Last night I was out driving around and I accidentally ground my gears REALLY bad trying to go into second... I don't want to get into how it happened. For the next twenty minutes I couldn't even get it into first gear and barely into second... I was told I chipped my synchros and driving it around would wear them back into the original shape... I've been driving around and it's getting better however the shifting just still doesn't feel normal. Should I give it more time? should I take it into the dealer? and If I do will that be covered by my warranty?

Double cluch the car the first few times from 1st to 2nd. From there on should have no problems. Good Luck.

3 or 4 people told me driving around would make it better. I'm located in half moon bay about 20 miles south of San Fransisco. Build Date is early 05 I think.... It's an 05 model year.

the build date is on you drivers side pass door... would me asking for a vin # make it easier????

my vin is JM1FE173450149858. And no they weren't random people that told me this, they were people I knew that knew something about cars that I asked what the problem was.

relax... from now on make sure that the clutch is to the floor before you try to bang second gear...

if it grinds between first and second, yes take in in...

is you car under warranty???? the vin says it is....

your ? is silly... if you have had two other cars... you should know that...

if you can duplicate the sound or grind to the dealer you have nothing to worry about...

Searched and saw some people talking about tranny problems and bent fork related to 1-2 shifts, but nothing terribly specific.

My build date is 6/03 and that seems to put me in just about every problem catagory that's occured yet, but, I've been very lucky - no problems whatever - so far....

Just wanna know what to keep a look out for.

When you do a bad "gear grind", you're not grinding the gears and possibly not the synchros. What are clashing are the "dogs" and "slots" -- these are what engage to determine which gears are transmitting the torque. The actual gears in your gearbox are fully engaged, all the time. And the synchros help get the speeds of the selected gears closely matched so the dogs and slots can engage. So if you get a really bad grind, the synchros haven't really had a chance to do their job. The dogs and slots are fairly beefy features, but they can be damaged. They make a terrible racket any time they clash, so most people back off before there's serious damage. It's possible for a slight bit of damage to them to "get better" by driving, if there are burrs that get pushed off and find their way to the bottom of the case. You may see them next time you change your tranny oil. In severe or repeated cases, the ends of the dogs can "mushroom", and you will be locked out of a particular gear.

i dont think it was a tsb, it was a tech note or something like that.... but mazda was aware of the problem...

do a search for shift fork and you should come across it... you will have to go back a way..

if you cant find it send me a pm and i will help you look..

Don't you love that? The search function sends you a list of threads, most of which were started in 2003, are 30+ pages long, and the topic you want is actually a hijack that gets quickly cut off. For people new to this forum and this car, there isn't a lot of efficient help here.

To those whose profession seems to be sitting at home typing the word "search" 20 times a day, why not just stop replying at all?????

I posted my question to Swoope b/c he seemed to be able to verify tdill8's VIN against the affected range very quickly. This lead me to believe he had the information close at hand, therefore, I asked him for it directly. I guess I was mistaken.

Swoope's advice made my car blow up and then I got home and found out that my dog was dead (also thanks to Swoope's advice).
