View Full Version : Blown Engine
OfficerFarva 10-30-2005, 08:33 PM So pretty much this weekend has sucked nuts. I took my car to a local shop, and now I don't know how they can call themselves a shop, to tune my car since I have the r flash and the greddy turbo. I was thinking they just have to fix sum afrs, and within 2 hrs or so we should be good. Little did I know the tuner was a complete moron. The guy doing the emanage maps i found out after they blew my engine doesnt even work there, and had never used emanage before. They werent getting any boost pressure readings on the laptop, and did not hook up my boost gauge like i had requested, so they had no clue what the turbo was doing yet proceeded to dyno it 38 times! If the line was infact melted, then the boost gauge would not have shown a reading, but then they should have realized the line was not functioning properly! Anyway, to make a long story short they over boosted the hell out of the car and leaned the hell out of it as well, and while doing so proeceeded to kill my engine! They told me it faield the compression test after it would not start, i believe the 2nd rotor read like 25 on the gauge!! I now do not know how this problem will be resolved, but i do know i am without my rx-8....
gonnahanvan8 10-30-2005, 08:35 PM I think your attorny will be able to straighten it all out for you.
OfficerFarva 10-30-2005, 08:38 PM I believe so too. I'm just sad b/c I still have not driven this car full throttle with the kit on and won't be able too for quite a while :(.
lesper4 10-30-2005, 08:43 PM I think your attorny will be able to straighten it all out for you.
Sorry to hear that, but I think he is right attorney time and a short (feels lengthy) departure from your 8.
adrian-1 10-30-2005, 08:44 PM Does the car not even run now? Compression test on a rotary is different. They need special equipment. Did they even do that correctly?
Did you sign a liablilty waiver. I know I had to before getting it dynotuned. Most dyno shops require it.
Mugatu 10-30-2005, 08:45 PM and you know Mazda ain't gonna get you a new engine, with the turbo and all.
OfficerFarva 10-30-2005, 08:50 PM Yea they are supposed to know about rotary compression tests. They are a rotary performance shop, and the closest one to my house. Thats why I gotinto this mess in the first place. No the car wouldnt start, so they checked the plugs and they were fine. It is currently not making enough compression to turn over!! And no, no liability wavers. I'm just amazed on how these people call themselves professionals!! I don't know much about tuning cars, but for god sakes i wouldnt run a car on a dyno as much as them and especially w/o ever knowing what the turbo was doing! I'm just baffled at their ignorance and incompetence of their craft.
BRealistic 10-30-2005, 08:57 PM That sucks dude. There are way too many idiots out there claiming to be tuners. On the flip side, maybe instead of buying a new engine you can rebuild your engine up for the turbo? Has anybody ported a Renesis yet?
zoomzoom_8 10-30-2005, 08:59 PM Man, I have no advice except check with mazparts so the shop can buy you a newer engine. But man, i am so sorry to hear about your troubles. Good luck, departures with the 8 really suck, trust me i know
OfficerFarva 10-30-2005, 09:02 PM Well, whatever happens, the shop is gonna have to pay for it. If they don't comply, they are gonna be sued. If they are seriously speacialsts in rotary engines, I'm sure they can get a new enegine or at least pay for this engines reconstruction. If they offer to rebuild it, I don't know, b/c honestly I don't want them turning a wrench on this car.
abbid 10-30-2005, 09:11 PM if the story is true, regardless of him signing a liability waiver or not, the shop is still responsible since the tuner was a non-employee...
OfficerFarva 10-30-2005, 09:18 PM Beleive me man, this story is entirely true. The name of the Shop is Sneed's Speedshop. I had 4 friends with me who were all whitnesses too, and there was definitely no form ever signed.
swoope 10-30-2005, 09:19 PM wow,
suxs hard, but the good news is that a new motor is less than the turbo kit. i think rosenthal has them for ~ 2500.
did i mention this really suxs!!!!!!!
beers
btw, would love to see the dyno before it blew.
RotoRocket 10-30-2005, 09:20 PM Farva, just my advice, so heed it if you want to or not, but I wouldn't post the name of the shop until you see if you can get the matter resolved amicably first.
Just a thought.
OfficerFarva 10-30-2005, 09:25 PM I'm posting the name of the shop so any1 around here doesn't make the mistake i did.
RotoRocket 10-30-2005, 09:28 PM Very well.
OfficerFarva 10-30-2005, 09:32 PM o thanks for mentioning rosenthal. The price when the link is clicked however changes to 3495.
BRealistic 10-30-2005, 09:36 PM I'm posting the name of the shop so any1 around here doesn't make the mistake i did.
I think that RotoRocket was concerned with the shop seeing or hearing about this thread, then changing how they deal with you because of it (they see it as smearing their name). I would avoid using names until you find out exactly what they are going to do.
swoope 10-30-2005, 09:37 PM call tommy.

Exactly.
colin204 10-30-2005, 09:39 PM o thanks for mentioning rosenthal. The price when the link is clicked however changes to 3495.
It changed to 3495 because of a core charge of 1000.
OfficerFarva 10-30-2005, 09:40 PM it says there is a $1,000 core charge, so i spose that explains the price jump.
red22 10-30-2005, 09:44 PM mod edit- idiotic post

very helpful.

OfficerFarva 10-30-2005, 10:17 PM lol. Sueing would be the last thing I'd hope for, because if i ended up doing it it would take a long time and probably end up costing more money than it's worth. I just hope they are friendly about it and pay for their damages so i can get my car back asap.
Horse 10-30-2005, 10:38 PM Man that sucks, ansd you just put the turbo on too. Sorry about the loss, but perhaps we can use this to an advantage, was there any data logging goin on right before it blew. Perhaps we can use your mishap to at least establish some limit of the Renesis.
OfficerFarva 10-31-2005, 02:14 PM I am going back to the shop today to talk everything over and hope to god somehting can happen quickly and painlessly. I will see if they have each and every dyno run saved. Wish me luck everyone, I think I'm gonna need it.
gonnahanvan8 10-31-2005, 02:47 PM Since it's Halloween, you should dress up as a street walker. That way, if they try to f&*k you, you will feel like you had it coming. Best of luck. It might turn out alright after all.
Red Devil 10-31-2005, 02:55 PM Wow...I'd be curious to know how you decided to go with these guys? Was it word of mouth, etc...that pointed you in their direction?
Hopefully things work out for you.
Moonrover333 10-31-2005, 03:19 PM dude i can completely feel your pain i just bought my car and it took a crap on itself 2hrs from home and i had to wait 7 for a tow home but its back in stock trim and i'm lovin it well cept for break in (snore) but i def hope things work out for you hopefully you get a good gas saving rental like i did (reccomend a 2005 camry for older folks and buisness people 80mph for like an hour and a half and still got 26mpg)
OfficerFarva 10-31-2005, 06:39 PM lol, thanks but I'm driving my bros 04 accord now, 4cyl, so good gas saver. Anyway, i went back today and they shoved the same poop down my throat as they did previously. I called another professional and told him my situation. He agrees with me that they ran it way to lean and repeatedly over boosted it. At idle the afr was 17.5. At full throttle it mostly hovered around 15-16, still very lean, especially considering it was pushed 40 times! Anyway, the guy i spoke to said that turbo rotaries should be about 13 at idle. The scariest part was when it spiked it pinned to 17.5 on many occassions while full throttle was applied, so god knows it could have really been at like 30, no telling for sure. SO the guy i spoke too has a very reputable shop here in NC, and said he had never heard of the shop i used. They can rebuild my engine, they do this all the time on all previous gens of rx7's. He also agreed with me that if the vaccum line was melted when i brought it to them, it would have died on the first run, not the 40th, especially since its a renesis and not designed to take alot of boost w/o other fuel line upgrades etc. So, I believe I am in a much better position now getting many of my beliefs confirmed by a professional. If the shop that killed my car will not help out all, then the situation gets stickier than it alrdy is.
rx8-rus 10-31-2005, 07:54 PM Original does not exist anymore, but Google still keeps content it in its archives:

Horse 10-31-2005, 10:43 PM Farva, who did you talk to? If it's Rotorsports they are the guys to talk to, but they are a little expensive but the work is good. Hey if you want to put in a different motor than the Renesis here is a good one up for sale, $300 bucks less than the cost of a Renesis plus lots more horsepower: http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=476969
OfficerFarva 10-31-2005, 10:45 PM yes it was. they told me to get it there and they'll fix it up. Check out that link up above and read the 2nd post. It's a good explenation of the guy and his shop.
Moostafa29 10-31-2005, 11:00 PM Dude, I just saw this. I'm SO sorry to hear about this. Hope you get everything straightened out ASAP.
OfficerFarva 10-31-2005, 11:05 PM Thanks alot man...well I hope the JeepKahn post can also help every1 and point them all in directions furthest from that shop.
swoope 10-31-2005, 11:15 PM Thanks alot man...well I hope the JeepKahn post can also help every1 and point them all in directions furthest from that shop.
wish i could find what you are trying to get out!!!! as i said i hope they have some copies of the 40+ dynos. from what it sounds like the renniss engine is durable beyond all predictions.
you may have been the turbo stress bitch, i mean that in a good way.
i will donate.
beers
OfficerFarva 11-01-2005, 07:38 AM lol, thanks alot. did u check out that post on that link by rx8-rus?
OfficerFarva 11-01-2005, 03:34 PM Car is being taken to Rotorsports Racing today. Hopefully all will go well from here, and me and my baby can be back together soon!
swoope 11-01-2005, 04:17 PM lol, thanks alot. did u check out that post on that link by rx8-rus?

zoomzoom_8 11-01-2005, 07:12 PM keep us posted bro! good luck! I am starting a support group for long separations from your 8, you may want to join! I have been away from mine way tooooo long! haha! just kidding (about the support group!
OfficerFarva 11-01-2005, 07:57 PM Haha...sadly enough I would have joined. I need all the support i can get. I may actually see my car by the end of the month though. I think once the work starts it shoud move ok, but there are like 18 cars ahead of me at the shop...bummer.

You too, huh?
I just blew my engine, and it was overboosting for a while because the absolute idiots at ProStreet screwed up the install.
I also toasted my 1st rotor & have the R flash.
Coincidence? I think NOT !!!
OfficerFarva 11-01-2005, 08:19 PM lol. amazing what happens when idiots get paid to do shit to cars. I just can't believe how unprofessionaly the whole situation was handled. The best is when they claimed it wasn't there fault when they overboosted w/o using my gauge or boost controller, or how they aren't responsible for having a non employee lean the shit out of my car...sounds like they didn't do anything incorrectly!

I thought you had someone working on a new ems. Did they blow it up?
Sapphonica 11-01-2005, 09:43 PM I thought you had someone working on a new ems. Did they blow it up?
No, the engine blew a couple of days before I was scheduled to take it in to 'em.
Moostafa29 11-01-2005, 10:32 PM Sorry dude! I'm sure you'll have one strong engine once Rick is done with it. I'd be interested in the costs, and time as a precautionary thing.
OfficerFarva 11-02-2005, 09:17 AM I hope we both come back better and stronger than b4!! Sapphonica and I are gonna make 110% turn arounds :).
Brice-RX8 11-02-2005, 10:37 AM Good luck OfficerFarva
Sapphonica 11-02-2005, 10:41 AM I hope we both come back better and stronger than b4!! Sapphonica and I are gonna make 110% turn arounds :).
You know it, man!
OfficerFarva 11-02-2005, 03:21 PM I know my car will run better than ever since it is at rotor sports now. I need to find out if they think a rebuild or new engine would be better though.
