Hi, everyone, just got my 8 monday, and the seller told me something about engine flood, and i had no clue of what he was talking about, so what exactly is engine flood, how to prevent it, and how do you know when there is engine flood??

engine flood is basically when there is left over fuel in the engine chambers.... This almost always occurs when you shut your car off when the engine is still cold.... i.e. during the winter... The way to prevent it is try and avoid short trips, and always shut the car off when the temperature gauge is in the middle of the dial...... If you are going to shut the car off when its still cold, a good way to prevent it is, rev the engine to 3 RPM for about 5-10 seconds, and then return it to idle and shut the car off, this should prevent flooding.... Finally to answer your question you know you have a flooded engine well it doesn't start... no matter how hard you crank it (which never do because it weakens the battery).... if it is flooded just look in the manual for the de-chocking procedure! good luck, next time try and use the search button

I just recently bought an 06 8 and it came with a DVD about the info on my new 8. If you have flooded the engine, hold the accelerator to the floor, and try to start for 8-10 seconds. Then wait a minute and try to just regularly start your 8 and it should fire right up. So says the DVD, i havent had to use this process yet.

Something wrong with your post.

When you floor the accelerator, you're actually telling the ECU(computer) that you DONT WANT ANY fuel to be injected into the combustion chamber. and it will just spin the rotor without any fuel by the battery.

Hold it, crank the engine for 8-10 seconds, nothing more! Cuz you might drain and kill your battery(it use ALOT of battery power to move you know) after that, let your feet go, crank normally and you *should* be able to push most of the fuel out and start the car.

sad part is that, by doing this, you're pushing the fuel to your CAT, which WILL shorten your Cat's life by ALOT(because it BURNS), and sometimes in the worst scenario is that, your CAT might break and clog, result is sloppy car and CEL. Mazda will fix it for you for FREE as LONG as you're under warranty. but I dont think you want to leave your 8 away from you every 2 weeks !

So just DONT DO the "de-flood" thing for fun !

they should just have a little hole with a solenoid in the bottom of each chamber that you can trigger open to let out all that excess fuel.

Too many things wrong with your post, so I'll just focus on this statement. Reving the engine doesn't prevent flooding. It can and will flood even after 10 seconds. You need to warm up the engine to prevent it from flooding. What can help is getting the upgraded starter and batt.

also make sure that when you turn the ignition key in cold weather that you hold it long enough....i had some problems with flooding in the winter. Dealer says that the disabler in the key takes a second to transmit to allow engine to start....if you don't hold it long enough fuel can flood the engine without igniting.
