Man. Yesterday around 7 oclock , I took my girlfriend out to watch a movie .

All these unpraved garbage roads in NYC makes me sick. all these freaking manholes just sticks up, I saw it but with cars on my left and right I cant reallly dodge it. The best I could do was to make the damage as low as possible. So I drove around it with my left wheel, but it Still hit the bottom of my car; and the result was one of my 3rd member Brace was GONE. I can feel the BOOM and ok ...

Just took my car to one of the shop that I know to lift the car up, and of course took the "broken" parts out .... now gotta buy a new one. might as well just get AutoEXE or MS parts ...

I will upload the pictures later tonight (as soon as Im home.) So you guys will have an idea what was the damage all about.

*hint* If you're in/going to NYC, do NOT drive on 28th ST between 9th and 4th AVE (I got owned at around Park AVE)

sorry to hear about that, are you going to pursue it with the city? Being a foreigner I'm not sure but don't they have standards for road condition that they have to adhere to

i live in staten island, where the streets are worse than a third world country

queens isnt any better, i think all of the five boros in general suck balls!! (as far as road conditions go! lol)

just like to say the roads here in uk,are really rubbish to, we have plenty of pot holes, badly laid surfaces, and lots of rubbish in the gutters and centres of roads , never getting cleaned up, and we have to pay a road tax to bloody well drive on them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.gets me really mad :wallbash:

NGCGPS, that sucks man. I hope you get to sue the crap out of the city for that. All that money and they cant fix crap. I know the roads in NJ are for sh!t too. Just like in CA city of LA.

I-5 through parts of Washington are pretty shitty, too. Feels like you have square wheels on, particularly at their 70 MPH speed limit. Then there are layers of road that have literally broken out so you have some major bumps. Oh sure, the pavement is not completely missing, just a layer or two here and there, like every half a mile at most in a lot of stretches. I'm surprised I didn't have a ton of rattles driving over this or from this!! The only rattle I heard was because the latch on one of the back pop-out windows wasn't fully latched closed. Closed it and was fine. I can't imagine having to drive with huge, sticking up manhole covers. That has to be a huge safety and liability issue for the city. Are they doing a lot of construction in this area so they ripped up the roads??

When they do this, I swear, the manhole covers—smack in the middle of the road—stick up maybe 3 - 5" above the road surface, which is now sawtoothed and riddled with craters. Oh and did I mention all the dust? It looks like a scene from the lead story of any recent newscast.

this happened to me before, except my dad was the one who was out driving the car... i still want to know where he took the damned thing.

anyway, i just went with the OEM replacement. didn't really have the money for an autoexe replacement at the time. also, don't the autoexe parts take quite a while to ship? or do companies actually stock the parts... i know mazdaparts.com sells the autoexe stuff...

The roads are in much better condition in England than here...

Yesterday morning I rushed to the auto shop, told them to lift the car up and check for damage ... and ...

my god ! the 3rd member brace was like some twisted metal .... Thanks New York !

Took it out and snap a pic of it ... sigh ...

Maybe I should go with OEM replacement for now.... thinking.

Hey listen—I'm pretty sure you can file a claim against the city and they'll pay you for damages. If I were you I'd definitely take a picture of the offending street and manhole cover.

Well around here if you call LAPD to report a traffic collision you will be asked if there are any injuries. If you reply "no" you will be instructed to go to a police station within 72 hours to fill out your own report.

I don't know how NYPD would respond to a call requesting an officer come out to take down a report of someone driving over a pothole.

Because I don't think you need to do that if a pothole damages your car—on the claim form, way down on the form it asks if the police investigated the accident, as if it's optional. And a police report is not on the list of "required items" you need to submit. Also, sometimes when you hit a pothole you may not notice the damage—like a slightly bent wheel—immediately. But I could be wrong.

sorry to hear what happened.... but I actually love driving in NYC because everyone drives like they stole their car hahaha, so flowing with traffic is fun..... plus my cousins live in LI so I go their often....

Back in '91 I had three of my four STEEL wheels on my Jetta (185/60-14's) dinged by a pothole on the BQE. I hope my 18's can stand a single trip into The City. :)

Damn that blows. And people wonder why I take my time driving around here. All of a sudden, you turn a corner and there's a 3-4" drop from where they scraped the road surface and 20 feet later there's a huge manhole sticking up out of the ground.
