Hey guys,
I don't know if it is just me but how many k's do you guys get out of a tank?
I get about 340km's out of about 50L which i think is a tad less than 15L/100kms.

Granted this is done driving like miss daisy shifting below 3000 and almost choking the gears.

I have read the thread about fuel economy and am wondering how some people achieve better economy? If i drive her like God intended, then I don't even want to know what kind of economy I am getting.

I am not complaining about fuel economy since I already knew this and am perfectly happy to pay for it, only it wouldn't hurt to get a bit more out of her If i could.
PCM upgrade maybe?

OK things that I've notice that will dramatically increase your fuel consumption.

1. Being stuck in traffic.
2. Fouled / dirty spark plugs
3. short shifting.. ie shifting before 3000rpm
4. redlining all the time.. a few times a week is good, but beeping with every shift will make her drink like an alcoholic during happy hour
5. racing / tracking her.. but you knew this right?? ;-)

I get about 12lt/100kms....but in SA we have no traffic....try switching the car off in heavy traffic when you are idling for ages if you are really concerned...

As time passes Grasshopper you will learn not to sweat the small stuff. :Freak_ani

Better yet....cover the fuel gauge on the dash except for the low fuel light...don't count k's and drive the car to enjoy it....

There's always the hydrogen cars...battery operated Honda's or Toyota Pruis....god forbid I have uttered those words...... :hahano:

The car will use more fuel and your economy isn't too bad considering....

Have you got your tyres and oil sorted yet?? :nono:

340 / tank isn't bad!

My avg is around 300-320 kms, but then again, I always have fun with it.

I get slightly better mileage when using BP Ultimate, but I use Optimax because for some reason, BP eats away the famous rotary 'burp'.

I have used sCANalayzer to try and fine tune my driving for optimum fuel consumption but that'd mean driving like a sissy all day; something i CANNOT do.

I've never had less than 450km out of a tank. Maybe I did once.....up at the Nats.

By the same token, I've only been brave enough to stretch 500km out of a tank twice... :) . I redline very rarely, but I hit 7k fairly often. Done nearly 50K.

...

you can take it from my wife that shifting below 3000rpm is a surefire way to get 500kms to a tank (roughly 11lt/100k). :shocking:

Where as me, I also get pretty consistant 15lt/100k

Differences? My wife drives flat, uncongested roads and shifts latest 4000rpm (I know cause it irritates me to see my car so abused :yelrotflm ), I drive pretty much short trips in hilly areas and generally shift around 6-7000rpm

I drive the way i feel like. Some cruising, some flooring it and enjoying the beep. Average 17L/100km if its only city driving. Mixed driving average 15.5L/100km. All those are when having fun. Now the best part was when i took a longer trip and was driving in relatively slow speeds (130-140 km/h) i got suddenly 430km on that tank instead of normally 310-315.

And the lesson of the story: Its an RX-8 drive it so you have fun!

I kept some detailed logs a while back on a Sydney brisbane trip.
It did not make much difference for me whether I was thrashing it or driving miss daisy around the city:

city/thrash cycle= ~320-340klms/tank
highway driving 110k cruise with overtaking squirts (3rd gear...): 580k/tank is my best, 550 avg.

Guys, has anyone given the new Shell long range unleaded a go? I've used a couple of tanks of LR Unleaded 95 now, and there are definite improvements in efficiency to be had. Around town, getting 11l/100km, down from around 13l/100km. (Fuel light comes on at just under 500km instead of 415km).

I also used a tank driving from Melb to the Great Ocean Road and back, so prob 400km of highway, and 200km of flogging the car in the hills. I still got an easy 10l/100km, so prob could have done better with steady highway driving.

I'd be interested if you guys get similar results :)

:boring: I'm sorry guys, but I find the "I get xxx kms from a tank" comments to be almost totally meaningless. There are so many variables which affect each tank range measure, including the season, fuel brew and ambient temps.

I was totally and unashamedly anal in running an electronic log book while I had my 8, and can tell you categorically that in the driving style and mix that I did:

- Long term average fuel economy for the 8, over 61,000k was 12.6L/100k -- yes, I will probably be called to give evidence on behalf of MA if anyone takes them to court over misleading fuel economy claims -- my car did what it said on the box :o:
- Worst, excluding track days ;) was 14.7L/100k -- what I call crappy urban driving
- Very spirited driving (AKA track work) with lots of WOT, will run you into 25+L/100k...no worries (but it's fun!)
- Best, secured on double demerit long weekend trip with cruise glued to 110kph, was 9.8L/100k

That was my car, with me driving, over the trips and use I did -- yours will be different.

Now, I'll shut up, but before doing that I just want you to know that the Polo, under exactly the same conditions (and with the same point to point times)...is averaging 7.8L/100k :o::mdrmed: :mdrmed:

I've been meaning to ask if anyone saw the segment on ACA or was it Today Tonight about Optimax extreme...

For those that didnt its an E10 mix, meaning it is 10% ethanol. But its 100RON octane. SO we get a more predictable flame front but less dense fuel...yet we have to pay, is it 15c/litre, more for it?

Cromax, I am not doubting your economy rating of 2 thumbs :) up but I dont see how it can be more economic when its a less energy dense fuel.

Cromax
09-04-2006, 10:55 PM
I'm not sure what they said on ACA and TT, but most of their stories on this stuff is sensationalised garbage to make people watch.

Essentially, by lower density, you're talking about 4kg/m^3 ... that is absolutley nothing! Therefore the difference in density between the regular and extreme optimax is minimal, if not negligable. The end boiling points are both 196ºC and they both contain roughly the same amount of sulpher. Benzine levels are higher on Extreme though, meaning it burns a bit cleaner ... and it has a higher RON of 100.4 instead of 98.4.

Here's the TDS for them:

I'd be interested if you have any data to support the claim that using Optimax extreme results in better fuel consumption figures.

I certainly tested various 98s vs 95s and found absolutely no difference in results

There have been various threads on this. The scientific explanation (simplified) is that while you may get better figures with a normal reciprocating engine, octane rating does not have the same effect on rotary combustion.

My advice: save your money and use a 'good' 95 ;)

Sorry didnt mean that to come out as if I actually believed what was said, just relaying what I saw.

Just gone back over what I read previously on this. Please realise I am a scientific dunce so I may not have the correct interpretation. The figures I was remembering were MJ/Ltr which for regular fuel is apparantly 32. Ethanol is about 20 and E10 ends up being 28 which is a 12.5% loss of energy over non blended fuel. So it would need to be a lot cleaner to make up for that sort of loss.

Or have I totally misunderstood it all?

Gibbo
09-05-2006, 12:48 AM
I love fuel economy talks of regular versus premium unleaded. For all those Opticrap...oops I mean Optimax extreme fans, do me a favour are you getting 10% better fuel economy from it, because that is what you are paying at the pump. The answer is always no, performance is also questionable.

BTW extreme is 5% ethanol not 10%, government regulations allow 10%.

They haven't just gone and added 5% of ethanol to a tank full of optimax. They've played with the structure of each to make sure the density isn't affected.

I find it smoother than Optimax 98, and I really don't care about the extra cost, as the amount you're talking about is negligable. I prefer not to drive with my foot buried on the accelerator as I do want to keep this car as long as I possibly can.

I want to keep my car for a while too, which is WHY I bury the foot as often as possible.

You'll have more problems driving like Nanna. :mdrmed:

I never said I drive like a Nanna.

If you want to thrash your engine, go right ahead ... it's your money not mine. Commodores are quite cheap, maybe you can get one once your engine turns into a claymore ;)

Oh yer ... and I've seen it happen to four RX7's, one was on a dyno ... bits go everywhere ... quite entertaining.

No, the RX8 is a cornering car dear boy, not a dragster.

Wow I have only had the car for 3 years, where were you when I was buying it, I could have done with this advice then.

Not at all, I look at them all the time, usually as I fly past giving the sh#t house driver the finger as I go.

See I am open minded :mdrmed:

 Gee, thanks Nanna. I'll be sure to remember that. Lucky I've got you to help me out with these things. Without you to advise me, I'd never have known where the redline was.

He he with only 33 posts up your sleeve Cromax you have hit what's called the RX8 nerve! You better put your money where your mouth is huh, Kal will sort you out quick smart if you are not apt at steering!!

Honestly though, don't be rude it;s only a forum and it's only a car come on!!

I drive mine like a rotary should be driven, don't care about economy no more and BTW if the tacho goes that high..use all them revvs....it will do the engine the world of good, however for all of you waiting for your engine recall maybe only revv to 5,000 rpm.

I don't use supermarket fuel and I don't care for anything other than 95. However knock yourselves out if you pay more for something you burn....do ya wear armani shoes and have his and hers sunglasses too....ROFLMAO!!!!!!

One final note. Glad Adelaide seems to be left out of the rivalry.

Well I'm off to pollute the atmoshere and burn some 95.... :mdrmed:

Wow, I under estimated you, I thought your arguements were alreday piss weak, but you certainly proved me wrong.
Please go easy on the bombardment of witty comebacks you are killing me here.

It's OK junior when you learn how to really drive a car and realise that pushing a car when driven right is not thrashing it then you can come and play with the big boys.

Until then you keep riding your clutch and thinking how smooth that gear change was, whilst the rest of us enjoy the car for what it is.

Maybe the auto was more your speed.

Bet I can pee higher than both of you. :piss: :p: :rollingla :rollingla

But I'm happy to admit Kall can drift better than me and Julia is for sure faster.  :)

It's all good with me. But having gone after me, Gibbo and Timbo all in the first week or so, Cromax might do better to chill out a bit. Let's talk cars and park the nasty shite.

This is all getting out of hand. I've obviously hit a nerve, either because a couple of people have big heads, or because they have shrunken extremeties. I'm leaving it here ... you're acting like kids when I'm the youngest here!

I really don't have the time to be bothered arguing with insufferable pests. Guys, and you know who you are, don't bother replying to this post as you won't get the reaction you desire.

Get back on topic FFS!

Mate, the only person acting like a kid in here is you. Don't worry about a response. You've gone to the top of my ignore list with a bullet. Indeed, you're the only one on it.

My 8th grade girlfriend gave that name to me and It suck ever since. Maybe she thought I was a monkey.

Besides I don't think I would have made it out of highschool alive if my name really was mogley.
