View Full Version : I HATE DRIVING IN NEW YORK CITY !
nycgps 04-29-2006, 08:56 AM Man. Yesterday around 7 oclock , I took my girlfriend out to watch a movie .
All these unpraved garbage roads in NYC makes me sick. all these freaking manholes just sticks up, I saw it but with cars on my left and right I cant reallly dodge it. The best I could do was to make the damage as low as possible. So I drove around it with my left wheel, but it Still hit the bottom of my car; and the result was one of my 3rd member Brace was GONE. I can feel the BOOM and ok ...
Just took my car to one of the shop that I know to lift the car up, and of course took the "broken" parts out .... now gotta buy a new one. might as well just get AutoEXE or MS parts ...
I will upload the pictures later tonight (as soon as Im home.) So you guys will have an idea what was the damage all about.
*hint* If you're in/going to NYC, do NOT drive on 28th ST between 9th and 4th AVE (I got owned at around Park AVE)
aHHHHHHH
*EDITED TO ADD PICTURES*
This is what the member brace looks like right now. SIGH .....
voodooray 04-29-2006, 11:52 AM sorry to hear about that, are you going to pursue it with the city? Being a foreigner I'm not sure but don't they have standards for road condition that they have to adhere to
Velocity Red RX-8 04-29-2006, 12:20 PM i live in staten island, where the streets are worse than a third world country
9kandgoing 04-29-2006, 12:26 PM queens isnt any better, i think all of the five boros in general suck balls!! (as far as road conditions go! lol)
skynyrdman 04-29-2006, 01:18 PM just like to say the roads here in uk,are really rubbish to, we have plenty of pot holes, badly laid surfaces, and lots of rubbish in the gutters and centres of roads , never getting cleaned up, and we have to pay a road tax to bloody well drive on them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.gets me really mad :wallbash:
DOMINION 04-29-2006, 02:33 PM NGCGPS, that sucks man. I hope you get to sue the crap out of the city for that. All that money and they cant fix crap. I know the roads in NJ are for sh!t too. Just like in CA city of LA.
BunnyGirl 04-29-2006, 04:03 PM I-5 through parts of Washington are pretty shitty, too. Feels like you have square wheels on, particularly at their 70 MPH speed limit. Then there are layers of road that have literally broken out so you have some major bumps. Oh sure, the pavement is not completely missing, just a layer or two here and there, like every half a mile at most in a lot of stretches. I'm surprised I didn't have a ton of rattles driving over this or from this!! The only rattle I heard was because the latch on one of the back pop-out windows wasn't fully latched closed. Closed it and was fine. I can't imagine having to drive with huge, sticking up manhole covers. That has to be a huge safety and liability issue for the city. Are they doing a lot of construction in this area so they ripped up the roads??
New Yorker 04-29-2006, 06:05 PM Driving in the city, it's not unusual to turn onto a street you just used yesterday and—SURPRISE!—with no warning, it's been torn up for repaving (which, of course, won't happen for several days). When they do this, I swear, the manhole covers—smack in the middle of the road—stick up maybe 3 - 5" above the road surface, which is now sawtoothed and riddled with craters. Oh and did I mention all the dust? It looks like a scene from the lead story of any recent newscast.
zaglo6204 04-29-2006, 06:19 PM this happened to me before, except my dad was the one who was out driving the car... i still want to know where he took the damned thing.
anyway, i just went with the OEM replacement. didn't really have the money for an autoexe replacement at the time. also, don't the autoexe parts take quite a while to ship? or do companies actually stock the parts... i know mazdaparts.com sells the autoexe stuff...

The roads are in much better condition in England than here...
John Sung 04-30-2006, 02:54 AM ya~ that's too bad man~ i know that road.. that's so suck man~ if other rx8 owners go there,

Thats excatly what I mean.
Yesterday morning I rushed to the auto shop, told them to lift the car up and check for damage ... and ...
my god ! the 3rd member brace was like some twisted metal .... Thanks New York !
Took it out and snap a pic of it ... sigh ...
Maybe I should go with OEM replacement for now.... thinking.
I was Too busy last night that I didnt even go home, so the picture is still in my camera. Will upload as soon as Im home.
New Yorker 04-30-2006, 07:52 AM Hey listen—I'm pretty sure you can file a claim against the city and they'll pay you for damages. If I were you I'd definitely take a picture of the offending street and manhole cover.
"If your vehicle is damaged by a pothole, you can file a claim with the City of New York. Visit the New York City Comptroller's website and use the claim form (in pdf format) or call (212) 669-3500."
Go to this address—it's all here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/motorist/pothole.html
BunnyGirl 04-30-2006, 09:42 AM Doesn't that generally require you to call the police and to then wait around right by where it happened so they can take down a report?
Freddie 04-30-2006, 10:04 AM Doesn't that generally require you to call the police and to then wait around right by where it happened so they can take down a report?
Well around here if you call LAPD to report a traffic collision you will be asked if there are any injuries. If you reply "no" you will be instructed to go to a police station within 72 hours to fill out your own report.
I don't know how NYPD would respond to a call requesting an officer come out to take down a report of someone driving over a pothole.
New Yorker 04-30-2006, 03:49 PM Doesn't that generally require you to call the police and to then wait around right by where it happened so they can take down a report?I don't think so. Because I don't think you need to do that if a pothole damages your car—on the claim form, way down on the form it asks if the police investigated the accident, as if it's optional. And a police report is not on the list of "required items" you need to submit. Also, sometimes when you hit a pothole you may not notice the damage—like a slightly bent wheel—immediately. But I could be wrong.
FASTNMEAN8 04-30-2006, 05:33 PM sorry to hear what happened.... but I actually love driving in NYC because everyone drives like they stole their car hahaha, so flowing with traffic is fun..... plus my cousins live in LI so I go their often....
DrDiaboloco 04-30-2006, 07:09 PM Uh oh.... I'm going to take my gal into NYC next weekend for a Broadway show, then out to LI for the night.
Grrrrrr
Back in '91 I had three of my four STEEL wheels on my Jetta (185/60-14's) dinged by a pothole on the BQE. I hope my 18's can stand a single trip into The City. :)
Velocity Red RX-8 04-30-2006, 07:24 PM i hate new york streets but id rather be driving a pontiac aztek in new york then a ferrari in IOWA or some other place

nycgps 04-30-2006, 09:57 PM Ok, added picture to the first post.

I want to know. Thanks :(
NgoRX8 04-30-2006, 10:00 PM oh shit... that hurts. looks like whatever you hit just grabbed on it and crushed it.
FASTNMEAN8 04-30-2006, 10:49 PM oww that just hurts looking at it... the city should pay for it, I mean it's their responsibility to make sure potholes are filled, its the least they can do after taking our tax dollars... sorry to hear that happened to you man.. Good Luck! if i win the powerball i'll buy you a new one!

No one reply to my post (about how much it cost) .... yet :suspect:
Luftwaffle 05-01-2006, 08:56 AM Damn that blows. And people wonder why I take my time driving around here. All of a sudden, you turn a corner and there's a 3-4" drop from where they scraped the road surface and 20 feet later there's a huge manhole sticking up out of the ground.
