View Full Version : does your rx8 backfire?
9000rx8 07-10-2005, 09:16 PM I have a 2005 rx-8.. 700 miles now.. today i noticed that when my brother was revving the engine (at idle) around 3000 rpm, the car was backfiring.. it made that popping sound about 2-3 times everytime he revved it... a small cloud of black smoke can be seen near the exhaust tips... has anyone noticed this? is it a problem or what..? let me know please
TeamRX8 07-10-2005, 09:21 PM normal for a rotary engine
wedge357 07-10-2005, 09:42 PM mine never backfires. I got a 2005 Shinka built in 11/04 with 2250 miles to date. Even after I installed all my mods (check my signature) it still runs beautifully (knock on wood).
dazygirl415 07-10-2005, 10:01 PM My 8 backfires all the time and I love it!!
ZoomZoomH 07-10-2005, 10:03 PM brap brap brap
god i love the rotary farting sound lol
9000rx8 07-11-2005, 01:04 AM hm.. thanks guys.. i just wasnt sure of it..... heres a pic of my car (see attachment)

is that "8" as in RX-8 or a graphic representation of your cheeks :D :p
MyRxBad 07-14-2005, 11:01 AM is it sorta a soft popping sound out of the exhaust or a true backfire/afterfire that's a loud bang? Make a big difference. The Rx-8 should backfire in stock form.
XDEEDUBBX 07-14-2005, 11:04 AM just excess fuel being ignited...
Glyphon 07-14-2005, 11:09 AM not saying mine hasn't, but i've never noticed mine backfire.
crimson-rain 07-14-2005, 11:33 AM Borla catback and it back fires more than often.
wedge357 07-14-2005, 11:39 AM mine does the "burble" sound when it revs down from a high idle throttle but not an actual backfiring you'll hear from a badly tuned piston engine. If that's what you mean then it is normal. that's actually a trademark sound of the rotary kinda like the definitive sound of a Harley bike.
KYLiquid 07-14-2005, 11:40 AM mine backfires all the time, i love it....of course with a completly stock car it isnt that loud, but if you have the windows down you can hear it poping.
careful about the reving though, i heard from a little birdie that if you rev the motor while sitting still your whole car could explode and launch your lifeless corpse into orbit....lol j/k

i will try that today after work..lol
9000rx8 07-14-2005, 11:45 AM yea its a burble sound... k good, as long as its normal im fine.. i didnt want something to be wrong with a brand new car i paid 34 grand for lol
9000rx8 07-14-2005, 11:46 AM oh btw... u can see some pix of my car under CALLING ALL WHITES in the pictures forum.... look on the last page...9000rx8 :)
ZoomZoomH 07-14-2005, 11:46 AM brap brap brap pop
L8APEX 07-14-2005, 12:06 PM mine was barely audible before the custom exhaust, now it is very noticable, i really kinda like it. it gets the attention of those around the car too. I hae not seen anyone duck yet, but one day it will happen. :D
dwill9578 07-14-2005, 12:51 PM yup mine does as well, wish it did it more and louder
ZGlide 07-14-2005, 01:13 PM I've been trying to add the touch of flames coming out of the exhaust pipe along with the backfire. Cant do it! Driven hard up the mountain roads, and in pitch black, still no flames! Dang it...

no sh!+
as far as getting the flames, the only one that I have seen do it in person, was running no cat. It used to shoot flames, but he has the cat back on now that he has gone turbo.
AKBen 07-14-2005, 01:54 PM I've got 2 foot flames and loud pops coming out of each pipe when I'm hard on it. Even in broad daylight. A couple days ago I romped it hard with a cop behind me and my wife was 2 cars back and said I had some nice looking flamage.
ZGlide 07-14-2005, 05:42 PM hehehe.....flamage......haha
PaulieWalnuts 07-14-2005, 07:36 PM Only when I take it through White Castles drive-thru
devious12 07-14-2005, 07:39 PM Only when I take it through White Castles drive-thru
Is that you after White Castle (Avatar) :p
PaulieWalnuts 07-14-2005, 07:40 PM Avatar is after drinking all day and night and then White Castles
apotocki 07-15-2005, 11:01 AM MagnaFlow cat-back guarantee's the pop-pop between 4-5k every time.
Flames? hmmm.....not sure as I can't see behind me!
L8APEX 07-15-2005, 11:11 AM MagnaFlow cat-back guarantee's the pop-pop between 4-5k every time.
that is the backbone of my custom exhaust. i lov eit, it sounds better than all of the others i have heard.
mmats69 07-16-2005, 08:10 AM I have the Magnaflow Exhaust and it will pop when coming down after a high rev. Got it up to around 7k this mornin on the way home from work and it was quite noticeable when i shifted. Granted I had the windows down but you would have heard it even with them up. I thought myself it was out of the ordinary but after I got smoked by a CTS V8 and heard that exhaust pop, I knew it was normal.
slllygrl10 07-16-2005, 08:21 AM my 8 does it all the time I kinda likkkee it!!!
devious12 07-16-2005, 12:16 PM I have a stock catback and a midpipe on my 8. While shifting gears, if I stomp the gas real hard while shifting at around 8k I'll get a boom instead of just a pop, it's pretty damn loud, sounds like a gun shot, I love it.
thuneon 07-18-2005, 04:34 AM I love it when backfirering, too ! Its great ! Cant wait how it fires on with RP supercat midpipe i ordered last week. Hope i'll receive it end of this week.
Here is a vid if my backfirering 8 :-D (ftp://www.file-sharing.de/rx8/auspuff_videos/ctd2.mov)
TheWillofDeath 08-28-2008, 09:51 PM Can a stock 2004 RX8 backfire?
:x I cant ever tell, i hear the burble sound when driving it hard but Ive never had anyone able to tell me whether or not I get "flammage" ;]
Id love to show off like a idiot if it can do that.
imput1234 08-28-2008, 09:59 PM HKS Hi Power = backfire every time your foot is off the throttle, or as you decrease throttle. lol
climacus 08-30-2008, 08:13 PM Can a stock 2004 RX8 backfire?
All rotary engines pop when you roll off the throttle, you just can't hear it with the OEM exhaust setup. To get a stock RX-8 to really backfire, you need to romp on it hard for a while first. Very rough on the cat.
Easy_E1 08-30-2008, 08:34 PM Yep mine pops and flames. It's wonderful!
Mazurfer 08-30-2008, 08:51 PM Holy old thread resurrection batman! :Eyecrazy:
ShinkaTeen 08-30-2008, 08:52 PM HKS exhaust. DUHHH..
and i love it.
User24 08-30-2008, 11:42 PM Unfortunately yes. It probably makes people think my rx8 is broken.
For some reason, if I keep backfiring for a minute, vehicles start to back off behind me. I'm not sure if it is bad premix smell or whatever that causes them to start keeping their distance. Guess I'll never know but it is useful to shake those people off your tail sometimes.

if you have a midpipe is is likely they are seeing fire. that tends to make people back off.
beers
ducttape4054 09-03-2008, 07:18 PM hell i runnen wit a midpipe n AP cat system. i backfire alot. loud n flamen
krijpipudht 11-23-2008, 07:39 PM Old thread resurrection again.
What cause the pop?
Any why rotary with cat shoot no frame? (I thought flame can get pass maze in cat-back, why can't it go through cat?...)
just excess fuel being ignited...
Can you elaborate more?
Just wonder, thanks. :spank:

If too much gas goes into the engine, not all of it can burn because the oxygen is used up. So some gas is left over and gets into the exhaust.
If it is hot enough it will combust as soon as it reaches some oxygen, like near the tailpipe. The sudden combustion causes the pop.
A catalytic converter can break down the excess hydrocarbon before it gets to the tailpipe. This only works up to a point. Early RX-8 with overly-rich fuel maps still managed to backfire, even with catalytic converter.
chickenwafer 11-23-2008, 11:09 PM I can time mine right it literally sounds like shotgun or a small bomb accompanies by a pretty large fireball.
Blow off valves that vent tend to cause that.
04RX8man 11-24-2008, 12:33 PM yeah it's more of a puff of air not a BAM like a real backfire shooting flames etc(which can be done btw)
RedLine9x 11-25-2008, 10:48 PM funny, my car has 80k miles on it and the only thing that happens when revving is the slight smell of overused gas
szym0n 11-26-2008, 03:53 PM mine did b4 i had a stock but you couldn't hear it as good with a cat-back, its sexy=D
Mark_Lyons_231 02-09-2009, 03:29 PM sorry to ressurect this post, but i cant stop myself........
i've got a custom made stainless exhaust system and an AEM induction kit, and mine backfires and pops and bangs and flames, its just shit hot, go down an unlit road at nite and give it the beans and when i shift up, it lights the entire street up, as well as waking them with the bang too haha
dozer 02-09-2009, 03:31 PM ^nice! yeah mine backfires and pops really loud, i put in a turboxs midpipe but left the stock exhaust on :)
AAChaoshand 02-09-2009, 06:35 PM Alot of things that arnt normal for piston engines are normal for this car. I was freaking out when I first bought mine a year ago.
Renesis 8 07-03-2009, 05:51 PM Ive got an agency power midpipe with hks hi-power exhaust. I get the loudests backfires ive ever heard. This set up might be a little to loud.
spoddyandthemazda 07-06-2009, 04:59 PM I was actually out in my 8 today heading to a meeting at work and
was sitting at the lights trying to demonstrate to my mate the popping
and crackle sound (sounds like a rice crispies advert, snap, crackle and pop!)
I was revving gently, and could get the pop noise and he could hear it with my window
down, but when my CAT went over a year ago the pop wasn't there. I do this now and again to ensure the noise is still there, I have a motoria cat back exhaust and it sounds great.
So yes get a stainless cat back exhaust and you'll enjoy it even more, I have noticed that when I hammer the gas in 2nd and get above 4000rpm the engine feels like it bogs down until it gets to about 7000rpm and then springs back into life.
This started happening a few days after I got new coils, plugs and leads. All leads are tightly on, have ran the car on 95 octane mostly, now on 2nd tank of BP 97 octane. I have cleaned the MAF which improved things, but I am at a loss as to why the power goes down when climbing the revs until 7000rpm and its back to normal?
I have a CAT with only 10000 miles on it and it doesn't glow red, I have a K&N air box replacement filter, have reset the ecu etc.
I was worried about the CAT being clogged but no error codes coming up on scan gauge II.
The exhaust popped, crackled great after new coils and plugs etc, not just as good what could it be?
Cheers
