At the request of a forum member, I am posting pictures of the RX8 etched glass created by a outside contractor for Jay Marks Mazda in Houston.

The etchings are a simple wavy line along the bottom of the door glass front and back, both driver and passenger side. Within the wavy line on the rear door is RX8. Nothing fancy, but different, sometimes its the little things that stand out.

I actually saw this car when I was shopping for my 8 way back in Sept. The car may still be there because of how much they are charging for that glass etching! If I remember correctly, I think they added on around $800+ for it (and they didn't seem too keen on negotiating). It cost way too much for what you get. It looks nice....but not that nice!

Looks nice, I haven't really noticed this, I'm checking it out tomorrow and maybe ask around for prices in the Miami area.

glass etching is easy to do too...... all it is, is a layer of acid resistant wax layed down around the area that is to be etched. this is much like taping off an area before painting it. next, scratch off the wax into the shapes or patterns you want to have on your car. then take a low concentration of sulphuric acid (ok so that may be hard for most people to come by) and apply it to the waxed off area. let it sit for several minutes, then wash it clean (nevermind how you are supposed to dispose of that acid....) scrape the wax off and you now have an etched window.

ok so most people cant get the materials necessary to do it, but i can. and im not even a glass etcher.

That is a nice touch. Not $800 nice, but $75 nice.

I bought my 8 with it already applied back in January or '04. I'll go check the sticker and let you guys know what they charged me for it. That way you can get an idea what it should cost you should you want something like this done. I was actually thinking of a rotor with RX8 in its center etched into the very center of the suicide door windows. Too late for mine, but a good idea for someone who wants to try.


Edit: After looking over my paperwork, I remembered I wasnt charged for the etched glass. It was thrown in as part of the deal I was working out with them. In the end, I ended up with free exhaust finishers, tint and the etched glass.

I etched some glass around my house (front windows and a coffee table). It was very easy, though takes some REAL patience to mask off areas thoroughly.

This would be easy to do if the glass can be removed. I'd like to do either my windows or possibly a little RedSheDevil on the side mirror. I'm looking into the process and will let you know how it comes out and possibly set up a DIY for those who are interested. BTW, etching cream is relatively easy to come by at hobby-type stores like Michaels. They keep it locked up because it is an acid, so you have to ask for it.

My wife didn't want to go overboard with modding the car, but she did agree to letting me acid-etch her side windows. I'll post some pictures of the results here later.

Here are the pics of the etching that I did. I used some stuff call Armour Etch. Got it at AC Moores. It comes int a 12oz bottle, which is more than enough. I'm actually looking for other projects to etch as well.

The pattern we found on the internet. It's an outline of the Anastazi's (sp?) god Kokopelli, the god of fertility. He calls in the spring each year with his flute. Kind of a party god.:p

Had to take the windows off to do this. Masked them off with masking tape, traced the image onto the tape, and cut away with an exacto knife. Be careful though, it was pretty easy to scratch into the glass.

Dab the etching cream onto the exposed glass, wait 5 minutes, rinse, and remove the tape. It's that easy!
