15/L/100kms? ARGH!
Hey guys,
I don't know if it is just me but how many k's do you guys get out of a tank? I get about 340km's out of about 50L which i think is a tad less than 15L/100kms. Granted this is done driving like miss daisy shifting below 3000 and almost choking the gears. I have read the thread about fuel economy and am wondering how some people achieve better economy? If i drive her like God intended, then I don't even want to know what kind of economy I am getting. I am not complaining about fuel economy since I already knew this and am perfectly happy to pay for it, only it wouldn't hurt to get a bit more out of her If i could. PCM upgrade maybe? |
I never shift below 5000rpm. Economy has averaged 13L/100km.
|
i get 330ks regularly driving around town & giving it plenty of revs most of the time . Try having a bit more fun & see what mileage you get then - maybe it will be the same . I am getting a piggyback ecu & will post if there are any mpg improvements .

I've said this to the Yanks so I may as well say it here too:
Fuel economy threads are the beige wallpaper of RX8 forums. :mdrmed: It drinks - get over it. ;) |
OK things that I've notice that will dramatically increase your fuel consumption.
1. Being stuck in traffic. 2. Fouled / dirty spark plugs 3. short shifting.. ie shifting before 3000rpm 4. redlining all the time.. a few times a week is good, but beeping with every shift will make her drink like an alcoholic during happy hour 5. racing / tracking her.. but you knew this right?? ;-) |
I'm with Dave...get over the beige!
I get about 12lt/100kms....but in SA we have no traffic....try switching the car off in heavy traffic when you are idling for ages if you are really concerned...
As time passes Grasshopper you will learn not to sweat the small stuff. :Freak_ani Better yet....cover the fuel gauge on the dash except for the low fuel light...don't count k's and drive the car to enjoy it.... There's always the hydrogen cars...battery operated Honda's or Toyota Pruis....god forbid I have uttered those words...... :hahano: The car will use more fuel and your economy isn't too bad considering.... Have you got your tyres and oil sorted yet?? :nono: |
340 / tank isn't bad!
My avg is around 300-320 kms, but then again, I always have fun with it. I get slightly better mileage when using BP Ultimate, but I use Optimax because for some reason, BP eats away the famous rotary 'burp'. I have used sCANalayzer to try and fine tune my driving for optimum fuel consumption but that'd mean driving like a sissy all day; something i CANNOT do. |
I've never had less than 450km out of a tank. Maybe I did once.....up at the Nats.
By the same token, I've only been brave enough to stretch 500km out of a tank twice... :) . I redline very rarely, but I hit 7k fairly often. Done nearly 50K. |

Has never scratched a rim (or anything else). Achieves excellent fuel economy. Gomez, are you driving Miss Daisy around Melbourne or what? :mdrmed: I'm happy to say I have no clue what my fuel economy is. When the tank gets low I fill it up. Otherwise, I'm having too much fun to give a stuff. ;) :p: |

... 3. short shifting.. ie shifting before 3000rpm ... Where as me, I also get pretty consistant 15lt/100k Differences? My wife drives flat, uncongested roads and shifts latest 4000rpm (I know cause it irritates me to see my car so abused :yelrotflm ), I drive pretty much short trips in hilly areas and generally shift around 6-7000rpm |
I drive the way i feel like. Some cruising, some flooring it and enjoying the beep. Average 17L/100km if its only city driving. Mixed driving average 15.5L/100km. All those are when having fun. Now the best part was when i took a longer trip and was driving in relatively slow speeds (130-140 km/h) i got suddenly 430km on that tank instead of normally 310-315.
And the lesson of the story: Its an RX-8 drive it so you have fun! |
I kept some detailed logs a while back on a Sydney brisbane trip.
It did not make much difference for me whether I was thrashing it or driving miss daisy around the city: city/thrash cycle= ~320-340klms/tank highway driving 110k cruise with overtaking squirts (3rd gear...): 580k/tank is my best, 550 avg. |
I get around 380km to a 55 litre fill around town and it has been that way for 2 years. Car has 65000Km now and have not seen any change for at least three flash code updates.
|
I'm getting 330km per tank driving Katherine-Darwin, but that is sitting on 170km/h for two thirds of the trip. I don't feel so bad about my fuel ecomony now!
I actually "flamed out" with 5km to go last time. Good thing I carry a 5L jerry can just in case. |

Wait... I just worked it out. 460L/100km on the highway. More for "spirited driving". Ouch! |
