View Full Version : Front Splash Guards anyone?
Racer X-8 08-06-2003, 12:41 PM I've been trying to imagine the front splash guards, in addition to the side & rear aeroflares.
Would they go well together or not?
Anybody got pix or something? I've seen lots of pix of the aeroflares & the brochure pic of the front splash guards, but that's about it...
red_rx8_red_int 08-17-2003, 11:22 PM I think they would be a great addition to the appearance package. Maybe some photoshop type person can do some cut and paste work to create a picture.
Evil Weevil 08-21-2003, 07:06 AM Just like to say ... I'd lke to see this combination too... anyone ??
red_rx8_red_int 08-31-2003, 11:01 PM Bump,
And I bite the bullet and ordered the front splash guards along with the strakes, exhaust finishers, and the foot lights. Went a little over the 500 debit card limit. I'll post pics of my red w/ appearance pkg and the splash guards when they're on.
mikeb 09-01-2003, 03:06 AM did you already recieved your 500 debit card????

Evil Weevil 09-02-2003, 03:36 PM Thanks wave - appreciate it.
Hmmmnn - something to think about. Could be getting a bit 'fussy' round the sill maybe - dunno!
Could you take the front guard and the sill trim off, just leaving the rear splash guard - when you get the chance.
Cheers!
Racer X-8 09-02-2003, 04:23 PM Thanks Wave!!!
That's it! Da Bomb! This is a must-buy w/ aero-stuff.

Hey! That's my car. :D :D :D
RX-8 Zoomster 09-02-2003, 04:37 PM But this is my favorite shot. Shows, air dam, aero flares & spoiler all in one shot. Plus, it shows the color red on an overcast day - my favorite shade.

Yeah it is!! I want YOUR car!! ;) Hey can I get some high res shots of your car?
RX-8 Zoomster 09-02-2003, 04:51 PM Here's a view in the opposite direction.

Yeah, no problem. Look at my link to my pictures, and let me know which ones you want. Then I can Email them to you. Almost all the pictures I posted, I cropped down in Paint Shop Pro. Most hi-res picts average about 1mb in size.

I'm not sure what you are asking here. Please explain.

Thanks!! These are the ones I would like. Send them to wave@wavidart.com. Size should not be a problem coming on my end. :)

I think he means take off the front mudguard and the front part of the aero flare. Just leave the rear panel of the aero flare on there.
I appreciate you posting the picture of my car with the front mud guards on it. I gives me a good idea of what to expect. I have mixed feelings. In a way it looks too busy. I might just stay with what I got.
Evil Weevil 09-03-2003, 08:23 AM RX-8 Zoomster got me - just the rear guard (behind the rear wheel)... just to see what it looks like.
And thanks again :)

And thanks again :) That's the rear aeroflare, not the rear splash guard. There is a difference and both are separately available from Trussville Mazda. Thought I might make that perfectly clear...
Evil Weevil 09-03-2003, 03:41 PM Ahh, right... so the rear aeroflare is a one-piece panel that runs across the back? And there is a seperate option of two smaller mud-guards at the rear?

The aero flare set consists of two pieces, one in front of the wheel (side aero flare), and the part behind the wheel (rear aero flare). But they can be bought separately. The rear splash "mud" guards are a totally different option and is different in looks. Here is a picture that will show the difference.
DAC17 09-03-2003, 08:41 PM How difficult are the front splash guards to install? Can they be done without a lift?
Thanks.

Thanks.
I'm sure it's not too difficult. Probably just a few holes to drill and screws inserted. At least one drill point is probably in the wheel well. Depending on where the others are you might just have to jack up the car on that end, to have better access to the drill points underneath. I don't see a lift necessary, although if you are access to one, it would be easier.

Evil Weevil 09-04-2003, 08:35 AM Thanks guys!! - Wave for the pic - exactly what I wanted to see.
And RX8-Zoomster - excellent pic - many thanks for that. I ventured into a local dealer here in the UK and they had one (1!) accessory/options catalogue and no price list  . They kindly let me have a moment alone with it and assured me that most dealers don't even have one yet. Sheesh - we are so far behind you guys with this damn car!!
Racer X-8 09-04-2003, 09:55 AM Well then, you might find this useful.

As for pricing, uh, dunno. US pricing is here somewhere. Do a search here for pricing. It should at least give you a good idea within ballpark range.
i, too, have always wondered what the app. package with the front splash guard would look like, but i think i like the appearance package without the front splash guards...IMO it looks, then, a bit busy with the front ones on as well...but after seeing these pics with the stock wing, i think i may have to go buy one
spdspappy 09-14-2003, 03:56 PM Has anyone that has put front/rear splash guards on noticed a difference w/ the car getting dirty? On the main street I have to drive down they like to water the street (new sprinkler system, water goes all over the place on the street, no way to get around it :( ). When I drive through it, it gets my nicely washed/polished/waxed car all dirty  . I'm just wondering if the splash guards would help.
mikeb 09-14-2003, 04:49 PM splash guards should defenitly help that
Evil Weevil 09-22-2003, 08:04 AM Here in the UK, we get the following options (amongst others)...
*Tyre deflectors £475 (set - front and rear)
*Rear Under Deflector £324
*Mud Flaps £125 (front) , £100 (rear)
My questions are...
(1) Why is the under deflector so much more expensive than the rear mud flaps? I accept that it's' shape is more in keeping with the lines of the car, but even so...
(2) are the tyre deflectors a set? - i.e. pieces in front of, and behind each wheel (8 pieces in total). I had assumed that this was just an 'in front of the wheel' piece but the UK accessory catalogue shows a picture of the tyre deflectors that incorporate a piece behind the front wheel that does not match the mud-flap (page 2, picture 2).

great pics
Racer X-8 09-25-2003, 04:23 PM Yessir, I think we have a new winner! Nice!;)
Those front splash guards are definitely worth it!
spdspappy 09-25-2003, 05:50 PM Nice! I really like the exhaust finishers as well! How difficult are the finishers & splash guards to put on?
mikeb 09-25-2003, 08:44 PM I've heard the exhaust finshers are a pain but they look great and as far as the front guards those must be just a couple of screws
Ned M 09-26-2003, 12:16 AM Dammit, I just let the dealer service dept. talk me out of installing front splash guards on my black RX-8 GT w/aero kit.
They actually phoned me from the service dept. to tell me how bad it would look, they would hang too low, etc. I think the front guards look just fine on your red car.
I think I'll get these jokers back on the phone tomorrow and re-order the splash guards. To each his own, but they don't look out of balance to me.
From what I can see you only need to remove a small moon-shaped plastic piece at the front end of the rocker panel to install the front splashes, am I right?
I don't think you can go wrong with any or no options on this car. They all look good!!! But after seeing those front splash guards on his I want them too!! I know some have said that they think it might be too much, but I think it makes it look even better!!!
red_rx8_red_int 09-27-2003, 10:13 AM Splash guards were real easy to put on. No drilling required. First one took about 25 minutes because I carefully read the instructions and did everything very carefully. The second side took less than 10 minutes. In between doing the first and second sides, I brought my wife and three kids out for their opinions. The consensus was OK with or without. I agreed, the guard didn't add much but didn't take away either. Now though, they've grown on me and I think they do add alot to the appearance, plus they're functional.
Regarding the finishers, they were a real pain. I started with MazdaTrix's instructions and couldn't get the tabs to release. So I moved on to Mazda's method. Took off one interior trunk panel and decided I was not going to take this route. Then I tried the third method--trying to drill a hole with out removing anything. Couldn't do it-too much angle to get the bit to bite. Finally in frustration, I revisited MazdaTrix's method. It worked! The key is to pull really really hard, almost as hard as I could. It's not that depressing the tabs allows them to slide out easy. Some did, but for most, depressing the tab seemed to do little, it was the strong pulling force that allows you to disengage the tab from the body.

Besides the moon-shaped piece, you also have to remove a black rubber stip and cut 5-6 inches off of it. If you look at the last picture very carefully you'll see something black extending under the car from the splash guard to the rear flair. It's held in place by two screws and about a dozen clips. The clips are released by pushing perpendicular to the strip. The instructions were good as to where to push but not as to what direction. I used an utility knife to cut the first strip-took many passes and about 6-8 minutes. I used a steak knife on the second strip and it took 1-2 minutes.

Thanks for that. I'd seen the rubber strip but thought maybe it could be left in place underneath the splash guard. I've already told the dealer to re-order the front guards, and I'll put them on myself - I don't trust them to do it right. My tinsnips should handle the rubber strip in short order.

Just my opinion but the reason the front splash guards look Ok on this 8 is because the window tint and rear spoiler seem to balance it at the back.
I've seen some other shots of 8s with the front guards on, and they aren't quite as good looking.

flyboyindy 02-20-2004, 10:26 PM I put the front air dam and side skirts on and now I have to decide whether or not to go with the mud flaps or the rear flares....I love the flares, but the mud flaps look good too and alot less money.... Does anyone know if you have to do alot of drilling to fit the rear flares?
