Hi Phil (or whoever) Chris needs a truck licence.

Phil: OK Col. (gets out licence and puts it in typewriter and begins pecking away. Amost as as afterthough he looks up...) Can he drive Col?

Col: Of course he bloody well can!

Phil: OK. Got your truck here Col, we'd better do the formalities.

Col: Yep.

So out we go and jump into the ACCO. We drive about fifty feet and and the copper says:

Phil: OK that'll do, just swing round in a big circle here (there were empty blocks on both sides of the road) and park in front of the station.

So because I did about 100 meters or so in a truck in W.Qld over 30 years ago, in about second gear, I'm still licenced to drive heavy vehicles. Haven't done so for years though. :D

Scary eh!

Well not really, I did end up quite a reasonable driver, and wouldn't drive a bigger rig again without some refresher work first.

P.S.
Thanks for the kind words and the jokes Timbo. :o

Reminds me of my own driving test...brought up on a farm in NW NSW...nearest town 60ks from the farm.

Went into the local police station on the appropriate day...my 17th.. with my father

Police Sergeant say: Hello Tim, what can we do for you?
Me: I'd like to get my driver's licence, please
PS: No problems. How long have you been driving for ?
Me: Well, I've had my L plates for the statutory 3 months.
PS: No...looks at father...how long has he really been driving for?
Father: Around the farm, since he was 7 or 8...he's not done too much on public roads though...only when we've been short of drivers...at harvest and so-on.
PS: Right, thought so...ok...better do a quick test.
(out to car, I hop in , PS hops in, just sits there, but I notice no seatbelt, and they'd just become compulsory)
Me: Could you please put your seatbelt on?
PS: No way, how am I gonna get out if you get out of control? Drive on!
So I proceeded to drive around the block -- 3 left turns, 200m, 60sec -- not another car in sight, pull up outside police station, in we go, PS types up licence....and that was it

No wonder the first time I drove in Melbourne with hook turns, I almost shat myself

LOL :D

Ah, the "good old days"...

Gotta love the country life. I was brought up on a farm too, and had also been driving for years when I took my test.

Which I FAILED!!! :D Too cocky I expect. I certainly knew how to control a car, but they were going through a "give the young male first timers a hard time" phase and I was failed on some technical point.

At that time the local town examiners went through a period of failing just about every young bloke first time, and it probably took a bit of wind out of our sails and made us concentrate on the rules a bit more.

Didn't do me any harm anyway. In my younger days I lost four or five friends to motorbike crashes (one friend died wearing my helmet), and a similar number to car crashes over the years, many of them young. So a brief hiatus to my hooning ambitions wasn't that bad a thing.

I wasn't that bad a hoon, but I am one of the few people ever to spin a combine harvester (header). We had some land next to an old airfield, so I couldn't resist doing a speed test on one of the runways. Headers had split brakes (one for each big drive wheel) so at full throttle I stamped on ONE SIDE ONLY.

It reared up like a Tyrannosaurus and did a nice 180 spin with its back wheels in the air. Huge crash when the back wheels hit the ground again, and a generous pile of chaff and straw fell out the back!!

Hahaha!! Great anecdotes guys! :D :D

Particularly love the combine harvester one. If you'd done it these days there would have been a mate with a digital video camera and we all could have enjoyed it!

Know what you mean about fail the male first time. Although not as 'vintage' as you blokes, my local RTA also had one of these guys - failed every mate of mine first go (and sometimes 2nd and 3rd as well!!). However, there was another laid back dude who was probably indirectly responsible for some bad accidents - he passed absolutely everyone! Always wondered how these 2 got along in the tearoom. :D

Anyways, of course I got the hardass 1st up.

I learnt to drive in a manual (like everyone should!!!!!) and he made me do a hill start on the steepest hill in the area - like bloody Mt Everest it was. Could almost smell the clutch burning.

Then he made me do a reverse park in a tiny space between a parked cement mixer and a bus (this is fair dinkum) - of course he tut tutted over the distance from the kerb I ended up while yours truly was trying to unwind his arms from the contortions I got into from trying to get my little galant around something that big.

The coup de grace was making me change lanes about 5 times while going down the 'big dipper' (another local landmark). Of course, I was so busy trying not to hit anything that I lost track of my speed and at the bottom he just leaned over, saw that I was going all of 5 kms over the limit and then just hurrumphed to himself, made a dirty great mark on his clipboard and told me to take him back to the Registry - yep, failed.

To cut a long story short, got the laid back dude next. Hill start on a barely discernible slope, reverse park behind a mini and I don't think we got out of the street behind the registry let alone going through roundabouts or changing lanes.

Funny how you never forget your driving tests isn't it?
