I really hope I'm not in the minority with this problem on my exhaust tips...if I am, it's back to the dealership to raise hell :)

I'm getting this black build up on my car (already, only 500km) on the bottom of the exhaust tip. It doesn't wash off with regular car wash soap...so I'm guessing a metal polish will have to be used.

Question is two part...what are you guys using to clean it, and is it normal to get this on the RX-8? (I was thinking it might be some debris/crud from using the exhaust for the first time, etc....but what do I know).

This is just because the car runs very rich. It is normal my car gets that too. Everytime I clean my car I just clean the exhaust tip too and that crap comes right off. Use a glass or chrome cleaner and that black stuff comes right off.

Same here, didn't clean it though, I might next time.

I have got the same thing. Doesn't take long to accumulate after a thorough cleaning either.

Use Turtle Wax chrome polish. It will take the black soot off and if there is tar build up it will remove that also.

Yeah, I'm with you on the crud coming out of the exhaust. I cleaned mine yesterday and already I have more build up. I carry a clean rag in the trunk with me and wipe them down after I get home. I think keeping them clean is the important part. If you let them build up it may be hard to get rid of.

I try to get mine clean, but I'm going to have to get some chrome cleaner or something more potent. Do the chrome tips you can get stay any cleaner?

I use a degreaser and it comes right off.. I spray it on and and after thirty or so second i use and old towel to wipe it off. I also put a towel underneith just incase the degreaser does anything nasty to my exhaust finsihers :)

Those are actually burnt engine oil grease. A little bit of dawn will work just as well.

Just don't get the Dawn on the paint, it will remove any wax or sealant you have on there.

Dawn touched my paint today... well, I did do a full detail. Didn't try it on the exhaust tips though.

...but I REFUSE to polish the inside of the tips! THAT is just too gay. How do you decide where to stop? (How far up do YOU go? ....you see the problem.) You would have to "do" them daily to keep 'em sparkly, then everyone who sees them would know you are a, well, a poseur.

The good Lord Rotaro intended for them to look like that, anything less smooty would be in defiance of his mighty intent!

I agree, makes our stainless look better than new. Makes subsequent cleanings easier after using once a month.
It's also great for the rotary accents!

The Eagle One product is the same thing. Once the outside and inside first inch or two are polished (may need a metal polish the first time) it is very easy to maintain with your wash rag and an occasional once over with the Nevr Dull.
